R&P2- Evidence and Based Practice

Students will demonstrate an understanding of evidence based practice, including the

evaluation, identification, and application of evidence based interventions and the capacity to
document counseling/educational intervention outcomes for clients/consumer/student.
During fall of 2015, I took Advanced Placement with Dr. Bruinekool. The biggest
challenge for me was holding my father accountable for the interventions provided throughout
the length of the class. In retrospect, working with my dad on career development interventions
was a great experience for me. When we begin working together, he did not had an updated
resume, nor had he worked for the last 10 years. I remember, one of the interventions consisted
of completing two career assessments. The Interest Profiler and the Work Value Sorter were
completed in Spanish. After completing the assessments, we reviewed the results. Based on my
fathers decision to not go back to school, we focused on finding a work environment in which
he would be able to built relationships with other employees, be recognized for his work and see
his accomplishments. My father, secured employment at Little Ceasars. He has been working
there since late fall of 2015. A couple of weeks ago, my father was once again promoted and
obtained a raise. He often shares that he would go to work even if they didnt pay him. His
colleagues at work are his family.
The second artifact provided is an educational intervention for students who attended an
ISU camp called Maize, Flor Slowing Romero and I were asked to develop a workshop in which
cultural identity and college access can be explored and promoted amongst high school students.
The intervention was based using Dr. Laura Rendons Validation theory. In summary, my ability
to apply evidence based interventions at a group or individual level is something that will need to
continue to evolve. I plan during my internship on developing educational interventions aimed

specifically at college access for students with disabilities, Dr. Laura Rendons Validation theory
will be one of the theories I use to support my interventions.
