Intro
Power in Control
The following pages feature a selection of case studies for a number of different applications that successfully run DEIF units and solutions.
DEIF has become a preferred control solution supplier to some of the biggest operators in the market, not just because of our innovative, safe
and reliable technology but because of our commitment in guiding you through all phases of your project, from specification to installation or
configuration. DEIFs flexible product platform covers the full range of application possibilities.
Most customers are able to install and commission our standard products working from data sheets only. But in cases of doubt, DEIFs farreaching network of sales and competence centres, distributors, customer care teams, and technical support teams is available to assist you
and ensure you invest in and implement the best controller for your application.
DEIF realises how space is always in demand. Saving you time and cost, our standard controllers require limited room for mounting and
installation in switchboard cabinets.
Basic installation information can be found in the product quick start guide, and application setup is made easy with DEIFs Utility Software.
For greater detail, we refer you to the product installation instructions, just as you are invited to attend training courses on how to install and
operate DEIFs standard controllers.

APR Energy
mode and from power control to frequency control to name just a few
We just pressed the start button and in less than a minute 40 gensets were online, he says. What this means, is that APR Energy is now able
to set up plants at a considerably faster rate than before.
Mr Campion believes that the plant in Peru represents his idea of how a plant should function and how to control it in real time.
Typical of the collaborative way DEIF works, the AGC Plant Management Control system is the result of DEIF and APR Energys joint efforts to
develop the optimum solution for this job.
Prior to commissioning the system, DEIFs engineers meticulously programmed and tested its control functionalities. Parts of these tests were
carried out on-site. Having completed the tests, the engineers made absolutely sure that the plant would be able to start up and deliver the
required 60 MW without any problems.
Edmund Campion praises the DEIF on-site support. Right from the beginning, DEIFs engineers listened and worked with us to develop the
flexible solutions we wanted. There is no doubt that DEIF has delivered on our expectations, Mr Campion says, giving DEIF 10 out of 10 for
the process. Cannot fault it.

Critical Power
Being a major transport hub, the requirement for a secure power supply
at the port is essential. The risk of potential power outages lead to
the decision to upgrade the existing embedded generation system
to provide full generator cover for all areas of the ferry terminal with
additional ability to export power on demand into the Local Distribution
Network, benefitting other users of the STOR (Stand by Operating Reserve) scheme.
DEIF assisted with the application requirements, supplying AGC-4 Advanced Generator Controllers for local and remote control of mains
connection, island operation, mains synchronisation and export control.
The distance between generators was another unusual challenge that DEIF was also able to honour thanks to the companys state of the art
R&D and test centres at its manufacturing facility in Denmark. Although the solution was a DEIF standard, for the Port of Dover it was a more
secure system, guaranteeing a safer supply for its power demands.
DEIFs AGC-4 features proven technology for a wide range of generation systems in critical power applications, including synchronisation to
the grid, mains power export, and load take over where load is transferred from the mains to the generator as well as serial communication
protocol via TCP/IP.
As opposed to more conventional master-slave configurations, DEIF uses its own Power Management Systems including a powerful M-Logic
configurator tool for logic relay customisation.

Rental
We have come to believe so firmly in DEIFs solutions that we now have approximately 500 gensets and transfer switches equipped with DEIF
modules, part of a process that will see us standardise our whole fleet with DEIF solutions, including DEIFs most recent technology, says A
Geradora Chief Engineer, Sergio Alvarez.
We know how vital it is that gensets can be moved from one site to the next, fast DEIF Product Manager Henrik Binderup explains, including
the ability to run them in different types of applications without losing time on the setup. If you want to save time as part of your efforts to
maximise the returns on your investment, DEIFs integrated Automatic Genset Controller, AGC-4, is the innovative choice.
Featuring all standard rental applications and enabled for customisation by making simple display selections, defining buttons and LEDs on
the AOP, the AGC-4 is the most comprehensive controller on the market today. With an easy-to-use interface for managing the plant during
operation, the controller not only reduces costs for commissioning, maintenance and operation for standard size projects; it also handles fully
automated large scale applications of up to 256 gensets in one application.
Naturally, the AGC-4 interfaces to all types of engine brands. Because it can be built on top of an engine controller and has an analogue load
sharing line interfacing other controllers, introducing AGC-4s gradually as part of a retrofit plan for your fleet is also possible.
Refitting an existing control system with a DEIF solution can make good financial sense and be a green advantage with significant and tangible
gains in the form of immediate improved engine performance and reduced emissions. The refitting has a short to medium term return on
investment time, and in the longer perspective improved engine performance and a reduced need for servicing means a longer operation life
for the generator.

