Jimmy Snuka Dead At 73

Jimmy 'Superfly' Snuka has died.

The 73-year-old wrestling legend who had been battling stomach cancer
and was told last year that he had
just months to live - has passed away
in hospice care, his daughter WWE
wrestler Tamina Snuka revealed on
Twitter on Sunday.
She wrote: ''I LOVE YOU DAD
#FOREVERMYDAD
#RestWell
#FamiliesAreForever
#BestDad
#SnukaLegacy (sic)''.
Snuka's ill-health was revealed by his
lawyer in December, to explain why the
wrestler could not appear in court over
third-degree murder and involuntary
manslaughter charges relating to the

death of his girlfriend Nancy Argentino

in 1983.
The star - whose real name is James
Wiley Smith Reiher - was named as a
''person of interest'' immediately after
her death, but no charges were brought
until over 30 years later.
He was charged in September 2015 but
declared mentally incompetent to stand
trial at a hearing in June 2016.
Snuka had a glittering wrestling career
and is best known for his time in the
WWF (now the WWE) in the 1980s.
His nickname 'Superfly' derived from
the fact that he was one of the first
superstars to bring a high-flying style
to the ring.

He was inducted into the WWF Hall

of Fame in 1996 and was the inaugural
ECW Heavyweight Champion in
Eastern Championship Wrestling (later
Extreme Championship Wrestling).
His children, Jimmy Reiher, Jr. and
Tamina are also wrestlers.
Wrestler-turned-actor Dwayne 'The
Rock' Johnson was one of the first stars to
pay tribute to Snuka following his death.
He wrote: ''Our family @TaminaSnuka
asked me to share the sad news that her dad
Jimmy Snuka has just passed away. Alofa
atu i le aiga atoa. #RIPSuperfly (sic).''
Jim Ross added: ''Our condolences
to the family and friends of Jimmy
''Superfly'' Snuka who died earlier

today after losing his fight with

stomach cancer. RIP (sic).''
A message on the WWE website said:
''WWE is saddened to learn that WWE
Hall of Famer Jimmy ''Superfly'' Snuka
has passed away.
''Snuka is regarded by many as the
pioneer of high-flying offense because
of his Superfly Splash from the top
turnbuckle. His dive off the top of
the steel cage onto Don Muraco at
Madison Square Garden as hundreds of
flash bulbs went off will forever live as
one of the most memorable moments
in WWE history.
''WWE extends its condolences to
Snuka's family, friends and fans.''

22-Year-Old Son Held Dead Woman's Family

Seeks Answers
Builder When He Died

A 22-year-old man was still reeling

from weakness a day after holding his
construction worker father till he died
after falling from the roof of the Suva
Hotel on Wednesday.
He gave his last breath in my arms,
said Janul Abid who along with his
nine-year-old brother Rizwan Dean
accompanied their father Anul Hafizu
Dean, 46, to work that day.
Mr Dean fell to his death from the roof
of the three story hotel at the junction
of Marks Street and Waimanu Road in
central Suva City.
He was repairing a leak when the
transparent polycarbonate roof gave
way from the top of the building.
Mr Dean was working for a Chinese
owned construction firm.
The last thing he told me was to hold
the ladder and wait for him inside the
building, Mr Abid said.
After a few minutes when I looked up
to the roof where he was, I could see a
big hole and I was looking directly to
the sky.
My dad was on the floor.
While I was holding my dad, all I
wished for was for him to live.

His mother Camari Dauna said his son

was very weak.
When I saw my husbands body, I
wished I could keep him with me, she
said.
I will cry every day because I will
really miss him.
Ms Camari said only the Lord would
be her help from now.
The mother of seven has been a stroke
patient for three years.
God has taken him to a better place,
she said.
The late Mr Deans younger sister,
38-year-old Marian Mario, said for all of
her life she had been staying with him.
Everyone in the family will miss
him, she said.
We were very close and from now on
I will be here to support his wife and
their children.
Ms Mario said she would always be
there and for her nieces and nephews
whenever they needed her.
I will make sure I take good care
of them and will always support my
sister-in-law, she said.
The late Mr Dean was laid to rest at the
Nasinu Cemetery.

A ban has been imposed by the Ministry

of Education on all junk food and fizzy
drinks sold from school canteens.
Minister of Education Mahendra Reddy
said a the ban would be effective from
March.
Canteens already have some stocks
leftover.
He said the school canteen policy would
be sent out to all schools next week.
It is called a Food and Canteen Policy,
because we have boarding facilities
as well. Its not only for canteen but
applicable for boarding facilities as
well, he said.
Mr Reddy said there was no restriction
on the type of food which students
would bring for their lunch.
No students will be penalised but
we will penalise our school canteens.
What students bring, will be parents
responsibility, he said.
Text books
Mr Reddy said about 90 to 100 per cent
of the text books were in schools last
year.
But we have sent text books to every
school for a buffer for those students
who wont return it, he said.

