FAST FACTS FOR BASIC

LIFE SUPPORT (BLS)

TRAINING (ADULT & PAEDS)
Who needs to do the training?
Yearly BLS training is now a core training requirement for all clinical staff who come into direct contact with adult, paediatric or neonatal patients in
our hospital and/or community settings. It is a requirement of National Standard 9: Recognising & Responding to Clinical Deterioration in Acute
Health Care. BLS training applies to:

Allied Health Professionals

Doctors

Dentists

Midwives

Mental Health Nurses

Nurses

Pharmacists (those that do home visits only)

Psychologists

Radiographers

Where does the training take place?

New graduates are expected to read the attached operational guidelines for adult BLS prior to the workshop offered at the interprofessional
orientation. For staff who stay on at Monash Health after their graduate/intern year, the training is offered in two parts:

An online learning package (via Monash Health Learning see below)

A practical training session (Adult BLS is held at all main sites of Monash Health, RESUS4KIDS - at MMC, Dandenong and Casey)

Do I need to complete paediatric BLS too?

This depends upon your clinical rotations for the year. Some graduates will be expected to complete paediatric BLS; you will be informed upon
commencement if it applies to you.