Awarded 2010 Green Energy Farmer of the Year for his vision and
commitment to green farming, Temple has successfully invested in
one of the few Anaerobic Digestion systems (AD) in England: Cattle
manure and silage from the dairy farm and whey from the cheesemaking enterprise are fed into the facility, producing biogas that can be
used for heat and electricity production.
Gas
With surplus energy sold to the grid, the by-product digestate used as a free fertiliser replacement and the much-reduced cost of disposing
manure, silage and whey, going green has also turned out to make good business sense.
But crucially, because of operational problems, the original ADs Combined Heat and Power system (CHP) at Copys Green was unable to
achieve grid connection until June 2010. According to Stephen Temple, this was a major setback as the return from the sale of electricity and
the benefit of not having to buy in electricity is considerable. The installation cost for the system came to 750,000. Achieving stable operation
was paramount to reaching his eight-year target for return on investment.
Starting again, Temple spent a good amount of time looking at as many different systems as possible, finally deciding to go with Austrian IET
supplying a genset with DEIFs acclaimed gas control solution, Delomatic 400 Bio (DM 400 Bio). Temple chose DEIF because of the proven
nature of the companys technology and the fast delivery time.
In line with our standards, DEIF promised delivery in approximately eight weeks, faster than any other offers Dr Temple received. A delay of as
little as two weeks would have meant a loss of exported electricity income of 7,500, plus the additional cost of the imported power consumed.
Having studied the particulars, DEIF delivered the proposed scheme at the end of January 2011. Because DEIFs DM 400 Gas is so simple to
install, the entire CHP system was commissioned within a 24-hour period and operating satisfactorily almost immediately. Since then, there
have been no major issues and the operational availability of the system is very high. With an uptime of 99%, the system achieves 85%
of permissible electrical export capacity: generated electricity meets all on-site demands plus export to grid of 130 kWe. Feed-in tariff earns
approximately 500 per day.

The pipes channel filtered landfill gas for the generators at a nearby
25 MW gas power plant. Produced by the landfill waste and collected
in a number of gas wells distributed across the 80 hectare 500 ft.
landfill areas, the biogas is transported from the wells through the pipes
to the on-site gas treatment facility located on the top of the landfill
mountain. Here the foul-smelling gas is cooled and the vapour that
would otherwise clog the gas pipes and damage the machines later in
the treatment process is removed.
Since the plant began operation, it has cut millions of tonnes worth of methane emissions. The reductions have generated substantial profits
Gas
to the owner who sells CO2 quotas and invests the profits in new biogas and power plants. The Brazilian company has seemingly struck gold
with its biogas project.
Equipped with 16 1.54 MW gensets and Caterpillar G3520C engines supplied by Sotreq, Brazils biggest Caterpillar dealer, the plant features
a DEIF power control system of AGC Automatic Genset Controllers.
Sotreq chose the DEIF units for the project because of the DEIF solutions proven reliability, comprehensive levels of protection, simple
operation and its fuel-efficiency.
Sotreqs Engineer Manager, Mauricio Garcia, thinks this project is a frontrunner for more to come.
There are few biogas projects in Brazil, he says. But the positive experiences from the So Joo project make the future construction of
similar installations more likely. He also credits DEIF for part of the projects success. The AGCs have been vital in ensuring optimum generator
operation at all times and ultimately help us provide a more sustainable and reliable energy supply.

The gains are significant and tangible in the form of immediate improved
engine performance and reduced emissions. The refitting has a short to
medium term return on investment time, and in the longer perspective
improved engine performance and a reduced need for servicing means
a longer operation life for the generator.
With an output target set at 10.000 barrels of oil per day, production is dependent on the availability and stability of four Deutz type TBG 632
16 cylinder generator sets: three of the four engines must run 24/7 to generate the 7,000 to 8,000 kW needed for production.
After detailed pre-engineering work and emulation tests, DEIF supplied a complete DM4-Gas control system with multiple side components.
DEIF also replaced the cubicle design and supplied and handled adaptation of the existing switchboard including on-site dismantling, mounting
and wiring of the new system followed by comprehensive tests, commissioning and fine tuning.
Following the well-planned and flawlessly executed DEIF refit, the TBG 632 16 cylinder generators now use less gas to produce more power.
The previous black-out risk has been eliminated and Load Sharing between three engines has been tested up to 2900 kW with a slow power
deviation between engines at less than 200 kW and frequency fluctuating slowly around +/- 0.06 Hz.
The combination of two engines in Load Sharing and one engine in Fixed Power was tested up to 2800 kW as the fixed power setpoint, with
the Load Sharing engines sharing 1500 kW each. Again, the frequency remained at +/- 0.06 Hz.