Mr Reddy confirmed that they would
continue their Milk and Weet-Bix
initiative.
Bus fare voucher
Mr Reddy said all continuing students
would continue to get their bus fare voucher.
But within six weeks time they have
to submit another revised form just to
ensure their parents income has not
changed, he said.
New students will have a 24-hour turn
around. So parents can bring the form
to schools on Monday and on the next
day they should get it.
Schools opening
Mr Reddy said all schools were ready
to be opened next week and the opening
of two new schools.
There will be two grand opening of
two schools next week, he said.
One new school in Tacirua.
In the last 20 years no Government
could give them a high school. This
is the first high school in the area and
it will be opened by Prime Minister
Voreqe Bainimarama and Queen
Victoria School (QVS) will also be

Nadera Family Loses Tragic End To Village

Home In Morning Blaze

A family in Nadera are homeless after

they lost their home in a fire.
Ritesh Chand, 36, Ashika Devi, 28,
mother Ben Mati, 72, and three children
lost their home in a fire at around 3am
at Ratu Dovi Road in Nadera, Nasinu.
Mr Chand said the fire started from
the front left flat, which was under
renovation.
We did not know about the fire until
my wife woke up around 3am and saw
our kitchen in flames, he said.
By the time we ran outside with the
kids, and then we saw our front two
flats were up in flames.
We did not know what to do or how to

handle the things, but luckily our aunt

was here to help us in calling the Police
and fire assistance.
Our flat, which the fire initially started
from, was under renovation for over two
weeks now, without any electricity or
any such thing that could cause the fire.
One of our front flats was rented by
a tenant who was a distant relative for
the past many years.
We just thank God that none of us
were injured during the fire and we
managed to save our back flat.
Police and National Fire Authority
officials have yet to determine the
cause of the fire and cost of the damage.

Government departments in the

Western Division continue to work
collaboratively to keep the public
informed and better prepared for
natural disasters.

that depression or disturbance will
pass through the Western Division,
Mr Tagicakibau said.

can actually provide to assist in the

the need to better equip emergency
operation centres.
I have worked on the Divisional
Emergency operations centre in
Lautoka and we have brought it up to
some standard that will enable us to
effectively respond to the plight of the
general public out there, he said.
He said the Government departments
in the Western Division need to be

updated in terms of their status of

preparedness.
Its so that we are able to assist the
public and respond very quickly to
anything that might happen in the
Western Division, Mr Tagicakibau
said.
I have also done the one in Nadi
and were working on the Emergency
Operation Centres throughout the
Western Division.
If the platforms are not good, it will
take time for us to respond, but these
are some of the things we are working
with in the background.

THE parents of 16-year-old Russell

Simpson Rokara Taloga returned to
their home at Valelevu in Nasinu from
a weekend trip to Navua without their
son who drowned while swimming in
the Nakavu River last Sunday.
Jolame Smith, 37, said he could still
recount the incident that occurred
on Sunday afternoon and said it was
Russell's first trip to Nakavu Village in
Navua.
"We went down on Sunday for a feast
and Russell and his cousins wanted to
go swimming so they said they would
take the lead but I told them to go after
they had lunch," Mr Smith said.
"When it happened, I was there. He
could not keep up with the current
because it kept on changing and when
he tried to swim across to where I was,
it was too strong, so he decided to turn
back and that's when he got caught in

the current.
"I immediately started looking for
bamboo so that I could help him but
there was none. I was about 30 metres
away and the boys that were swimming
with him were about 15 metres away
but they were still too late. We searched
the river but we could not find him. He
was found a few villages down, near
Raiwaqa settlement."
Mr Smith said Russell, who was a Year
11 student at Yat Sen School in Suva,
was an energetic, caring and smart
boy who had participated in various
sporting activities.
Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro said
a post-mortem examination would be
conducted to determine the cause of
death as investigations continue. The
drowning death toll currently stands at
one compared with three for the same
period last year.

THE plummeting tourism numbers from

our biggest source market, Australia, is a
concern, says Opposition spokesperson
on tourism Viliame Gavoka.
Mr Gavoka, who has a wealth of
experience in the tourism industry,
made the comment after official
statistics revealed a decline in visitor
arrivals from Australia.
According to the Fiji Bureau of
Statistics (FBoS), Australian visitor
arrivals fell by 1.2 per cent to 359,100
for the 12 months to November last
year compared with 363,591 for the
same period in 2015.
Fiji Hotel and Tourism Association
president Dixon Seeto had earlier
highlighted similar sentiments that
visitor arrivals from Australia were an
area of concern.
Mr Seeto said the numbers were not
as expected and was something they
needed to work on.
Meanwhile, Mr Gavoka lamented the
significant drop in hotel occupancy
from 60.3 per cent in 2015 to 52.4 per
cent in the third quarter of last year.
"It is now below 60 per cent.
"It was 82 per cent in 2005 and should
have stayed at that level if Australia
was firing," he said.
The bureau also noted major decreases
in occupancy along the Coral Coast,
Lautoka and northern areas.
Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort, one of
the resorts along the Coral Coast,
had recorded a decrease in their

occupancies from June through to

September last year.
Resort general manager Peter Hopgood
earlier told this newspaper that this was
because of a drop in their Australian
business.
Mr Hopgood said a survey conducted
on their past guests highlighted that
the cost to come to Fiji had risen
substantially over the past five years.
He said tourists had opted for other
destinations such as Bali and Thailand
as they were a lot less expensive.
Mr Gavoka said the reason given that
Fiji was too expensive should not be
regarded as an excuse.
"We have always been an expensive
destination relative to Asia, but our
marketing highlighted the many ways
we are unique," he said.
"Today we appear to be apologising
about our prices."
While Mr Gavoka welcomed the
increases to the marketing budget for
Tourism Fiji, he said people must be
held accountable on how they spent
this budget.
"Whatever is spent must have a return
on investment (ROI), which has always
been standard operating procedure
(SOP) for Tourism Fiji," he said.
Mr Gavoka said there needed to be more
robust dialogue which contributed to
the vibrancy of tourism.
"People should speak up; they know
what needs to be done and should not
accept the status quo," he said.

