Unit Title: Graphing Quadratic Equations

Name: Melissa Amlung

Content Area: Integrated Mathematics 2

Grade Level: 10-12

CA Content Standard(s)/Common Core Standard(s):

F-IF.7 - Graph functions expressed symbolically and show key features of the graph, by hand in simple cases and using technology for
more complicated cases.
F-IF.7.a - Graph quadratic functions and show intercepts, maxima, and minima
F-BF.1 - Write a function that describes the relationship between two quantities.
F-BF.3 - Identify the effect on the graph of replacing f(x) by f(x) + k, kf(x), f(kx), and f(x + k) for specific values of k (both positive and
negative); find the value of k given the graphs. Experiment with cases and illustrate an explanation of the effects on the graph using
technology.
F-LE.6 - Apply quadratic functions to physical problems, such as the motion of an object under the force of gravity

Big Ideas/Unit Goals:

What makes a parabola open up or down and left or right?

What makes a parabola shift up or down and left or right?
What makes a parabola wider or narrower?
How do we find the vertex and the axis of symmetry?
How are quadratic functions important in real-life?

Each student will be able to:

learn the standard and vertex forms for a quadratic equation

engage in an online activity in which they will explore shifts and changes in quadratic equations

Students will learn that k will make the parabola shift up or down and h will shift the parabola left or right.

Students will learn that the value of a will make the parabola open upwards, downwards, left, or right and will make it wider or narrower.

Students will apply quadratic functions to physical problems

Unit Summary:

Parabolas are all around us and are an important concept in Algebra/ Integrated Math 2, and in later mathematics. In this unit, we will learn about
graphs of quadratic equations and their graphs. We begin by studying the parent function, y= x^2. We will then examine how the graphs of
quadratic functions can flip, become wider or narrower, shift up or down, and shift left or right. These changes are called transformations.
Students will also learn about axis of symmetry and how to find the vertex/minimum/maximum if the equation. Finally, students will examine
quadratic equations whose parabolic graphs open left or right. Understanding these transformations of quadratic equations is an essential
foundational skill needed that can be later applied to other parent functions/graphs learned in higher mathematics.

Lesson 1
Student Learning
Objective:

Acceptable Evidence
(Assessments):

Students will learn about

transformations of
quadratic functions
presented in vertex form.

Students can sketch the

graph of a quadratic
function given the
equation.

Students will learn that

Students can identify

Lesson Activities:

This lesson will serve as an introduction to the unit. The skills learned in this lesson are
essential and foundational for students to be successful in the rest of the unit as well as in
future mathematics.
Teacher Lecture:
The Prezi Teacher Lecture is accompanied by Guided Notes
The lecture begins by asking students to recall the two parent functions previously learned
and to sketch their graph. (EL) The teacher then goes on to present the Prezi lecture.

and write an equation for

the function given a
sketch of the graph.

Students will learn that k

will make the parabola
shift up or down and h
will shift the parabola left
or right.

During this time, the teacher will ask the students, What do you think will happen to the
graph if? Students are asked to Think Pair Share their ideas with a partner, sketch the
graph, and share/discuss their ideas (F). At the end of the lecture, the class discusses what
has been learned. Students discuss parabolas they can think of in real life. Students then
complete the chart at the end of the guided notes (F).
Flash Cards and Games (F):
Students will then engage in an online Flashcard Activity where they will practice
memorizing quadratic transformations. Then, as a class, students will compete with one
another in an online Game in which they try to match the function to the transformation.
Quiz (S):
Students will take a short Quiz summarizing what they have learned in the unit so far.

Lesson 2
Student Learning
Objective:
Students will learn the
standard and vertex
form for quadratic
equations
Students will apply
quadratic functions to
physical problems

Acceptable Evidence:
Students can accurately
explain the content. For
example, students can
explain why a negative
parabola can have a
vertex, but cannot have
a minimum or why a
cannot equal zero.
Students can create their
own graphs, can name
the vertex, and present
the function in standard
or in vertex form .
Students can apply what
they know about finding
a vertex and axis of
symmetry to find the

Lesson Activities:
The purpose of this lesson is to familiarize students with finding the minimum, maximum, and
axis of symmetry of a quadratic function. Students also learn how to apply these to real-world
problems.
Webercise (F):
Students are assigned a Webercise assignment to be completed with a partner. Students follow
the instructions on the webercise, watching all the listed videos and engage in online, hands-on
activities. First, they will watch videos where students will learn what a vertex is, how to find
the vertex of a quadratic equation. They will then learn how a vertex relates to a finding the
minimum or maximum of a quadratic equation. Students will then watch a video that explains
the standard form of a quadratic equation. Next, students will engage in a hands-on activity in
which they drag and shift the vertex. Students then begin to apply quadratic equations to realworld problems, such as an object being projected into the air and being pulled down by gravity.

maximum height in realworld problems.

Lesson 3
Student Learning
Objective:
Students will learn the
vertex forms for
quadratic equations that
open left/right.
Students will learn that
the value of a will make
the parabola open
upwards, downwards,
left, or right and will
make it wider
or narrower

Acceptable Evidence:
Students can clearly and
accurately organize what
they have learned in a
graphic organizer.
Students can clearly
identify the direction a
parabola will open as
well as how it will shift.
Students can identify the
different axis of
symmetry for up/down
and left/right parabolas.
Students score a passing
score on the Summative
Assessment.

Lesson Activities:

The purpose of this final lesson is to build on what students know about parabolas and to
redefine quadratic equations. Students are introduced to parabolas that open left or right
and learn about how these parabolas translate.
Graphic Organizer (F):
Students follow the directions on the Graphic Organizer Link to complete the assignment.
Students begin by watching a video that redefines what a parabola is and introduces
students to parabolas that open left or right. Next, students visit a website that explains
the equations of left/right parabolas and how they translate. Students then work in pairs
to complete a graphic organizer, summarizing what they now know about all quadratic
equations (up/down, left/right) and how they transform.
Summative Assessment (S):
Students demonstrate their knowledge of the content learned throughout the unit in the
Summative Assessment . The summative assessment tests students on their knowledge of
parabolas that open up, down, left, or right as well as how these parabolas transform. The
summative assessment is twenty questions long. Students must answer five written
questions, five matching questions, five multiple choice questions, and five true or false
questions.
