Siddhartha: "The Brahmin's Son" (1-9)

Research and define the following terms (some are Buddhist terms, some
are people/objects, and some are regular vocabulary words).
Brahmin- A socially or culturally superior person.
Om- A mystic syllable, known as the most sacred mantra.
Art of contemplation & meditation Meditation is used to concentrate on
peace and bliss, while contemplation is used for reflection of ones self.
Atman- The spiritual life principle of the universe.
Avaricious- The display of extreme greed.
All-Radiant- Emitting light or heat.
Atonement Fixing for a wrong committed
Emanating- (of something abstract but perceptible) issue or spread out from (a source)
Rig-Veda- the oldest and principal of the Vedas, a collection of 1028 hymns composed in the 2nd
millennium bc in early Sanskrit.
Discontent - lack of contentment; dissatisfaction with one's circumstances.
Suffice - be enough or adequate.
Ablutions- the act of washing oneself
Supplication - the action of asking or begging for something earnestly or humbly.
Prajapati - a group Hindu deity presiding over procreation, and protector of life.
Transient - lasting only for a short time.
Upanishads of Sama-Veda - any of a class of speculative prose treatises composed between the
8th and 6th centuries b.c. and first written a.d. c1300: they represent a philosophical development beyond
the Vedas, having as their principal message the unity of Brahman and Atman .
Sages- a profoundly wise man
Insatiable - impossible to satisfy
Discourses- written or spoken communication or debate
Chandogya-Upanishads- a Sanskrit text that has served as a core text for the Vedanta school of
Hinduism. The name is derived from the Sanskrit, chanda, meaning poetic meter, and Upanishad,
meaning sitting at the foot of.
Satya - Sanskrit word for truth. It also refers to a virtue in Indian religions, referring to being truthful in
one's thought, speech and action. In Yoga, Satya is one of five Yamas, the virtuous restraint from
falsehood and distortion of reality in one's expressions and actions
Banyan tree- an Indian fig tree whose branches produce aerial roots that later become accessory
trunks. A mature tree may cover several acres in this manner.
Samanas - is a Sanskrit word referring to jasmine, a species of jasmine from the Oleaceae
family of flowering plants.
Ascetics- a person who practices severe self-discipline and abstention.
Undeviating - showing no deviation; constant and steady.
Resignation - an act of retiring or giving up a position.
Bast (mat made of)- fibrous material from the phloem of a plant, used as fiber in matting, cord, etc
Disillusionment - a feeling of disappointment resulting from the discovery that something is not as
good as one believed it to be.
Benumbed- deprive of physical or emotional feeling
Pilgrim- person who journeys to a sacred place for religious reasons