Tikoca Spent $94k Funds On Sons Education,

Court Told

Ratu Isoa Tikoca used $94,526.73 of

public funds for his sons education,
the Suva Magistrates Court was told.
Former Director Corporate Services for
the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kelera
Niutaumaki, made this statement in
her evidence as the first prosecution
witness.
Isoa Tikoca appeared before Magistrate
Makereta Mua. He is charged by the
Fiji Independent Commissiom Against
Corruption for failing to declare his
liabilities before the 2014 General
Elections. He has pleaded not guilty.
It is alleged that his failure was
contrary to Section 24(2) (a) (viii) and
Section 24(5) of the Political Parties
Registration, Conduct, Funding and
Disclosures Decree No 4 of 2013.
It is alleged that Tikoca had spent a
total amount of $94 526.73 on his sons
school fees to St Josephs College in
Brisbane, Australia.
During chief examination, FICAC
Prosecutor, Rashmi Asalam asked the

witness to state how the matter began.

Ms Kelera told the court that she
was directed by the Public Accounts
Commission in 2015 to write to Tikoca
to pursue the reactivation of recovery
of money owed by him.
Tikoca was the High Commissioner of
Fiji to Papua New Guinea on April 10,
2006.
Mr Asalam submitted in court that
the Public Service Diplomatic
and Consular Services Regulation
stipulated that the Diplomat or High
Commissioner were recommended to
send their children to a school in the
country that they resided in.
However, defence lawyer, Kitione
Vuataki argued that it was only a
recommendation but not mandatory.
According to the Auditor Generals
Report, Niutaumaki told the court that
the action carried out by Tikoca was
not authorised by the Public Service
Commission.
The Court asked Ms Niutaumaki on

chances of reconsideration for Tikoca

after hearing that he had written a
letter of reconsideration to the Public
Accounts Committee.
However, Ms Niutaumaki said the
committee could have considered a

reconsideration if the letter was sent

before the expenses were paid years
ago.
The Prosecution will be calling two
more witnesses while the Defence will
be calling three to four witnesses for
the trial.

Wholesale, Retail Sectors Promising - Mueller-Teut

Investment Fiji chief executive, Godo
Mueller-Teut said the wholesale and
retail sector looks promising in 2017.
He said the sector made more than 20 per
cent of the proposed projects in all the
sectors for the past 11 months of 2016.
He further said other sectors including the
agriculture, forestry and manufacturing
were looking positive for the year.
The number of proposed projects in
agriculture and forestry has increased
by close to 60 per cent since 2014, Mr
Mueller-Teut said.
In addition, he said the focus was also
now on exporters.

Fiji is currently engaged in actively
supporting exporters, both in terms

of capability development and path to

market programmes.
Investment Fiji always had strong
focus on process and compliance, was
reactive to inquiries and co-operated

8 1/2 Years For Aggravated

Robbery Of $50

A Suva Magistrate told a teenager

charged with aggravated robbery that it
is an indictable offence.
Magistrate Jioji Boseiwaqa made this
comment when sentencing a 19-yearold for eight and a half years for
robbing a man of his phone worth $90
and $50 cash.
This is an indictable offence that
was transferred to the High Court and
the High Court subsequently granted
this court to determine this matter,
Magistrate Boseiwaqa said.
Sailasa Qalivere who had pleaded
guilty to the offence was jailed.
His accomplice, Aca Dalituicama had
pleaded not guilty.
On July 3, 2016, in Suva, Qalivere used
force on Umesh Chand before robbing
him of his cash and one Nokia mobile

phone.
The court heard that Qalivere in a coordinated operation stole from the
victim while he was walking towards
the bus station along Victoria Parade.
The incident was later reported and
Qalivere was identified by the victim,
but his money and mobile phone were
not recovered.
For mitigating factors, the court
considered his early guilty plea, he was
remorseful, a first offender and had cooperated with the Police.
According to Section 18 (2) of the
Sentencing and Penalties Decree 2009,
Qalivere was not given a non-parole period.
Magistrate Boseiwaqa said: The court
applies this section on the basis that the
defendant is a first offender at 19 years
of age.

8 Years For Attempted

Robbery
Public service drivers provide an
important service to the community
and need to be protected, the Suva
Magistrates Court heard.
Suva Magistrate, Jioji Boseiwaqa
emphasised this while sentencing a
man charged with attempted robbery to
eight years imprisonment.
Asaeli Vakananui Nabakua, 21, was
convicted for attempting to rob a Shore
Buses bus driver in March last year.
Public service drivers provide an
important service to the community
and must be protected from such
perpetrators.
This sentence is deterrent to future
perpetrators and also to rehabilitate the
offender.

He is to be taken immediately to
his sentence, Magistrate Boseiwaqa
ordered.
The court heard that on March 14,
2016, Nabakua attempted to commit
theft by using force on a bus driver,
Akuila Vakadranu and attempted to
steal his money box.
Nabakua pleaded guilty to the offence.
For aggravating factors, the court
heard that the incident caused serious
injuries to the bus driver which was a
fracture to the left nasal bone for which
he underwent a special treatment.
For mitigating factors, the court
considered that he was remorseful and
was a first offender.
His non-parole period is seven years.

