Course Background:
This course intends to make the students fluent in terms of medical language, that will help them
improve their communication skills as well. How to talk and respond to children or aged people, how
to handle emergency situations, how to take care of a patient etc. will be taught to the students.
Working in Malaysia and Saudi Arabia is very challenging. This course will motivate them to
communicate in English and of course getting out of their shyness. This is a two months course, three
classes every week. Each classes will cover different topics of medical-involved conversations.
Different methods will be introduced every class. Assessment of the students will be done through
class tests, two monthly final exams and a bit of role-playing.

Course Aims:

Make the students fluent in English


Be aware of the basic problems of the patients
Able to speak about medicines
Able to give proper prescriptions
Be able to analyze any kind of medical report
Be able to guess the problem of the patient instantly
Know when to act immediately
Show directions to people
Co-operate with the patients

Course Textbook: High Scholl English Grammar and composition by Wren and Martin.

Class materials and methods:


Hard copies of those will be provided to the students. The lecture will be explained to the students. All
sorts of questions will be answered using easy language. All the students will be monitored based on
their communication skills. At the end of every class the students will be asked to explain what they
learned today. There will be a quiz after every three classes.
Two class tests of 20 marks will be held every month, out of which the best one will be counted with
the term exam grades. Class test time will be announced 7 days ahead.
Class attendance has 10 marks. Late attendance will not be accepted. For any valid reasons of
absence, an email explaining the reason of absence is expected.

Homework & Tasks:


Homework will be given daily. These homeworks will be counted as class performance test besides
being active in the class. The students will be asked to role-play so that new conversations can be
made up and the students will understand how to handle these situations. There will be no make up for
missing these tasks and homeworks. Each student has to present a ten minute talk on a weekly
reading.

Assessment: 2 quiz, each 20 marks.

Class room conduct policy:


Students are expected to attend the classes daily.
Use of mobile phone is prohibited in the class.
Incivility and disruptive behaviour will not be accepted.
No BONUS marks.
Quizzes have to be attended in time.
Late comers will not be given attendance.
Students are expected to complete all their home tasks.
Besides consultation hours, students can contact the faculty via email.
