SURPASS hiS 700

Traffic Data Management

General
Traffic data management in signaling systems no. 7
(SS7) networks plays an important role in ensuring effective operation of the signaling points, in the planning
and expansion of signaling networks and in network
traffic management.
SURPASS hiS 700 supports traffic data management
with:
Traffic measurement
SS7 traffic monitoring (First and interval measurement)
SS7 traffic structure measurement
For detailed information about the traffic data see the
description called Traffic Data Management.

Traffic measurement
Traffic measurements record the significant data of a
signaling network such as signaling load or non-availability of links, routs and so on.

SS7 traffic structure measurement

With main processor (MP) load measurement, the operator receives an overview of the load situation of selected MPs during the measurement period. The
measurement registers the maximum load and the average load for the individual virtual central processing
units (VCPUs) and message handlers (MH).

Number portability ticket measurement

The NP (number portability) ticket measurement supplies statistical data about the usage of the NP server.
The NP server accesses are recorded in binary data
tickets on the MP hard disk. The measurement uses a
random sample method whereby a data record is only
registered for every n-th time the NP server is accessed.
SS7 measurement
The Signaling System No. 7 (SS7) traffic measurement
is implemented for message transfer part (MTP), signaling connection control part (SCCP) and enhanced
SCCP screening.
The ATM (asynchronous transfer mode) cell measurement records the load on high speed signaling links
(HSLs).
In addition to the measurements fulfilling ITU and ANSI
requirements, measurements according IP domain are
implemented. The measurements of IP traffic uses the
current implementation of MTP measurements. So the
user gets a consistent view of the traffic in all parts of
the SS7 network.

SS7 traffic monitoring

(First and interval measurement)
The first and interval measurements monitor SCCP,
MTP and SCCP screening events. The monitored
events are for example the overload of signaling links,
discarded MSUs per network, routing errors and
screening failures.
A quality of service (QoS) alarm report is generated by
traffic monitoring whenever the value of one of the
monitored parameters exceeds the predefined threshold. The NetManager/Switch Commander application
Performance Data Collector transfers the QoS alarms
to the data post-processing system in real time. The
SCCP screening failures are monitored by SCCP
screening monitoring.
The monitoring procedure generates both an alarm report for the first occurrence of the event and an interval
report which contains all the events which occurred
during the concerning measurement time period. Both
reports are output in the log files on the hard disk of the
Main processor.

SS7 traffic structure measurement records the MSUs

transferred in the signaling links. The measurement is
a random sampling measurement method that registers only every n-th MSU (n = trace factor) in a data
record. Traffic structure measurement writes data in
daily files on MP disk.
The quality and performance of the signaling network
can be assessed with an SS7 traffic structure measurement. The statistically determined data can be post processed as required to allow the operator to obtain
information on the traffic flows in the SS7 networks and
to enable him to draw conclusions regarding the incoming SS7 traffic and the transit or terminating traffic. The
collected data can also be used for compiling statistics
for billing purposes.

Administration of traffic data

management
All features of traffic data management are controlled
via tasks from the NetManager/Switch Commander.
The SS7 measurements and the SS7 monitoring are either administrated with individual Q3 tasks or by the
help of the NetManager application SS7 Management. Also the number portability ticket measurement
can be alternatively administrated by the NetManager
application Number Portability.
The SURPASS hiS 700 traffic measurement and monitoring data and the MP load data are written in log files
to the hard disk of the Main processor (MP). The data
are transferred from the MP disk to the disk of the NetManager/Switch Commander with the Performance
Data Collector application. "Performance Data Collector" application serves as a central platform for performance data and offers it in ASCII formatted
transmission files (post-processing files) to post-processing tools.

Postprocessing of traffic data

Measurement data can be evaluated on a computeraided basis with postprocessing programs. Siemens offers the performance management application SPOTS
for postprocessing traffic data. SPOTS provides a series of reports which offer effective possibilities for operation and planning. SPOTS can be installed on an
optional NetManager/Switch Commander Server and
can use the full NetManager/Switch Commander basic
structure. This provides a convenient and particularly
effective variant for postprocessing measurement and
monitoring data.

Traffic structure measurement and number portability

ticket measurement write data in special files on MP
disk. Both files can be transferred to any postprocessing computer with file transfer protocol over transmission control protocol/Internet protocol (FTP over
TCP/IP).