Long Serving Officer Praises Leadership

Workshop

Womens leadership skills with Fiji

Corrections Service will be enhanced
after the two-day workshop, says a
long service Fiji Corrections Services
(FCS) officer.
FCS assistant commissioner Salote
Panapasa made the comments during
the FCS leadership workshop.
Ms Panapasa, who has been in the
corrections services for more than 30
years now, believes the leadership skills
would help improve on the service
delivery of women in the service.
As
ladies,
we
have
many
responsibilities and with those
responsibilities come with many
challenges despite the fields we are in,
she said.
As working wives, we have challenges
faced at home with family and children
and this is where we need to show good
leadership.
Stand tall among challenges at home
as well as at workplace is where we all
need good leadership skills.
I think these two days of leadership

workshop will improve our skills for

us working mothers not only for work,
but at home also, she said.
There are seven women officers and
four civilian staff members attending
the workshop.
Eighty-four officers from the 13
corrections institute attended the training.
Ms Panapasa said they had learned
how to apply the different leadership
styles in different situations.
It helps us as officers to apply those
different leadership styles in different
situations at work and even at home,
she said.
I thank the commissioner for initiating
this forum for including us female
officers to gain more, better knowledge
on leadership skills and roles.
Assistant Superintendent Commandant
Josua Rokodausiga said the Corrections
was always a challenge when it comes
to leadership in assisting the offenders
and staff members.
This workshop is beneficial for FCS
officers to provide assistance and better

leadership services for our juniors and

colleagues in the workforce, he said.
I think the Minister has really
motivated the FCS officers to become

better and responsible leaders.

Jone Usamate, was the main speaker.

Three people were shown appreciation

by the Indian High Commission for
promoting the Hindi language in Fiji.

Jahan, teacher Sweta Dutt Chaudhary
and local singer Jimmy Subhaydas
were acknowledged at the Indian High
Commissions headquarters in Suva
during World Hindi Celebrations on
Tuesday night.
Mr Subhaydas travelled from Levuka
to be part of this celebration.
I feel so happy and honoured to
be appreciated for promoting Hindi
language in Fiji.
During 1960s, I used to watch lots of
Bollywood movies in the theatre with
my iTaukei friends, he said.
Mr Subhaydas said by watching
Bollywood movies, he gained interest
in singing Hindi songs.
I always tell my iTaukei friends if
they can sing Hindi songs, they can
sing any songs.

be the appreciated for promoting Hindi

I only came to be part of World Hindi
Day celebrations, but never expected
to be appreciated.
I have been learning Hindi language
since my childhood, she said.
Ms Chaudhary said: I am so thankful
to my mother Shila Wati for her support
after my father passed away when I
was young.
My mother is the reason why I am
here today.
After this achievement, I will continue
to promote Hindi language in my
community, she said.
Ms Chaudhary said she would
encourage young people to learn
and read the Hindi language because
their culture and language is their
identity.

younger generation if we want to carry

If we encourage our children to speak
in Hindi, this would be best way to

Inflation At 3.9PC
THE Fiji Bureau of Statistics (FBoS)
says the average annual rate of inflation
for the 12 months to December 2016
was 3.9 per cent, while the month-oncomparable-month inflation rate also
stood at 3.9 per cent.
This was after comparing the average
Consumer Price Index (CPI) for the
12 months to December 2016 with the
average for the 12 months in 2015 and
comparing the CPI for December 2016
with that of December 2015.

The FBoS says the two measures

of inflation used in Fiji are, firstly,
comparing the average CPI over the
past 12 months with the previous 12
months while the other compares the
CPI in the current month with the CPI
in the same month the previous year.
The report said higher prices were
recorded in expenditures on food and
non-alcoholic beverages (+0.5 per
cent), alcoholic beverages, tobacco
and narcotics (+0.5 per cent), and

restaurants and hotels (+0.2 per cent)

while lower prices were recorded for
clothing and footwear (-0.2 per cent),
furnishings, household equipment and
household maintenance (-0.4 per cent),
health (-0.7 per cent) and recreation
and culture (-0.7per cent). The FBoS
said some price changes were recorded

in other expenditure classes but these

balanced out during the month.
The CPI is compiled to show average
changes in prices of goods and services
purchased by households nationwide
with monthly price collections
carried out in the main urban centres
nationwide.

Three Flee For Their Lives From Out-OfControl Car

A couple and their tenant are counting

themselves lucky after a speeding car
veered off the road and stopped short
of ploughing through their house.
Landlord Ajay Prasad and his wife and
tenant Simeli Naciqa had to flee for their
lives as the out-of-control car headed
towards their house at Adi Davila Rd,
Davuilevu Housing, near Nausori.
The female driver, a man and two
children who suffered bruises were
taken to Nakasi Health Centre for
treatment.
Mr Prasad said they were thankful that
a power pole which the car hit slowed
it down.
Otherwise the car would have smashed
into the house.
Mr Prasad said he was on the front
lawn with his wife when they heard the
sound of a speeding car, a loud bang
before seeing the vehicle spun once
from the impact before sliding heading
towards their home and crashing to the
side of their tenants flat.
The kids (passengers) were bruised

and crying while a man sitting behind

the passenger seat was bleeding badly
from a cut on his wrist and a badly
fractured shoulder, Mr Prasad said.
His tenant, Simeli Naciqa, who was
washing his dishes had a clear view of
the accident from his kitchen window.
The car was already losing control
when it was coming down the hill
and colliding head on with the lamp
post just metres from our home, Mr
Naciqa said.
I ran to the other side of my flat when
I saw the car heading for the side of my
flat, he said.
He returned to the scene just seconds
from the impact and started assisting
the victims beginning with the injured
man, the two children and the driver.
We, (him and Ajay) pulled the injured
man and lay him on the lawn and
carried the two kids who were crying
away from the accident scene.
The elder of the two children, he said,
was sobbing and asking her mother at
the same time as to why she couldnt