The plant was inaugurated in 1921 and is part of Denmarks National Energy Museum, which made retrofitting the system an aesthetic
challenge: The previous control system had been visible but DEIFs new hardware had to be integrated and hidden in the original design
features of the plant.
DEIF solved the problem by hiding the majority of the control system behind the existing distribution panel. The remaining visible parts were
placed in a console designed to agree with the plants vintage look.

Tried and tested at locations in Africa, Asia, and South America over the past three years, AGC Plant Management solutions have been
developed not just with an eye for safety but for fuel saving and optimised maintenance intervals. The system introduces fan control, black
starts in both island and fixed power mode, and asymmetrical load sharing designs to cut running costs.
Lifting genset control from single units to plant level, easily enabling comprehensive control and protection for large setups from one central
point of intelligence, AGC Plant Management incorporates plant power and power factor control at connection points, load profile priorities
routines and much more.
Cost-optimised Design
The comprehensive AGC Plant Management solution uses the plants generators to black-start large step-up transformers directly. With a proven
ratio of up to 1:39 between the generator and the transformer, the solution cost-optimises black-start of plants in both island and fixed power
mode, limiting the need for high voltage breakers. With a dedicated plant communication structure, SCADA systems are kept separate from the
control system, limiting onsite installation to a minimum.
Grid Support
Designed to monitor and detect grid abnormalities automatically, the AGC Plant Management system can reduce the amount of power
produced to the grid in case the grid frequency rises. These functionalities are also useful for reducing the amount of kVAr passed on to the
next upstream transformer: as the upstream transformer current declines, the transformers load performance will improve.

Based on the idea of controlling larger numbers of smaller, decentralised fuel tanks rather than one large central fuel tank, the AFC Plant
Management solution concept makes moving and commissioning your genset fleet as well as your fleet of fuel tanks more flexible and
dynamic.
During refuelling, fuel is levelled between the tanks to equally share fuel between all operating gensets, raising the tanks operating capacity
until the process has been completed.

It is essential to synchronise genset breakers prior to connecting to a busbar already supplied by another power source. Microprocessorcontrolled, easy-to-install packages with no moving parts, DEIFs synchronisers are market-leading choices for checks of frequency, voltage,
IPP
DEIFs synchronising units always calculate when to close the breaker to get the most accurate synchronisation. The close signal will be issued
when phase L1 of the synchronising genset is close to the 12 oclock position compared to the busbar which is also in 12 oclock position.
Critical Power
In dynamic synchronisation, the synchronising genset runs at a different speed from the generator on the busbar. Typically, the synchronising
Rental
genset runs with this difference, called a positive slip frequency, meaning that it runs with a higher speed than the generator on the busbar. The
In these cases, it is possible to synchronise relatively fast because of the adjusted minimum and maximum slip frequencies: even while the
unit is aiming to control the frequency towards its setpoint, synchronising can still occur as long as the frequency is within the limits of the slip

In static synchronisation, the synchronising genset runs at a speed close to the generator speed on the busbar. The aim is to let them run at

exactly the same speed, and with the phase angles between the generator and busbars 3-phase systems matching exactly.

DEIF is committed to providing industry-leading products and services. Controls, equipment and instrumentation products reach the end of
their product lifecycle (EOL) as changes occur in market demand, technology innovation, new product development, or simply when a product
ages and is replaced by a richer technology.
DEIF understands that end-of-life programmes often encourage companies to review the way in which end-of-life activities may affect their
business systems and practices. To accommodate customers product planning strategies, DEIF has established an official End-of-Life Policy
to help you plan for, and transition to new, more advanced product offerings.
The EOL policy described on the following pages applies to DEIF standard products. It does not apply for customer-specific products including
such products that represent modifications or adaptations (hardware and/or software) of standard products to accommodate individual
customer solutions. Special EOL terms may be included in individual agreements covering the supply of such products.

