stirredcontroversyoverthecountrysforeignrelationsbecauseofhistiradesanduseofexpletives.Withhiscabinet

components.
First,thegovernmenthastoneddownitsrhetoricvisvisChina,especiallywithrespecttotheoutcomeofthe

especiallyifhistrustratingssliptotakeaharderstance.Thusfar,itappearsthatthereislittlechanceofthis
happeninginthenearfuture,withDuterteexpressinghiscommitmenttoforgerobusttieswithBeijing.Nevertheless,
thegovernmentmustworkcloselywiththemediaduringsuchincidentsinordertomanagetheflowofinformation
thus,preventingasuddenoutburstofnationalistemotionsthatmayconstraintheconductofnegotiations.Thisisto
preventtacticalsituationsfromconflagratingintoamajorforeignpolicycrisis.Moreimportantly,Manilamustwork

Fornow,alleyesareonPresidentDutertesupcomingOctobervisittoChina.Whateveritsoutcomesmaybe,
Dutertesvisit,hisfirstpresidentialforeigntripoutsideSoutheastAsia,willberememberedashisadministrationsmajor
diplomaticattempttorepairrelationswithChina.TimewilltellifthistripwilltrulymarkthebeginningofastableSino
Philippinerelationship.