An established Unitec lecturer has been

sent to jail for almost five years for
sexually offending against two young
girls for more than five years.
However, Shaneel Shaieshka Narayan,
45, still does not admit his offending.
The former computer sciences lecturer
was sentenced at the Auckland District
Court to four years, nine months in
prison after being found guilty by a
jury last year.
He was convicted of one count of
sexual violation by unlawful sexual
connection, six counts sexual conduct
with a child under 12 and one charge
of sexual conduct with a person under
16 years old.
The young victims - aged between
9 and 12 years old over the period of
offending - were known to Narayan.
According to the case's facts, between
2008 and 2013 Narayan indecently
assaulted the girls by standing behind
them and rubbing their bodies, getting
them to climb into bed with him while
he was naked while making a game of
it.
Narayan also sexually violated one of
the girls by rubbing her crotch while in
the car and digitally penetrated her.
Because of what he did, the court heard
how one of the girls said she now
suffers nightmares, can sometimes
only sleep three hours at a time causing
her to miss school which made her fear
her grades would suffer.
She also suffered depression and
needed medication, had no close
friends because she was insecure, had
suicidal thoughts and the trauma of the
matter going through the courts made

her suffer further.

The other girl said what Narayan did
change her as a person, caused her to
have unhealthy eating habits and she
swung between anorexia and weight
gain.
She described having a lack of
motivation, increased anxiety and
difficulties communicating with males.
Narayan was a computer sciences
lecturer for 16 years, before resigning
late last year after he was convicted.
Crown prosecutor Scott McColgan said
Narayan's offending was opportunistic
and illustrated a "predatory and prurient
ongoing interest in these girls".
"Mr Narayan would seize upon
moments when he could offend against
these girls and do so."
This showed there was some sense of
planning or premeditation involved in
the offending which was an aggravating
factor, McColgan submitted.
However, Narayan's lawyer, Sam
Wimsett, said outside of this offending
the former lecturer provided service to
his community.
He did this through his role at Unitec
where he worked for 16 years and as a
volunteer at a Hindi school on Sundays.
Narayan's only other convictions were
ones for "foolishly" sitting an exam
for a student and a "minor incident"
involving domestic violence, Wimsett
said.
The defendant also has a baby on the
way with his partner of two years and
so the impact of his imprisonment
would be significant on her, the lawyer
argued.
Judge Josephine Bouchier said even

"It is just splitting the rest of the
Opposition block and diminishing our
hope of getting enough numbers to
effect the change," he said.
Mr Rabuka said SODELPA was open to
the joint co-ordinators of the proposed
party Mick Beddoes and Peter
Waqavonovono for discussions.
"Yes, they are part of the open arms

approach that we are taking, they are

welcome to come and talk with us."
Mr Beddoes said Mr Rabuka's
comments did not make sense.
"There are already six Opposition
parties registered, so suggesting
our proposed HOPE is splitting the
Opposition is nonsense," he said.
Mr Beddoes said it was expected of
"disgruntled" SODELPA members to
move to the proposed party following
its successful registration.
"But this will not be a significant
number because my last check of
SODELPA's financial membership
showed it stood at about 375 members
and about 250 of these members were
registered at the last disputed AGM.

"I am not sure how much it has

increased by, but yes, we do have
unhappy SODELPA members who will
be joining us once we are registered,"
he claimed.
Mr Beddoes said the proposed party's
main focus was to attract dissatisfied
supporters from other political parties
to its ranks.
"Given that they did not vote for any
of the existing registered opposition
parties in 2014, something new
and refreshing like our proposed
HOPE, with a youthful and dynamic
leadership, provides them with a solid
alternative to consider.
"We are not part of Mr Rabuka's
open arms approach, our ongoing

Sector Sets Export Goals

RICE farmers in the Northern Division

are finding it hard to continue with rice
planting during this wet weather.
The farmers along Vuo, Malau and
Vunika described the rain as a bad
beginning to the new year.
Vunika rice farmer Chiranji Lal said they
had planned to go out farming this week
but all changed because of the rain.
"I went out to the farm in the morning
when the sun was up to apply
chemicals on the wild grass and as
soon as I reached home, the heavy rain
fell and same time I knew that all those
chemicals have gone to waste," he said.
Mr Lal, who has been a farmer for
more than 50 years, said last year
and beginning of this year they had
experienced continuous rain that
caused floods on his farm.
"Rainy weather is good for planting

rice but too much of rain can be bad

too."
Another farmer from Vuo, Vimlesh
Prakash said the rainy weather was
good for him as he worked long hours
on his farm.
"I have two rice farms; one is flooded
due to heavy rain and the other is where
we are planting on right now," he said.
"This weather is good for planting rice
and we have been out this morning just
pulling out weeds and replanting."
With the same sentiments, Rajnesh Lal
said he was thankful that there was rain
but he hoped that it did not cause any
flooding on his rice farm.
"This is a good period to plant rice but
we hope that the same weather from
last year does not come again and we
hope that we will plant more this year
so we can increase our productions."

Services Rosy Akbar has been
disturbed by a Christmas carol clip
which has nurses in uniform singing
about patients smells which went
viral on social media.
Ms Akbar through a press release sent
yesterday also gave a strong warning
that any behaviour that undermined
the professional standards in the civil
service would not be condoned.
The video shows nurses singing the
Christmas carol Jingle Bells with an
altered version on the lines that says:
Jingle bell, patient smells, admits on

the way. Oh what a fun it is to work

every holiday.
Ms Akbar said: The Ministry of Health
and Medical Services has launched a
thorough investigation of a video that
features a number of nurses in uniform
and has reportedly gone viral on social
media.
The contents of the video are
disturbing and I have asked the Director
of Nursing to initiate a detailed and
urgent investigation.
Ms Akbar has apologised to the
patients and the public who may have
been offended by watching the clip.

