1.

General
1.1

Introduction
This specification describes the painting procedure for structural steel based on
Mitsubishi-Hitachi Metals Machinery Inc.s experience , herein after called as MH, for
the purpose of Terniums fabrication work, and called as Owner. If any painting
practice deviating from this specification is customarily used, or there is any point to
be improved upon, the method which will produce the best results should be agreed
upon by all parties concerned.
Futheremore, fabricator shall refer general paint specification numbered as
11117198 -2002001-RS001.

1.2

Scope
This specification shall apply to the painting work of structural steel.

1.3

Applicable laws and regulations

(1) Japanese Industrial Standard (JIS)
(2) ISO 8501-1 (1988)
(3) SIS 05 59 00 (1976)
(4) SSPC Steel Structures Painting Manual (1989)
(5) Local laws and regulations for :
(a) Labor safety and sanitation
(b) Crane safety
(6) International laws, regulations and standards for painting

1.4

Painting plan
The fabricator shall prepare a painting plan and obtain Owners approval thereof
before he starts the painting work.

In preparing the painting plan, the fabricator

shall take into account the geographical, environmental and meteorological

conditions of the painting shop, painting intervals, difficulty of painting work,
corrosive environment after painting, etc.

2.

Surface preparation
2.1

Degrees and methods

The durability of paint coating depends on the surface preparation.

Therefore,

carefully prepare the surface to be painted according to Annex 1: Surface

Preparation Standard.
2.2

High strength bolts, common bolts and welds

(1) High strength bolts, common bolts and joints made by these bolts and welds,
portions of which are subject to corrosion, shall be carefully pretreated.
(2) If alkali content remains in welds made by using low hydrogen electrodes,
neutralize the surfaces and wash them with water.

3.

Painting specification
(1)

See Annex 2: Painting Specification.

(2)

For structural steel to be finish coated at the shop, the fabricator shall certify that the
brands of paints to be used are equivalent to or better in quality than those specified
in Annex 2, and obtain Owners approval thereof.

(3)

When the finish coating is applied to structural steel at the site, the brands of primer,
intermediate and finish paints shall be those specified in Annex 2 to facilitate
overcoating at the site.

If another brand is inevitably used, the fabricator shall

inform Owner of the overcoating characteristics of the brand and obtain Owners
approval thereon prior to the work.

11117198 - 2002090 - WP003

4.

Painting
4.1

Unpainted portions
Unless otherwise specified, the following portions shall not be painted at the shop.
All vinyl or other tapes used at painting for masking shall be removed after painting.
(1) Bottom surfaces of base plates
(2) Surfaces of the bed for bearing support
(3) Parts to be embedded in concrete
(4) Faying surface of high strength bolt joints
(Areas within splice plates and their periphery of 50 mm)
(5) Parts to be field welded
(Areas within a width of 50 mm on either side of each welding groove)
(6) Stainless steel and chromium plated parts
(7) Inside surface of parts to be tightly closed
(8) Smooth machine finished surfaces for bearing joints

4.2

Prime coating painted portion

Unless otherwise specified, the following portion shall be painted only prime coating
at the shop. All vinyl or other tapes used at painting for masking shall be removed
after finish coating painting.
*1)Fitting surface of machine equipments, including machine rails
Acid resistant touch-up finish painting shall be applied for the above mentioned
portion after installation of equipments at site.

4.3

Confirmation of paint
Confirm that the required quantity of paint of the brand, specifications and quality
specified in Annex 2 has been prepared.

As a rule, any paint which has been

stored for more than one (1) year after production or has no JIS certificate shall not
be used.

-4Q:_Spec11117198-2002090-WP003 Ternium Painting SS02-gene.doc

11117198 - 2002090 - WP003

4.4

Mixing and thinning

As a rule, open a paint can just before the paint is used and once a can is opened,
use all of its contents.

Leave as little paint remaining in an opened can as possible.

Fully mix the paint and use it when the whole amount is homogeneous.
If two component type paints are used, strictly observe the mixing ratio specified by
the paint manufacturer and use the mixed paint within the specified time after mixing.
If the atmospheric temperature or the surface to be painted does not allow proper
workability of paint, the paint may be thinned with only a thinner of the same brand
as that of the paint.

Do not thin the paint too much.

shorten the drying time or to save paint.

Do not use a thinner to

Never use light oil, benzine, gasoline or

any other low quality thinner.

4.5

Painting work
Paint shall be applied by either brush, roller or spray, depending on the type of paint,
the environment at the shop and the shape of the structural steel to be painted.
The coating shall be uniform and have no brush marks, unevenness, bare spots or
runs and sags.
When spray coating is done, carry out test painting to determine painting conditions.
The spray gun shall be kept away from the surface to be painted at a constant
distance and moved at a constant speed, and overlapping shall have a uniform layer
at the edges of the spray pattern.

4.6

Limitations
No painting shall be carried out under any of the following environmental and
meteorological conditions:
o

(1) The atmospheric temperature at the painting place is 5 C or lower or the humidity
is 85% or higher.
(2) Indoor ventilation is not sufficient to properly dry the paint.
(3) During painting or before drying of the coated film, snowfall, strong wind or dewing
can cause water drops, floating dust or sand dust to stick to the coated film.
(4) Steel surfaces under the blazing sun have a high temperature and bubbles can
occur in the coated film.
(5) Any other environmental condition not suitable for painting.

-5Q:_Spec11117198-2002090-WP003 Ternium Painting SS02-gene.doc

11117198 - 2002090 - WP003

4.7

Surface preparation and painting

(1) Steel members assembled by welding shall be pretreated promptly and, within four
(4) hours, coated with rust-preventive paint to prevent rusting.
(2) Until the coated film has become hardened, the painted surface shall be covered
properly against rain, chemicals, steam, heat, etc.

If any defect is found in the

coat, remove the defective area and repaint.

(3) If brush marks, runs and sags, sticking of brush hair, damage, etc. are found in
the coated surface, remove them and repaint.
(4) If the coated film is damaged or rust floats up on the painted surface, treat the
surface and coat it with the same paint as the original by means of the same
application method.
In case of damage, an area at least 5 to 10 times greater than the damaged area
shall be removed and repainted.
(5) The areas which cannot be painted after erection shall be painted with
intermediate and finish coats before erection.
(6) The corners of squares and the inside surfaces of holes and shapes shall be
painted with one or two extra coats to supplement a thin coat due to physical
shape.
If these surfaces are spray-painted, additionally brush them.
(7) If the film thickness is insufficient, additional coats shall be applied.
(8) Overcoating shall be done after the undercoat has thoroughly dried.
However, this does not apply to epoxy paints.
(9) When overcoats are applied, each coat should have a different color so that the
number of coats applied can be known visually.
(10) The coated surface shall be smooth and beautiful.

a surface preparation symbol defined by SSPC, U.S.A.

Remarks 1.

Classes 1, 2 and 3 are generally recommended. Special class 1 shall

not be used unless it is designated by the Owner or inorganic zink-rich
paint is applied.

2.

For more detailed information on the surface preparation methods in

the table, refer to ISO or SIS standards.
