Whenaloadisappliedtosoil,itiscarriedbythewaterintheporesaswellasthesolidgrains.Theincreasein
pressurewithintheporewatercausesdrainage(flowoutofthesoil),andtheloadistransferredtothesolid
grains.Therateofdrainagedependsonthepermeabilityofthesoil.Thestrengthandcompressibilityofthesoil
dependonthestresseswithinthesolidgranularfabric.Thesearecalledeffectivestresses.

Theadjective'effective'isparticularlyapt,becauseitiseffectivestress
