A DETAILED LESSON PLAN IN GRADE 7 MATHEMATICS

I.

II.

OBJECTIVES
At the end of one-hour Math lesson, the Grade 7 students must be able to:
a. add monomials
b. state the rules in subtracting monomials with 75% mastery level
c. listen attentively in class discussion
SUBJECT MATTER
Topic: Subtraction of Monomials
Reference: Grade 7 Integrated Mathematics, pages 107 - 108
Materials: visual aids
Value Focus: Cooperation

III.

PROCEDURE

Teachers Activity

A. ACTIVITY
1. Preliminary Activities
a.
Prayer
Let us all stand for a prayer.
b.
Greetings
Good morning class.
c.
Checking of attendance

Students Activity

Good morning maam.

2. Review
But before we proceed to our new lesson, let us first
review the rules in adding monomials having similar terms.
1. The sum of two positive monomials having similar
terms is a positive monomial.
Examples:
(+3y) + (+2y) = +5y
(+11ab) + (+4ab) = +15ab
2. The sum of two negative monomials having similar
terms is a negative monomial.
Examples:
(-6mn) + (-2mn) = -8mn
(-8b2) + (-3b2) = -11b2
3. The sum of positive and negative monomials is the
difference between their absolute values, and the
sign of the sum follows the sign of the monomials with
the greater absolute value.
Examples:
(-3) + (+9) = +6
(-12) + (+3) = -9

Is there any questions students?

Now you have learned on how to add signed numbers

having the same signs and having different signs. Lets
have a game.

Are you ready students?

No, maam.

3. Motivation
Given the scrambled words, arranged them to find the
answer.

Yes, maam.
(The class are divided into 2 groups)

ARRANGED ME!

itnodadi fo ilamonmos
hint:
1st word a kind of operation in mathematics
3rd word - a kind of polynomial with only one term
From the game we have, do you have an idea about our
topic for today?
Very good!
4. Statement of the Aim
This morning, our topic is all about Addition of
Monomials. At the end of one-hour Math lesson, you

Yes, maam. It is all about Addition of

Monomials

must be able to (a)add monomials (b)enumerate the

rules in adding monomials with 75% mastery level
Lets start our discussion.
B. ANALYSIS
1. Discussion
From the review that we have, enumerate altogether
again the rules in adding numbers.

Very good!
And now lets apply what youve learned in adding
signed numbers to our lesson.

(students enumerate the rules in adding

numbers)

First, Lets have to add similar terms,

1. +14x
++5x
+
6x

(A student will go in front and show the

solution on the board)
1.
Very good!

2.

14x
+ +5x
+
6x
+
25x

5xy
+-3xy
2xy

Adding +14x + +5x++6x, the answer is 25x.

(Another student answer the no. 2.)

2.

5xy

+-3xy
2xy
10xy

Very good!

3.

35y
+-3y
+
32y

Very good!

Now you already knew how to add similar terms. On the

other hand if we have terms that are not similar, the
monomials cannot be added.
For example,
1.

2.

Adding -5xy + -3xy +-2xy, the answer is

10xy.

3.

35y
+-3y
+
32y
6y

2x
+
3y
2x-3y

3a2b
+
+
5ab2
3a2b +5ab2

C. ABSTRACTION
Again, what is the sum of two positive monomials having
similar terms?

How about the sum of two negative monomials?

Lastly, what is the sum of positive and negative

monomials?

The sum of two positive monomials having

similar terms is a positive monomial.

The sum of two negative monomials having

similar terms is a negative monomial.
Is there any questions?
D. APPLICATION
Lets have anactivity.Find your partner. I have here the
given monomials, add them and observe the rule of signs. I
will give 5 minutes to answer.

Are you ready?

The sum of positive and negative

monomials is the difference between
their absolute values, and the signof the
sum follows the sign of the monomials
with the greater absolute value.

No, maam.

1.
2.
3.

8y2 + +5y2 + +2y2

19xy + -2xy
+
5y + -10y + +15y
-

(After 5 minutes, students volunteer to present their

work to the board.)
Yes, maam.
And now, you have learned on how to add monomials, lets
have an exam.

IV.

Evaluation
I.

In a 1/2 sheet of paper, find the sum of the following

monomials.
1. -4y + -11y + -2y
2. +9mn + -16mn + +11mn
3. +13a + +15a

II.

V.

For 5 points. Enumerate only one rule in adding

monomials.

Assignment
Find the sum.
1. (-27bc + +2a) + (+25bc + +3a)
2. (-3c + -4b) + (-6c + -b)