At this stage, I would also like to offer

the Ministrys sincere apologies to
any patients or members of the public
who may have been offended by the
behaviour portrayed, which I know
is not typical of the many dedicated
nurses working in our health system,
she said.
I am sure the staff involved did not
intend to show contempt for their
patients, but that is no excuse for the
conduct shown on this video.
Ms Akbar said the ministry continues
to nurture a workforce that is
professional, caring and shows respect

Spicy Crabs in Coconut milk

INGREDIENTS
2 Crabs-cleaned, cut, cracked (soak in
of 1/2 a lemon juice)
1 med Onion sliced
1 tomato sliced
1 tsp Cumin
1/4 tsp Mustard seeds
5 tbsp fresh crushed ginger and garlic
1 red hot fresh chilli
2 sprigs Curry leaves
3 Tbs cooking oil
1/2 tsp curry powder
2 tsp Coriander & cumin powder
1 tsp garam masala powder
1 tsp paprika
salt to taste
1 can coconut milk
Cilantro for Garnish
METHOD
In a pan heat oil on med heat
Add cumin, mustard seeds

Add Onion and saute till light brown

Add ginger, garlic, chili, saute for 3
mins or till slightly brown
Add all the masala and give it a good
stir for a minute
Add tomato
Add 1/4 cup water turn the heat to
simmer and let the masala steam cook
with the lid on for about 5 mins or till
the water dries up and the oil separates
from the masala.
Add the crab and cook on med low heat
for 10 mins
Add 1 cup of water and cook on low to
med flame for 10 mins
Add coconut milk and cook for another
5 mins
Simmer and cook until the sauce
consistency desired.
Add cilantro for garnish

1/4 cup sesame oil
1 Tbsp. ground red pepper (cayenne)

Mix first 3 ingredients until blended;

1 1/2 pounds salmon fillet
Salt and pepper to taste

5 slices lemon
5 sprigs fresh dill weed

Directions
Preheat oven to 450 degrees F (230
degrees C). Spray two large pieces of
aluminum foil with cooking spray.

Place salmon fillet on top of one piece of

foil. Sprinkle salmon with salt, pepper,
garlic and chopped dill. Arrange lemon
slices on top of fillet and place a sprig
of dill on top of each lemon slice.
Sprinkle fillet with chopped scallions.
Cover salmon with second piece of foil
and pinch together foil to tightly seal.
Place on a baking sheet or in a large
baking dish.
Bake in preheated oven for 20 to 25
minutes, until salmon flakes easily.

Mediterranean Diet Not Linked To Weight

Gain: Study

Consuming a Mediterranean diet rich

in vegetable fats such as olive oil or
nuts does not lead to significant weight
gain compared to a low-fat diet, finds a
new research.
The findings showed that fats from
nuts, fish and phenolic-rich vegetable
oils found in the Mediterranean diet
are healthier than fats from meat and
processed foods.
"Our study shows that a Mediterranean
diet rich in vegetable fats had little effect
on bodyweight or waist circumference
compared to people on a low-fat diet,"
said lead author Ramon Estruch from
the University of Barcelona, Spain.
A Mediterranean diet has been known

to reduce mortality, heart diseases as

well as cancer.
However, the fear of eating an all fat
diet means that a low-fat diet continues
to be recommended as a means of
weight loss, the researchers said.
"The study certainly does not imply
that unrestricted diets with high
levels of unhealthy fats such as butter,
processed meat, sweetened beverages,
deserts or fast foods are beneficial,"
Estruch added.
For the study, published in 'The Lancet
Diabetes & Endocrinology' journal,
the team included 7447 participants
(men and women) aged 55-80 who
were randomly assigned to one of

three groups - an unrestricted calorie

Mediterranean diet rich in olive
oil (2543), an unrestricted calorie
Mediterranean diet rich in nuts (2454),
or a low-fat diet where the advice was
to avoid all dietary fat (2450).
After five years, the low-fat diet group
(from 40 per cent to 37.4 per cent)
showed a decrease in the total fat
intake and both Mediterranean diet
groups (40 per cent to 41.8 per cent in
olive oil; 40.4 per cent to 42.2 per cent
in nuts) showed slight increase.
The percentage of energy intake from
protein and carbohydrate decreased in
both Mediterranean diet groups.
On average, participants in all three

groups lost some weight with the

greatest weight loss seen in the
Mediterranean diet with olive oil group
(0.88 kg weight reduction in the olive
oil group, compared to 0.60 kg for the
low-fat diet group and 0.40 kg for the
nuts group).
"Calorie-obsessed
caveats
and
warnings about healthier, higher-fat
choices such as nuts, phenolic-rich
vegetable oils, yoghurt should also be
dropped. We must abandon the myth
that lower-fat, lower-calorie products
lead to less weight gain," commented
Dariush Mozaffarian, Professor at
Tufts University in the US, in a linked
article.

won't be branded lazy for it! Experts say
that stretching your body gently post
waking up, helps deal with the sluggish

Do the following stretching exercises,

Sit with your legs crossed in the lotus
position. As you stretch out your

interlace fingers. Your palm should be

Then, slowly (from your waist) bend

towards your right as far as you can,

come back straight up and then bend
towards your left.
This stretches your upper body,
shoulders, arms and obliques.
Lie down on your back. Now, raise
your leg and bring one knee towards
your stomach and hold it with your
opposite hand. Next, gently twist your
spine as you pull your knee towards
the floor across your body. You don't
need to touch the floor with your knee.
The key is to keep both your shoulders
on the floor as you stretch and twist
your spine. Once back to the starting
position, you can do the opposite side.
This stretches your spine, back and
glutes.

