Live Control Surface Setup

Live 8 - FCB1010 - 3

UserConfig & Mackie Control

This is a two part control surface setup. With the FCB1010, we setup a Mackie Control Surface
emulation in Live, and we also incorporate a special configuration file for expression pedal control.
Ableton Live allows you to modify a "userConfiguration" file to enable faders to be defined for your
"control surface". Although the FCB1010 is not a control surface in the traditional sense, we modified
that file so we can use the expression pedals to control Live's track faders and the master volume fader.
Live should not be running when you are installing the UserConfiguration file.

Install Wabbit Wanch Configuration

The Wabbit_Wanch_Live folder has to be installed in LIVE first. The folder MUST go in your:
Hard Drive/Users/yourname/Preferences/Ableton/Live 8.2.1/User Remote Scripts/
You may edit the "Userconfiguration.txt" for your own requirements if desired. This is a stock text file
that is supplied by Ableton and the only changes made to it were to enter in CC7 as the master volume
control and CC8-15 for track 1-8 levels in the mixer. The text file is documented.

Live Setup - Preferences

Run Live and select the Preferences from the Live Menu.

Mackie Control Surface Setup - Step 1

1 - Click on the MIDI SYNC label

2 - Select MACKIE CONTROL in the Control Surface Popup
3 - Select the MIDI port your FCB1010 is connected to
4 - Click on the REMOTE ON
Note, you do not need to enable the "Track" for the input MIDI port, nor do you need to select your MIDI
interface for the output (the FCB1010 is a one way device)
Live 8 - FCB1010 - 5

Wabbit Wanch Control Surface Setup - Step 2

To enable the tracker faders you have to select the Wabbit Wanch LIVE configuration.
1 - Select Wabbit_Wanch_Live from the Control Surface Popup menu
2 - Select the SAME MIDI input port you used for the Mackie.
Again, you do not need to select any output port and only the Remote input should be on.

Smooth Expression Pedals

Change the Takeover mode from Pickup to "Value Scaling". This will make the FCB1010's expression
pedals much smoother when you're using them for track or master fader levels.

Programming With Mackie Control

These steps are only examples of how to program some Mackie controls with iFCB that you can send
to the FCB1010. Since we want our comments file to be linked to this command set we are creating, we
need to start a little differently.
You will need to enable Mackie Control as a Control Surface in LIVE for the FCB1010 to control Live.
Note that not all Mackie Control Surface commands will work with Live so you might have to
experiment. SIM mode works good for this.

Step 1 - NEW

Once iFCB is running, the first thing to do is start with NEW. This sets up a default configuration for the
FCB1010.

Comments Link Setup

We want the comments to be linked to this set of patches so we need to disable everything in the last
patch.
1. Click on the View icon to change to Matrix view
2. Scroll to the very last entry (09-10) and click on that line to select it.
3. Press the Backspace KEY all items in that line will be disabled.
Live 8 - FCB1010 - 8

Disable PC1 Column

The LIVE setup does not use PC's so we need to disable them. This is the fastest way to do that:
1. Click on the 00-1 row in the Matrix view
2. Scroll to the 09-9 (second to last entry in the view) and SHIFT CLICK. This will select the entire table
except for the last entry.
3. Press SHIFT 1 (a ! is the character on the keyboard). This is disable the entire PC1 column items.
4. Press SHIFT 8 (*) this will disable Expression Pedal A.

Save

File Menu - Save to save your custom LIVE setup in the iFCB Data Folder.

Live 8 - FCB1010 - 9

Name your Custom Setup

Save your Live Custom setup and then make sure you have the Comments visible AND you're using
the GUI view.

Live 8 - FCB1010 - 10

Link The Comments

File Menu - Comments - LINK will link your custom SYSEX file to the comments. Once you send this
SYSEX to the FCB1010, any time in future that you read the FCB1010 again, your comments fill
automatically be opened and displayed for you.

Change Reference

There are two selections for Mackie control emulation, if you're going to be using LIVE, then select the
Live Control - Mackie. This will ensure that the commands available are the ones you'll be able to use
on the FCB1010 that Live will respond to.
Live 8 - FCB1010 - 11

Select Patch to Program - Example Only

Click on button number 1, bank 00.

Select Command

We're going to make bank 00 - button 1 our Play Selected Clip command.

Drag N Drop

Drag the select command from the list and drop it on the NUMBER popup menu (the popup will
highlight blue if you can drop on it).

Live 8 - FCB1010 - 12

Enable the NOTE

Lastly - Enable the NOTE command with the check box.

Comments

After you've dragged and dropped the command from the list, if you check the Comments list, you'll see
that the original description for this command has been copied to the list for you. Now you have a
reference as to what the command did.
If you don't want the description copied from the reference to your comments list, hold down the
CONTROL key during the drag and drop. Your comments will not change then.

Live 8 - FCB1010 - 13

Bank 00 - Button 2

We've clicked on button 2, found the Stop Arrangement Playback command and dropped it, enabled
the note and we're ready for button three.
You're now free to continue to program the FCB1010 in any order you like. I'd suggest you try to keep
the layouts as logical possible, where say bank 01 is all the commands for track 1, bank 02 for track
2...et al Bank 00 and bank 09 could be for basic navigation or extended editing/recording layouts.

Using Pre-Defined Preset

Live 8 - FCB1010 - 15

Preset Setup
These steps will help you setup some predefined presets for LIVE. If you have not done the "Live
Control Surface Setup" outlined in this manual, go and do that first.
You should not be running either iFCB or LIVE when doing these installations unless the step says so.
The LIVE preset was designed by Jeremy Osborn - www.waysidedrive.com

Presets for iFCB

There are TWO preset files that need to be installed for iFCB to access them.
1. This is the custom iFCB SYSEX file that contains all the mappings.
2. This is the COMMENTS file that contains the references to what the mappings do.
3. This is the USERCONFIGURATION.txt file that you have to install to control track and main fader
levels (outlined in the Expression Pedal Setup section).

Install iFCB Sysex File

The file is called iFCB Jer Live Setup. Copy it to the following location:
/Users/yourname/Library/Application Support/iFCB/Data Folder/

Live 8 - FCB1010 - 16

Install iFCB Comments File

The file is called Jer Live setup. Copy this file to:
/Users/yourname/Library/Application Support/iFCB/Comments/

Run iFCB
Make sure your MIDI interface is connected to both the FCB1010's IN and OUT, power up the
FCB1010 and run iFCB. iFCB will find your FCB1010 and load whatever settings you have there. You
will be replacing these with the LIVE presets

Select Open

Live 8 - FCB1010 - 17

Select the Preset File

Select the iFCB Jer Live setup file you copied into the Data Folder and open it.

Success

This is the screen you should see when you select the preset file. The comments will show what each
of the buttons on your FCB1010 pedal is programmed to do.
Use the SEND to transfer the preset to your FCB1010.
You can now run Live and control it from your FCB1010.

Live 8 - FCB1010 - 18

Preset Layout
The presets are laid out as follows:
Bank 00 - general controls and navigation
Bank 01-08 - track specific controls (arm, solo, volume, mute, etc)
Bank 09 - multitrack controls (editing, recording)
