Whenaloadisappliedtosoil,itiscarriedbythewaterintheporesaswellasthesolidgrains.Theincreasein
pressurewithintheporewatercausesdrainage(flowoutofthesoil),andtheloadistransferredtothesolid
grains.Therateofdrainagedependsonthepermeabilityofthesoil.Thestrengthandcompressibilityofthesoil
dependonthestresseswithinthesolidgranularfabric.Thesearecalledeffectivestresses.

proposetherelationshipforeffectivestress(in1936):

distortionandachangeofshearingresistancearedueexclusively
tochangesineffectivestress.Theeffectivestressisrelatedto
totalstressandporepressureby=u.
Theadjective'effective'isparticularlyapt,becauseitiseffectivestress
thatiseffectiveincausingimportantchanges:changesinstrength,changesinvolume,changesinshape.Itdoes

beginstodropasdrainageoccurs.

Therateofchangeofeffectivestressunderaloadedfoundation,onceitisconstructed,willbethesameasthe
rateofchangeofporepressure,andthisiscontrolledbythepermeabilityofthesoil.
Settlementoccursasthevolume(andthereforethickness)ofthesoillayerschange.Thus,settlementoccurs
rapidlyincoarsesoilswithhighpermeabilitiesandslowlyinfinesoilswithlowpermeabilities.
