CHAPTER 1

OBJECTIVES
I.

General Objectives
After one month of being exposed at Sitio Kapilis, Barangay Suba-Basbas,

Lapu-lapu City, Cebu, the assigned Senior Clerks from Southwestern UniversityMatias H. Aznar Memorial College of Medicine, Inc. should be able to obtain
significant information regarding the family profile selected 100 households of the
aforementioned barangay and come up with a community diagnosis with a
corresponding plan and implementation of health-related activities in response to the
identified community health problems.
II.

Specific Objectives
Within one month of exposure of Sitio Kapilis, Barangay Suba-Basbas, Lapu-

lapu City, Cebu the assigned Senior Clerks will be able to:
1. Know the historical background, geographic location, barangay health
profile and other significant information of Barangay Suba-Basbas.
2. Acquaint themselves with the respective Barangay Captain, midwives,
barangay health workers and barangay tanod.
3. Immerse with the community residents and learn about their ways and
means of living.
4. Gather quantitative and qualitative data by conducting an interview among
randomly selected respondents per household.

5. Identify health problems secondarily related to demographic, social,

economic, and environmental indicators; including cultural factors, health
status of the community, food and nutrition, health resources and organized
community health programs.
6. Provide health teachings to the community residents concerning the
identified community health problem, with its corresponding treatment,
complications and preventive measures.
7. Discuss the results of the survey to the respective Community Heath Team
of the barangay and implement activities in line with identified community
health problem.
8. Convey recommendation based on the acquired results to the next group of
Senior Clerks.

CHAPTER 2
BACKGROUND OF BARANGAY SUBA BASBAS
I.

History
Being separated firm the municipality of Cordava by Gabi River, the barangay
was named as such because during low tide, one can only visualize the sand
beneath the vast plane of water. Thus, the Visayan terms suba, meaning river,
and basbas being interpreted as full of sand, when combined, makes
subabasbas or otherwise known as Sandy River.
During the year 1920, Suba-Basbas was a former sitio of Barangay
Marigondon, until Mr. Mateo Tiro constructed a road connecting Suba-Basbas to
Marigondon. He then established a public school with the help of his constituents,
which paved its way in making the sitio become a barangay in the year 1951,
headed by its first Barangay Captain, Hon. Felipe A. Vano.

II.

Geography
Located on the southern part of the island of Mactan, Barangay
Suba0Basbas is one of the 30 barangays of Lapu-lapu City Situated approximately
seven (7) kilometers away from the city proper. With a total land area of 165.7
hectares, it is bounded by Suba-Masulong to the north, Barnagay Marigondon to
the east and the Municipality of Cordova to the West. It is comprised of 8 sitios,
with an estimated total population of 7, 838 approximately 1,568 households.

Basic Utilities and Services

Barangay Suba-Basbas has most of the necessities of an average barangay:
a primary and secondary public school, an infrastructure for local governance, a
chaperl for spiritual guidance, multiple sari-sari stores, and a health center.
The local health center is manned by a nurse, a midwife with 12 Barangay
Health Workers and a Community Health Team. It operates six days per week,
offering scheduled services from 8:00 am to 12:00 NN. Every Monday, Thursday
and Friday is allotted for consultations, Tuesdays for pre-natal check-ups,
Wednesdays for Expanded Program on Immunizations and Saturdays for the
distribution of maintenance medications for enrolled hypertensive and diabetic

patients. It could also cater the need of pregnant women since it is equipped with
facilities for birthing such as delivery room and a labor room with 3 beds.
Being situated along the coastline, most of the residents means of
livelihood come from selling the abundance of sea life, or the services offered
from multiple-high-end resorts within the vicinity. Their source of water is either
from a deep well within the household or tap water connection from Metro Cebu
Water District (MCWD) and their power supply is provided by Mactan Electric
Company (MECO). Mobile phones and landlines are the most likely means of
communication in the barangay. Their means of transportation is through jeepneys
or public utility vehicles, but the barangay is easily accessible by the local tricycle
or habal-habal.

Table 1 and Figure 4 represent the sex distribution of respondents in Sitio Kapilis. Sitio
Kapilis is comprised of 180 households as of 2015. The group was able to profile 100
households with an overall total population of 452 individuals.
Based on the data gathered majority of Sitio Kapilis populace is comprised of males with
a percentage distribution of 52% while the female populace has a percentage distribution of 48%.

From the 452 individuals profiled 40% of these individuals fall under the Adult category
numbering a total of 183 individuals; followed by Young Adults with 77 individuals with
percentage distribution of 17%; Adolescents with 13% percentage distribution; School Age with
12%; Pre-School with 8%; Elderly age group with 5%; Toddler with 3%; and lastly the Infant
age group contains the least number of population with 6 individuals and a percentage
distribution of 2%.

Based on the Figures above, the Male population is mostly composed of individuals
aging 26-60 years old (31% or 91 residents) , followed by those that fall under the Young Adult
category with a percentage distribution of 18% ; 16% or 38 respondents fall under the School
Age category, Adolescent category with 13 % numbering a total of 30 respondets, Pre-school
children accounts for the 7% of the male population followed by those who fall under Toddler
and Elderly category, both of which has 3% of the Male population. The least number of
individuals which covers 1% of the population are the Infants.

