General
1.1
Introduction
This specification describes the painting procedure for structural steel based on
Mitsubishi-Hitachi Metals Machinery Inc.s experience , herein after called as MH, for
the purpose of Terniums fabrication work, and called as Owner. If any painting
practice deviating from this specification is customarily used, or there is any point to
be improved upon, the method which will produce the best results should be agreed
upon by all parties concerned.
Futheremore, fabricator shall refer general paint specification numbered as
11117198 -2002001-RS001.
1.2
Scope
This specification shall apply to the painting work of structural steel.
1.3
1.4
Painting plan
The fabricator shall prepare a painting plan and obtain Owners approval thereof
before he starts the painting work.

(2)
For structural steel to be finish coated at the shop, the fabricator shall certify that the
brands of paints to be used are equivalent to or better in quality than those specified
in Annex 2, and obtain Owners approval thereof.
(3)
When the finish coating is applied to structural steel at the site, the brands of primer,
intermediate and finish paints shall be those specified in Annex 2 to facilitate
overcoating at the site.
inform Owner of the overcoating characteristics of the brand and obtain Owners
approval thereon prior to the work.
4.
Painting
4.1
Unpainted portions
Unless otherwise specified, the following portions shall not be painted at the shop.
All vinyl or other tapes used at painting for masking shall be removed after painting.
(1) Bottom surfaces of base plates
(2) Surfaces of the bed for bearing support
(3) Parts to be embedded in concrete
(4) Faying surface of high strength bolt joints
(Areas within splice plates and their periphery of 50 mm)
(5) Parts to be field welded
(Areas within a width of 50 mm on either side of each welding groove)
(6) Stainless steel and chromium plated parts
(7) Inside surface of parts to be tightly closed
(8) Smooth machine finished surfaces for bearing joints
4.2
4.3
Confirmation of paint
Confirm that the required quantity of paint of the brand, specifications and quality
specified in Annex 2 has been prepared.
stored for more than one (1) year after production or has no JIS certificate shall not
be used.
4.4
Fully mix the paint and use it when the whole amount is homogeneous.
If two component type paints are used, strictly observe the mixing ratio specified by
the paint manufacturer and use the mixed paint within the specified time after mixing.
If the atmospheric temperature or the surface to be painted does not allow proper
workability of paint, the paint may be thinned with only a thinner of the same brand
as that of the paint.
Painting work
Paint shall be applied by either brush, roller or spray, depending on the type of paint,
the environment at the shop and the shape of the structural steel to be painted.
The coating shall be uniform and have no brush marks, unevenness, bare spots or
runs and sags.
When spray coating is done, carry out test painting to determine painting conditions.
The spray gun shall be kept away from the surface to be painted at a constant
distance and moved at a constant speed, and overlapping shall have a uniform layer
at the edges of the spray pattern.
4.6
Limitations
No painting shall be carried out under any of the following environmental and
meteorological conditions:
o
(1) The atmospheric temperature at the painting place is 5 C or lower or the humidity
is 85% or higher.
(2) Indoor ventilation is not sufficient to properly dry the paint.
(3) During painting or before drying of the coated film, snowfall, strong wind or dewing
can cause water drops, floating dust or sand dust to stick to the coated film.
(4) Steel surfaces under the blazing sun have a high temperature and bubbles can
occur in the coated film.
(5) Any other environmental condition not suitable for painting.
