Energy
! Energy can be moved from place to place. We say that the energy is
transferred.
! Energy transfers can be shown using energy transfer diagrams.
! Energy carried by electricity is called electrical energy.
! Loud sounds transfer a lot of energy. Loud sounds can damage your hearing.
! The larger the amplitude of a vibration, the louder the sound.
! The larger the frequency of a vibration, the higher the pitch of the sound.
! Some people can hear higher-pitched sounds than others.
1.8 Energy trails:
Changing State
! Solids are hard and have a fixed shape and fixed volume.
! Liquids have a fixed volume. They are runny and can be poured.
! Gases do not have a fixed shape or fixed volume. They take the shape of
their container. They can be squashed easily.
! Particles move faster when they are heated. They slow down when they are
cooled.
! A solid melts because the particles move away from each other.
! A liquid evaporates because the particles move around on their own.
! These changes are called changes of state.
2.5 Dissolving:
! We can sort living things into groups with similar features. This is called
classification.
! Vertebrates are animals with a backbone.
! Invertebrates are animals without a backbone.
Burning
! The part of the air needed for burning is called oxygen. Oxygen is also
needed for life.
! Flammable materials burn more easily than others.
! Fires need fuel, oxygen and heat to burn.
4.3 Burning changes:
! Fuels store energy. Energy is released when fuels burn. There are many
different fuels.
! The body uses food as fuel.
! We measure energy in joules, J.
Electricity
! You can connect lamps in series and in parallel. Parallel circuits have more
than one loop.
! Lamps in parallel are brighter than the same amount of lamps in series, using
the same battery.
! In series circuit: - the current is the same at all points.
- The voltage is shared between the lamps.
! In a parallel circuit: - The current is shared between the loops.
- The voltage is the same across the battery and each
lamp.
5.7 Magnets:
Plant Power
6.3 Photosynthesis;
Metals
7.7 Rusting:
7.8 Compounds:
! A compound is a substance with more than one type of atom joined together.
! A pure substance contains only one element or compound.
! A molecule is a group of atoms joined together.
Forces
! Gravity is the force that pulls everything towards the centre of the Earth.
! Weight is the force of gravity on an object. Weight is a force, measured in
Newtons, N.
! Mass is a measure of how much matter an object is made of. Mass is
measured in kilograms, kg.
8.3 Friction:
! Friction is a force that is exerted when things rub against each other.
! Air resistance is a form of friction.
! We can reduce or increase friction.
! Unbalanced forces can act on an object that is not moving. The objects start
to move in the direction of the bigger force.
! Unbalanced forces can act on a moving object. If the bigger force is in the
same direction as the movement, then the object moves faster. If the bigger
force is in the opposite direction to the movement, then the object moves
slower.
! If two forces are the same size and pull in opposite directions they are called
balanced forces.
! The reaction force stops something falling through a solid object. The
reaction force balances the weight.
! When an object floats, the forces of weight and up thrust are equal.
8.6 Speed:
Life Story
! Sperm are made in the testes. They pass down the sperm tube and out of
the penis.
! Eggs are made in the ovaries. They pass down the oviduct to the uterus.