Sit with your legs crossed and place

both hands behind you with palms
flat on the floor and fingers pointing
outwards. Shift your weight to your
hands as you slowly let your head fall
back. Apply pressure on your palms as
you lift off your body and butt off the
floor, and you slowly bring your chest
and hips towards the ceiling. Pause for
a few seconds, go back to the starting
position and repeat.
This stretches your hips, abs and chest.
Stand straight and inhale as you reach
your arms high up over your head.
Stretch your arms up as you gradually
stand on your toes. Feel your entire
body stretching. Exhale and return
to the standing position. Now slowly

bend forward and touch your toes. Feel

every bone in your spine bend one after
the other slowly. Avoid bending your
knees. You can feel your entire torso
stretch, beginning from your neck, to
upper back, middle back, lower back,
hamstrings, feet, shoulders and hands.
This stretches your entire body
neck, back and torso.

New details emerging after the death of
legendary actor Om Puri have revealed
that the actor wanted to meet his son,
who was staying with his former wife
Nandita, and had even visited their
residence. The latest revelations came
after Oshiwara police, which has
registered a case of accidental death
after the actor's demise, recorded the
statement of producer Khalid Kidwai,
who claimed to have been with Puri till
a few hours before his death.
"Om Puri wanted to meet his son Ishan
on Thursday evening. So we (Kidwai
and Om Puri) went to Trishul building
where his ex-wife Nandita lives with
Ishan but were unable to meet them as
both Nandita and Ishan had gone for a
party. Om Puri then had an argument
over the phone with Nandita and asked
them to come soon as he wanted to
meet his son," read the statement.
"He poured a drink in his glass and
waited for almost 45 minutes at
Nandita's flat. But when they did not
turn up, he took the glass and liquor
bottle and started drinking in the car.
After finishing the drink, we left,"
added Kidwai's statement.
Sixteen-year-old Ishan is a special
child and was very close to Om Puri.
When contacted by Mirror, Kidwai,
producer of the movie Rambhajan
Zindabad, said that his statement has
been recorded twice by the police. "I
have given them a detailed account
of whatever happened on Thursday. I
have also told police that he desperately
wanted to meet his son, Ishan, but

unfortunately, it did not happen," said

Kidwai.
"As Khalid Kidwai was with Om
Puri since afternoon to hours
before his death, we recorded his
statement. We will corroborate this
piece of information with Nandita's
statement. Only then can we make any
conclusion," said a senior police officer
of Oshiwara Police Station.
Sources close to Om Puri have also
added that the actor was planning to
shift his base of operation to US so that
Ishan could get better treatment. Puri
was consulting with a few people in US
and India for buying a house abroad.
"Om Puri wanted to provide better
treatment to Ishan. He had also
consulted some doctors and was
serious about it," said a source close to
the actor. Police had registered a case
of accidental death after post-mortem
report of Om Puri revealed that his
death was not natural. When police
arrived at Om Puri's residence on
Friday, he was found lying on the floor
with a sharp injury on his head.
"We suspect that Puri died of heartattack, however, it will be confirmed
after viscera report. After suffering the
cardiac arrest, he might have fallen
causing the injury on his forehead. He
was alone at home and there was no sign
of forced entry. At this stage, we have
ruled out possibility of any foul play,"
said a senior officer of Mumbai Police.
The veteran actor, who delivered
riveting performances in more than
100 films, passed away last Friday
morning. He was 66 years old and a
Padma Shri recipient.

Parents Charged With Murder After Missing Five-Year-Old

THE parents of a five-year-old girl who

was found dead inside their restaurant
after she was reported missing have
been charged in her murder.
Ashley Zhaos body was found at
Angs Asian Cuisine in North Canton,
Ohio.
Police believe Mingming Chen,
Ashleys mother, repeatedly punched
her daughter in the head, before Liang
J. Zhao found his daughter on the
ground, according to ABC5.
Her body was found inside the
restaurant deceased and concealed.
CBS reports her parents told police
Ashley went to lay down in the back
of the restaurant in the afternoon. Her
mother said when she went to check on
her in the evening, the child was gone.
Police initially said they believed she
had wandered out of the eaterys back

A man has been jailed for 22 years for

stealing a television remote.
Eric Bramwell stole the remote
from the shared common area at his
apartment complex in Wheaton, in the
DuPage County in Illinois.
According to the Chicago Tribune, the
stolen television remote was the last
straw as Bramwell was known as a
serial thief.
The 35-year-old was found guilty
in November after his DNA was
found on a glove that was dropped
in the apartment after the theft of the
universal television remote, which was
stolen in August 2015.
The Chicago Tribune reports it is

alleged Bramwell stole other remotes

and televisions in apartment blocks
around the DuPage County.
"Mr Bramwell's illegal activity and
his history have finally caught up with
him," state attorney Robert Berlin told
the Tribune.
"Regardless of what was stolen, Mr
Bramwell repeatedly thumbed his nose
at the law. He took what he wanted
time and time again and expected to
avoid the consequences. That's not
how it works, as Mr Bramwell found
out."
He was sentenced to jail on January
4 and will be eligible for parole after
serving half his sentence.

