SWOT Analysis
Strengths
S1- The main strength of my film is the uses and gratifications the
audience receives after watching my short film. The audience gains
a sense of personal identity from watching my short film, as they
may be able to relate and connect with the character of Tanya. This
connection, which the audience may have with my main
protagonist, will allow my short film to be successful and creates
sympathy, which was one of the emotions that we wanted the
audience to feel.
S2- We provide our target audience with an understanding as we
give them a closer look into the life of someone who has lost
someone. This may give the audience a comprehension of what they
could do if they were ever to be in a similar situation to our
protagonist.
S3- Drama is a very popular and mainstream genre as a mass
audience views it. This is an advantage as it may encourage more
viewers to be interested in my short film.
S4- Our previous experience from AS Media Studies is strength for
us as we all have knowledge on the codes and conventions that are
included in drama films as well as having the technical competence
to achieve these stereotypes and allow the audience to identify with
the different representations of our characters.
S5- Our group members have a strong relationship, which makes it
easier for us to communicate our ideas and execute them to a high
quality, as we are all aware of each others strengths and
weaknesses. This also enabled us to work more efficiently as we
were able to allocate roles suiting to each individuals ability,
ensuring that the work produced is of a high standard.
S6- Our actors were confident and had a high level of acting skills,
which made it easier for us as a group to communicate our ideas
and for them to then convey them. Our main protagonist was an A
Level Drama student and was looking to pursue a career in acting,
which was a huge advantage as she had the right skills and was
very enthusiastic towards our production. This again, made it easier
for us to work with her.
S7- The locations that we used were easily accessible and local for
our actors and members of our group, which made it convenient for
everyone to get to the locations on time. This allowed us to work
efficiently and finish each filming session without having to stop due
to the changes in the lighting outside.

Weaknesses
W1- We had issues with transport for one of the filming days due to
the rail replacement works, this made everyone late which meant
we had to work at a faster pace yet still ensure that the quality
produced was of a high standard which, was a challenge.
W2- We have to take into consideration the effect the themes which
we are focusing on such as cancer and death may have on our
audiences as they are sensitive topics.
W3- As two out of three of our actors are still in education and have
a job, this may make it difficult for us to organize filming days which
everyone can attend. This is something, which we will have to
discuss in our group chat to ensure that everyone is available.
W4- We have to be aware of the changes in the weather and lighting
due to the changes in the season. This is particularly crucial for our
short film as three out of five of the locations we have used are
outside. This means we have to start filming earlier so that we can
finish earlier as the darkness and coldness may make it difficult for
us to work.
Opportunities
O1- The media department at school has provided us with a range
of high quality equipment, which we are able to use which makes
the process of filming easier and cheaper, which is a huge benefit.
This would not be the case if we were an independent production
company outside of school as we would have to figure out a way to
raise money in order to purchase/book out equipment such as a
camera or a voice recording booth, which the school provides us
with for free.
O2- We are also given access to Final Cut Pro X, which is the
software we will be using to edit. This makes the editing process
cheaper, as we wont have to purchase softwares to edit. In
addition to this, the fact that we have access to this in school makes
it more convenient for us to work as we can use the Apple iMacs to
edit during our own free time outside of school hours.
O3- We have the support of the teachers and the media technician
with experience and knowledge, which means they are able to

provide us with constructive criticism and feedback to
improve our work.
Threats
T1- As there is only a limited amount of equipment available, it may
not always be available when we need it. Therefore we have to
ensure that as a group we are organized and fill out call sheets to
book the equipment in advance. Also, we could avoid this problem
by borrowing equipment from someone outside of school, in which
case we wont have to worry about limited equipment.
T2- As our actors and members of our group are students and have
other commitments outside of school we have to prioritise and work
in a organised manner in order to ensure that all deadlines are being
met.
