Introduction
This group project is designed to be carried out by a group of four students (maximum) in
each group. The project is to be undertaken by students of Quantity Surveying &
Construction Management specialisation to provide adequate ability to analyse and design
simple structures in civil engineering work. Students are exposed to the concepts, principles,
tools and techniques of analysis and design of the structure. This will also provide an
opportunity for the students to obtain comprehensive understanding of structural stability and
behaviour under different loading conditions. By completing the project work, students will
gain a clear understanding of carrying out simplified design procedures for a range of
structural elements in different materials
Page 2 of 15
Assignment task
In this group project, the students are required to design the critical structural elements of a
Shop Building with a veranda attached to it. The Shop Building is supported on a group of
concrete columns which are provided on the periphery of the building resting on pad footings
in the foundation. A continuous concrete beam is provided at 3.30 m above ground level all
around the building to avoid buckling and provide strength and stability for the structure.
Steel Trusses and aluminium sheets are used for roofing of the main structure and the veranda
is provided with a concrete slab. The Steel Roof trusses are resting on the top of the pair of
columns which are placed symmetrically on opposite sides. The trusses are axially loaded on
the top of the concrete columns and are secured in position by base plate anchor bolts. The
trusses are connected on the top by channel sections to act as purlins to hold aluminiumroofing sheets. Cement mortar blocks, doors, windows and ventilators are provided along the
periphery of the building to control access. The plan of the Shop Building, sections and the
placement of the Steel Truss are shown in figures 1 to 5.
Project Details
The dimension of the shop building is 10.8 m long and 5.0 m wide (Figure 1)
The Shop Building is constructed using twelve reinforced concrete columns as shown
in figure 1.
A veranda is provided in front of the shop building with dimensions 10.8 m X 1.80 m.
The total height of the Shop Building is 5.1 m at the top end of the column and the
height of the lower side of the slab at the veranda is 3.30 m
A reinforced concrete beam is provided at 3.0 m level along the periphery of the
reinforced concrete column from the ground level ( Refer Fig 3)
The Shop Building is provided with truss and aluminium sheets and the veranda is
provided with a concrete slab.

The students are required to consider Aluminium roofing sheet sizes which are
commercially available in Oman and purlins are to be spaced according to the
commercial sizes of the aluminium sheets
B. Draw the Shear Force and Bending Moment Diagram for the beam for the longest
span (Refer figure 3) assuming it as simply supported with uniformly distributed load.
(udl)
C. Analyse the critical members of the roof truss using method of Joints and design the
truss.
D. Design the concrete roof slab for the veranda giving all the relevant details of
calculations and dimensions. Sketch the reinforcement details of slab in plan and
section indicating the size and reinforcement spacing.
E. Design the reinforced concrete beam (Refer figure 3) for the maximum span giving all
relevant details. Sketch plan and section giving spacing and reinforcement details.
F. Design the reinforced concrete column for section C6 giving all the relevant details of
calculations and dimensions. Sketch the reinforcement details indicating the spacing
of the stirrups and dimensions of the reinforcement.
G. Calculate the Bearing Capacity of the soil using Terzaghis Bearing Capacity
Theory

unit weight of soil = 19.12 kN/m , Factor of safety 2.5 and Df the depth of soil
soil strata is 1.5m)
H. Design the dimensions of pad footings for column C 6
I. Draw the schematic arrangement of beam and column connections.

Late Submission
Penalty for late submission - 5% of the obtained marks for the assessment will
be deducted for each working day.
Assessment documents submitted beyond a period of five working days after
the last date of submission will not be accepted and will be marked as zero for
that assessment.
Plagiarism Policy
For policies or any other related information to Plagiarism please refer to the
Student Guide/Handbook page no 38-40.
As per MEC policy, any form of violation of academic integrity will invite
severe penalty. Plagiarized documents, in part or in whole, submitted by the
students will be subject to this policy.

of study (either in the same module, same semester or in any other semester),
the student will directly be awarded zero for the work in which plagiarism is
detected. In such cases, the student will not be allowed to re-submit the work.
C. Guidelines
The total amount of similar material in any form of student work from all
sources put together should not exceed 30% (including direct quotations).
The total amount of quoted material (direct quotations) in any form of student
work from all sources put together should not exceed 10%.
The total amount of similar material in any form of student work from a single
source should not exceed 7 percent. However, cases having a similarity of less
Page 12 of 15
than 7 percent in such cases may still be investigated by the faculty depending
on the seriousness of the case.
If faculty member find enough merit in the case of a student work with a
similarity (with a single source) of more than 7 percent as not a case of
plagiarism, the faculty member should provide detailed comments/remarks to
justify the case.