DEIFs regional and local anchors guarantee a glocal view as well as unrivalled response times for maintenance, repairs, replacements or
upgrades, 24/7/365. The groups infrastructure reflects our mission and continued drive to invest in our strategic reach and provide our
partners with convenient and affordable knowledge-sharing, guaranteeing rapid response times for commissioning or unplanned service.
The only market player to offer day-to-day spare part delivery, DEIF maintains a guaranteed three year supply of spare parts for standard
controllers.
As means to combat climate change and preserve natural resources, we are continually looking for new ways to increase the performance and
efficiency of our partners setups.
A DEIF solution is a greener choice because it means optimised operation: life extensions and other advanced technologies also make our
customers assets more valuable and operationally more efficient.
As part of our Green Vision, new specifications and new designs are subject to a number of sustainable goals and requirements.
An ISO 14001-certified company, DEIF has optimised manufacturing processes: we use renewable energy sources and
monitor energy consumption using DEIF technology.

solutions, DEIF engineers and specialists are available for assistance at our Service and Support centres across the globe, guaranteeing marketleading quality solutions to give you a critical commercial edge.
DEIF is the only provider to offer Power Management System testing as a patent-pending Emulation procedure. Simply connect your controllers
to your PC to improve project planning, reduce risks to personnel and equipment and cut commissioning and costs.
141
Because DEIF is a renowned manufacturer in the marine & offshore industry and has made a strategic commitment
to apply its high performance standards across the board. Rather than rely on external testing, the group has invested in
a state-of-the-art type test centre and laboratory.
Our in-house testing and close collaboration with classification societies has given us a level of expertise and experience that allows us to meet
and surpass marine regulations with equipment that features rugged quality hardware designs and constructions.
142
FAT Testing
To avoid installation delays and downtime on site, prior to delivery or commissioning clients want to make sure that equipment operates as
intended and verify that all specifications and contractual requirements have been met.
Equipment or components that fail to meet with specifications or contractual requirements can result in contractual penalties or projects
running out of budget, and catching failures and identifying flaws early in the acceptance process eliminates repetitive later-stage reviews.
DEIF performs independent verification and certification factory acceptance test (FAT) services and supports your project with extensive supply
chain services to ensure the safety of your employees and the proven quality of your factory equipment and components.
HALT Testing
HALT is an abbreviation for Highly Accelerated Life Testing. The test is performed by subjecting the test object to extreme stress until it fails,
including temperature cycling, vibration and repetitive shock, power margining and power cycling.
Unlike type test findings and recommended limits for products when in operation, the objective of the HALT test is to accelerate the time-tofailure and identify the weakest part of a construction for improved design and manufacturing.
The limits applied during the HALT test do not directly indicate the life expectancy of a product in normal operation but the robustness of the
product in question.
143
At heart, DEIF is first and foremost a manufacturer dedicated to customer service and customer satisfaction.
That is why we always accept full responsibility for the quality of our solutions. From idea to implementation, our business partners should
expect nothing but the best from us. Throughout the years, this way of thinking has created a unique mindset that influences the quality of
what we do on all levels.
From start to finish, we do everything we can to make sure that the requirements of each and every customer are met. To us, quality is not just
a key competition parameter it is part of who we are.
144
For security reasons, marine electronics are subject to tight regulations and test requirements to ensure reliable operation without interruption in
hostile environments and under extreme conditions. To withstand vibrations, salt mist and maximum and minimum temperatures, for instance,
DEIF hardware is built and tried for shock resistance and to meet and surpass EMC immunity demands.
We subject all our products Diesel, Gas and Hydro to the same tests and the same rigid quality standards.
Knowing that downtime must be avoided at all cost, DEIF also guarantees the fastest delivery times on the market: from taking an order, our
average delivery time is less than three days with just three to five day deliveries for complete retrofit systems.
Even at this pace, DEIF always performs Automatic Test Sequence on all products prior to shipping, and data are kept on record.
145
Learning By Doing
To achieve full ownership and full return on investments, DEIF offers in-depth courses at our dedicated training facilities for operators and
technicians.
The training sessions aim to optimise your experience with DEIF equipment and prevent future issues, simulating all types of fault conditions
without risk of damage to your systems.
Training sessions are conducted for small groups and give hands-on experience and a greater technical understanding of DEIFs comprehensive
solutions. DEIF training uses simulation boards and patent-pending Emulation Solution in clean, safe and controlled environments.
