Assignment Introduction

Assignment Introduction
This assignment is planned to assess the following tasks of Building Measurements

Different uses of measurement and apply the technique to differing situations on a construction
project

relationship between measurement and the different parties involved in the design, production and
maintenance of a construction project

analyse the different forms of bills of quantities and contract documents

determine the correct form of contract documentation for a given particular purpose or situation

Taking off quantities for structural concrete items in superstructure and substructure

Taking off quantities for steel structures

Taking off quantities for building services

Abstracting of quantities and Produce BOQs

Preparation of Specifications, Preambles and Preliminary items

All measurement work should be based on the NRM2. Each task should be on a fresh sheet of paper using
one side only. Waste calculation is to be prepared in the appropriate place on the dimension sheet. Careful
attention to be paid on method of reaching dimensions, waste calculations, accurate dimensions, entering
the dimensions, clear and accurate work description with standard abbreviations, abstracting and billing
techniques and cleanliness are essential in your work. If any dimension scaled from the drawing it should
be indicated.
Reasonable assumptions can be made where necessary and inserted them in the query sheet before starting
the measurement work.
Assignment Scenario
The quantity surveyors play a vital role in taking off quantities or measuring work items during the design,
construction and production phases of a project. Furthermore, measurement activities will take place
during initial and/or approximate estimating techniques, production of contract documentation,
measurement of variations, sub-contract and supply chain packages, final account procedures, maintenance
and refurbishment works. Assume that you are working as a quantity surveyor to a contracting company.
The architect has issued a variation order to remove the original internal door and fill the void with a brick
wall including the finishes to match surrounding walls.
Door :

900x2500 mm paneled door with 75x100 head and jambs fix to 225 brick wall.
Finishes to walls; semi roughed plaster with 1:1:5 cement lime motor and two coats of emulsion

painting
Finishes to floor; 600x600 ceramic tiles with 100 high ceramic skirting

:
Task 1
1.1.

Explain the responsibilities or the involvements of different parties in relation to the

measurement work in the design, production and maintenance of a construction project (P1.1)

1.2.

Prepare the measurement sheets for the above variation order (1.2)

1.3.

Select an ongoing small scale construction site, and take site measurements for three major
work items (P1.2) your submission should include the evidence such as photographs, drawings,
measurement sheets and a letter issued by a responsible site officer which certify that the student
visit the site and taken off site measurement by him/herself.

Task 2
2.1 . Calculate the approximate quantities for following elements for the given floor plan, specification
and NRM 1 (P2.1)
Foundation
Lowest floor construction
Concrete frame in superstructure
Specification

Foundation: Strip foundation width 750mm, depth 900mm from existing ground level, concrete
strip consisting with 4 number of 16mm high yield steel reinforcement bars and concrete with
grade 25, excavation included with earth work support, disposal of excavated material, filling to

foundation.
Lowest floor construction: 100mm thick Grade 25 mass concrete including 300mm hardcore

filling and damp proof membrane with100g polythene

Concrete frame construction: 225x225 reinforced concrete columns with grade 25 concrete
reinforced with 4 number 12mm bars and 20 number 6mm links. Beams with
same type of concrete with 4 number of 12 mm bar reinforcement and 40
number of 6mm links

Floor plan
Task 3: The attached drawing for sludge distribution chamber has sent to you for the
preparation of boq.
(TASK 3.1 & 3.2 will be completed as classroom activities. The students are
allowed to use NRM2 and given drawings during the classroom activity. The
reinforcement

is not

included

in to

the

CRA the

student

may

complete

measurement for reinforcemant and insert them in to the boq by taking their own
time).
3.1

Take off quantities for reinforcement form work and in-situ concrete for all the

RCC items of sludge distribution chamber (P2.2)

3.2
Prepare bill pages for above measured work items ( P4.2)
All bill pages must be word processed including the bills prepared in task 3.2. However
handwritten bill pages prepared in 3.2 must be attached to your submission
Specifications as given in the drawings, reasonable assumptions shall be made if
necessary and indicate them clearly on a query sheet.
3.3. Write five preamble clauses for two selected work sections of task3(P3.1)
You may use a stranded published source of specification with relevant modification
and appropriate reference
Task 4: $.1 and 4.2 are classroom activities
4.1. Measure all the work items in-conjunction with structural steel frame as per fig 3
Necessary assumptions should indicate on a query sheet (P2.2)
4.2.
4.3.

Prepare bill pages for the items measured in 4.1 (P4.2)

Write five preamble clauses for two selected work sections of task3(P3.1)

Task 5 (5.1and 5.2 are class room activities)

5.1. Measure the elecrical services of connected to DB 1 and DB 2 only of the attache
drawings (P2.2)
5.2.
5.3.

Prepare bill pages for above measured work items ( P4.2)

Write five preamble clauses for two selected work sections of task3(P3.1)