Adults about 43% or a total of 92 individuals. This figure is followed by Young Adults
and Adolescents with percentage distribution of 16%, 12% respectively. Both Pre-school
and School Age children has 9% coverage of the total Female population. 16 (7%) female
respondents are Elderly, 3 % of which are Toddlers while Infants only cover 1% of the
populace.

163 of the populace are Children with a percentage distribution of 36%; 147 (33%) are

accounting approximately 38% of the population, are in or has only reached and has
graduated secondary schooling; 36% or 163 individuals are currently in or has only
reached the primary level; 60 individuals or 13% of the populace are currently in or were
able to reach tertiary school and some also has graduated tertiary education; 8% of the
populace or 35 individuals are under Pre-school level; 19 of them or 4% of the populace
are still not in school or are below 5 years old.

Table and Figure displays the preferred recreational activities of households in

Sitio Kapilis. Most of them, approximately 23% of the populace, spend their free time
sleeping. Alcohol drinking and watching Television comes next with the same percentage
distribution of 14%. Followed by smoking, going to the mall, playing basketball, doing
exercises particularly joining Zumba hops early in the morning or in the afternoon and
swimming, with 11%,10%,9%,8%,7% of the households respectively. 4% enjoys other
types of recreational activities not mentioned above.

Students , with 24%. Followed by those that are unemployed with 22% or 100 residents. These
include the elderlies, infants, children under 5 an still not in school and those that are capable of
working but prefer to stay at home. 15% of the population in Sitio Kapilis are Housewives
number a total of 67 individuals. Respondents who are production, construction workers,
entrepreneur with 11%, 5%, 3% respectively. However, other occupation have the least number
in the population

residents has an average monthly income of <5000 php; 36% (59) of the populace earns 5,00010,000 monthly; where as 13% (21) of them have an income that ranges between 10,000- 15,000

The proponents have grouped the diseases into nine: cardiovascular, neurologic,
congenital, rheumatic, gynecologic, hematologic, infectious, endocrine, pulmonary, renal
and electrolytes and cataract. The diseases of apparently ill residents have been classified
under one or more of above mentioned groups.

Among the apparently ill residents, 63% (24) have cardiovascular disease which
includes hypertension, a previous history of myocardial infarction of cerebrovascular
accident.
3% (1) individual has neurologic pathology, 8% (3) have been diagnosed with
rheumatic disease, 3% (1) has hematologic disorder, 5% (2) individuals have been
diagnosed with an endocrine disorder with diabetes mellitus as the leading disease. 5%
(2) have pulmonary pathology mostly asthma; 3% (1) with renal and electrolytes and 3%
or 1 individual diagnosed of eye cataract.

CHAPTER 5
SITUATIONAL ANALYSIS
I.

Community Dimensions Secondarily Related to Health

There was a total of 452 residents included in the survey, which comprise 55% (as of June 2016,)
of the total population. This number represents a confidence level of more than 95% using the
Slovins formula. Of that number 219 (48%) were females and the remainder were males, 233
(52%). Majority of the population belong to the adult, 25-60 years old, with 40% (183). These
values indicate that they have a high fertility rate, high birth rate, low median age and increased
dependency ratio.
The residents of Sitio Kapilis, majority of them are in or have only finished secondary
education (175, 38%) and this was closely followed by individuals who are currently or have only
graduated primary school (163, 36%). From 452 residents, 420 (93%) are Roman Catholic while
the remainder are Born again Christian and Muslims.
There are 163 of 452 residents who earn for a living. Where majority of them are
production workers. Among the wage-earning group, most of them have a monthly wage on the
range of less than PhP 5,000 (62, 38%) while 311 (64%) who belong to the working group are
dependents and are not working.

Community Dimensions Directly Related to Health

In the population of 45, 8% (38) have an apparent illness and this includes those who

have been diagnosed with acute and chronic disease while the remainder, (414, 92%) are
generally healthy during the time of survey. Cardiovascular disease still leads the pack of
common ailments in the community (24, 63%) and this followed by Pulmonary (5, 12%) and
Rheumatic pathologies (3, 8%).

Cardiovascular disease is common in the age of 50-60 years old followed by those
between 40-50 years each comprising 42% and 25% of the population with cardiovascular
diseases respectively. It is interesting to note that cardiovascular disease are more common in
female (15, 63%) than male (9, 37%) of Sitio Kapilis.
Sitio Kapilis residents sleep an average of less than 8 hours, comprising 62% (280).
Among the 100 households there are still 45% who practice burning of solid wastes. All
the households purchase treated drinking water. 85% have water-sealed toilet, however, there are
10% who have open pits and 5% who dont have toilets.
Rice and alternatives are still being consumed always by each resident. However, 59%
seldom have meat and alternatives on their table. 83% of them have fruits and vegetables in their
meals. 67% have garden with multitude of plants vegetables and 12% have livestock.
Majority 78% seek consult at the local health center while 12% of the residents go to the
hospital for consult and the reminder 10%, consult with a private physician.
All children under 12 years old in Sitio Kapilis have updated immunization75% of
Residents who use contraceptives gets their supply from the local heath center