Family Booted From Bali Jetstar Flight But

Airline Defends Decision

FURIOUS social media users are

lashing out at Jetstar after a family
was kicked off a flight from Bali to
Adelaide but the airline is standing
by its decision.
In a video posted to Facebook by
Vincent Bamforth who was on flight
JQ128 on January 10, the family can be
seen packing up their belongings while
two Jetstar crew members watch on.
The family is then seen being escorted
off the flight.
Jetstar has stood by its decision to
remove the family from the flight,
saying they refused to take their
allocated seats.
We had customers board a flight
from Bali to Adelaide overnight who
had taken other passengers seats and
refused to move to their allocated
seats, a Jetstar spokesperson told

News Corp Australia.

The passengers refused to follow
numerous requests from our crew so
the captain decided that they would not
travel on that flight.
Like all airlines, our customers are
allocated specific seats and we cant
have a situation where passengers
sit wherever they like. This causes
disruptions to other customers and
delays the flight departing.
The spokesperson said the family was
rebooked to travel on a later service.
Passengers must be seated in their own
allocated seats according to the flight
manifest for take-off and landing, the
spokesperson said.
But Elena Della Foresta Scamoni, who
said she was on that flight, commented
on the Facebook video to say the crew
overreacted.

say they just questioned why the
seats were the way they were and
they couldnt sit alongside their
family, she wrote.
The young flight attendant overreacted
no one was rude to her they merely
discussed this between each other and

fault no one was blaming her, Jetstar
didnt even let the 2 families explain
the story, the families were shocked the
attendant was upset.
To kick two families off with young
children was disgusting and completely
unnecessary they were no way abusive
or rude, Jetstar should be ashamed of
themselves for doing such a thing to
families with young children it was

completely out of line ... if the air

hostess cant handle being questioned
then shes in the wrong industry she
ruined everyones flight delaying us all
for no reason ... my son actually cried
he wanted to sleep but said he was
scared the lady (flight attendant) might

The dad in the video, who requested not
to be named, said the Jetstar statement
was false.
No members of my family or the
other family which were removed from
the flight acted inappropriately, rudely
or offensively towards any Jetstar staff
or other passengers. There was nothing
which warranted any passenger being
removed from the flight and the
inconvenience to two families with
young children was significant, he

Fake Gold Being Peddled By Fraudsters,

Warn City Police

Counterfeit gold bars being sold by

fraudsters are fooling merchants and
Kijiji buyers alike, warn city police.
If I didnt tell you any different, you
would think that its real, Const.
Robert Wellon of the Edmonton Police
Service criminal investigation section,
northwest division, said Monday.
After similar fraudulent gold began
cropping up in Winnipeg, Edmonton
police began a search for it in stores
here. In late 2016, they received
information regarding the sale of
counterfeit gold bars to various
merchants in Edmonton. It was quickly
determined the gold bars which
appear to be professionally packaged
were indeed fake.
The bars themselves are small
between 10 and 31 grams but the
markup has not been. A 10-gram bar,
which is made from about a dollars
worth of copper and some gold plating,
has been sold for upwards of $300.
The larger ones have gone for closer to
$800.
The weights of the fakes are very close
to the real thing and buyers figured they

were getting a deal because that same

weight in gold would fetch almost
$400 to $1,000 respectively. To avoid
suspicion, the bars are packaged in
plastic so buyers cant get them tested
without opening them.

Toilet Fines Part Of Push To End India's

Outdoor Defecation Habit
In a bid to solve some of India's worst
health problems, one village in the
country's north are being fined caught
defecating outside.
Poor sanitation is blamed for persistent

Aria Sabit And His 'Butchery'

A doctor who performed unnecessary

spinal surgeries in California before
moving to Michigan to commit the same
scheme was sentenced on Monday to
nearly 20 years in prison after former
patients tearfully described how their
lives have been ravaged by pain and
ceaseless complications.
Some ex-patients wore braces or leaned
on canes as they spoke to the judge.
One woman was in a wheelchair. All
had a common story: They sought
relief from Dr Aria Sabit but instead
got a permanent dose of suffering.
Sabit, who pleaded guilty to conspiracy
and fraud, had a financial stake in Apex
Medical Technologies LLC and made
money when he used its spinal devices.
He worked at Community Memorial
Hospital in Ventura, California, until
moving to suburban Detroit in 2011.
US District Judge Paul Borman said
Sabit committed "cruel and unusual
punishment" and "horrific criminal
acts".
Sabit, 43, acknowledged that he was
responsible for his patients' awful care.
He quietly told victims that he was
sorry after they spoke and walked past
his seat in court, but that just stirred up
anger.
"I'm going to throw up," Angela Martin
of suburban Detroit told a reporter. She
spoke in court on behalf of a daughter

who was 21 when she saw Sabit after

a car crash and got a "butchery job" by
the surgeon.
Indeed, prosecutors also referred to
Sabit's work as "plain butchery" as they
explained how he sought vulnerable
patients with lower back pain.
"Sabit lied to his patients and convinced
them to undergo invasive fusion
surgery with instrumentation, knowing
he would not perform a fusion or place
instrumentation in the spinal column,"
the government said in a court filing.
The victims even included an executive

Porterfield said Sabit was considered a
"golden boy" at the hospital who had
warned him that he might not walk if
he didn't have emergency spinal fusion
surgery.
Porterfield said he couldn't walk after
the nine-hour surgery and was sent to a
rehabilitation center. After five weeks,
he finally went home in a wheelchair.
Porterfield, now 66, is back on his feet
but takes multiple pain medications
and can't fish, golf or teach his
grandchildren how to hit a baseball.
"I have to have pedicures because I
can't reach my feet," Porterfield told
the judge.

complications from Sabit's surgery.
