9| What is Synchronous Condenser?
2
Answer: A synchronous motor takes a leading current when over-excited and, therefore, behaves as a
capacitor. An over-excited synchronous motor running on no load is known as Synchronous Condenser.
When such a machine is connected in parallel with the supply, it takes a leading current which partly
neutralizes the lagging reactive component of the load. Thus the power factor is improved.

Answer: There are two criteria about amplifier or oscillator of Barkhausen known as Barkhausen Criteria.
i) The overall gain of the amplifier (oscillator must be unity or greater) must be less than unity.
ii) The overall phase shift must be zero. (Amplifier and oscillator both)
14| What are the condition must be satisfied for synchronizing an alternator?
Answer:
The following synchronizing conditions must be meti) The rms line voltages of the two alternators must be equal.
ii) The two alternators must have the same phase sequence.
iii) The phase angle of the two alternators must be equal.
iv) The frequency of the oncoming alternator must be slightly higher than the frequency of the
running alternator.
15| Why high diversity factor should be the desirable feature of a power system?
Answer:
The ratio of the sum of individual maximum demands to the maximum demand on power station is
known as diversity factor. i.e.,
Diversity factor
From the above definition greater diversity factor means lesser maximum demand. This is turn means that
lesser plant capacity is required. Thus, the capital investment on the plant is reduced.
16| How the direction of rotation of a 3-phase induction motor can be reversed?
Answer:
17| What is feedback? What type of feedback is used in amplifier and oscillator?
Answer: The process of injecting a fraction of output energy of some device back to the input is known as
feedback.
There are two basic types of feedback used as Positive feedback and Negative feedback.
Positive feedback: When the feedback energy is in phase with the input signal and thus aids it, it is called
positive feedback. The positive feedback increases the gain of the amplifier. However, it has the
disadvantages of increased distortion and instability. One important use of positive feedback is in
Oscillators.
Negative feedback: When the feedback energy is out of phase with the input signal and thus opposes it, it
is called negative feedback. Negative feedback reduces the gain of the amplifier. However, the advantages
of negative feedback are: reduction is distortion, stability in gain, increased bandwidth and improved input
and output impedances. It is due to these advantages that negative feedback is frequently employed in
amplifiers.
