GE Oil & Gas

Antisurge Valves for LNG Market

Advanced technology for maximum safety and reliability
in extreme compressor operations
Large valves for specific LNG applications
GE Oil & Gas is a recognized technology leader in the development of complex, large turbocompression machinery
and auxiliaries for LNG applications. Not only do we design and manufacture powerful compression trains, but we also
offer a high level of customization for all types of equipment to ensure perfect integration with existing facilities.
Our technological versatility, breadth of experience and single-source approach gives our customers the significant
advantage of a one-stop solution. Our integrated solutions consisting of core turbomachinery and auxiliary
equipment such as control valves allow performance and reliability to be optimized under
every operating condition.
LNG control valves are generally designed for low pressure drops and high flow rates, and
hence, high flow coefficients and large valve size (>24). They are equipped with a low-noise
device (VECO trim) that reduces noise and vibrations by reducing the velocity of the fluid.
This is key to preventing rapid deterioration of the trims as well as erosion of the valve bodies,
bonnets and piping. For large size valves, two different body configurations can be provided:
Angle type and In-Line type. The former minimizes the weight and cost of the body while the
latter represents the best solution for keeping the piping layout and associated costs under
control. To respond to emergency conditions, these antisurge valves open within a 0.5 to 1
second range, guaranteeing steady and smooth operation. GE Oil & Gas antisurge valves
are designed for severe operating conditions such as pressures up to 10,000 psi in combination
with sour and acid gas with high H2S concentration.

GENERAL SPECIFICATIONS

GE Oil & Gas has manufactured antisurge valves since 1968, and has continuously
improved the underlying technology. Designed for centrifugal compressor
applications, our antisurge valves have been tested extensively with our
compressor line.

An exclusive design to limit kinetic energy in the trim

In order to decrease noise and erosion in control valves, it is necessary to turn part
of the fluids inlet pressure energy into a non-kinetic form
such as thermal energy.
This can be achieved by increasing the friction all along the
flow path. The fluid is forced through a winding path whose
length can be extended if necessary so that the total
pressure drop is evenly distributed and greater greater
than attainable just by single-stage throttling.
GE Oil & Gas VECO trim consists of a labyrinth multistage
trim made in the shape of a co-axial cylinder assembly
with a sliding piston plug that opens during its travel.
The fluid fillets coming out of each cylinder are deviated
by the cylinder walls and, in colliding, dissipate part of
their kinetic energy. This process is repeated on every
cylinder and hence the pressure is continuously
decreased until the downstream pressure is reached.
The flow sections increase in size as they approach the
outlet so that the gas can gradually expand without
increasing velocity.

compliance with ISO 60534-8-3

A solution fully integrated with the compressor system

In the past, anti-surge valves were only opened in an emergency condition.
This resulted in continuous stops and loss of productivity.
Today, antisurge valves are an integral part of the compressor system.
During normal activity, this arrangement ensures steady operating conditions
for every occurrence, without loss of production time. To guarantee this
performance, the response of the valve is validated by dynamic tests during
the production and tuning phases. For this purpose, a variety of checks have
been incorporated into the GE Oil & Gas production system, assuring an
effective set of valve parameters. Calibration of the valve response leads to:
minimizing overshoots during step changes
reduction of stroke time during normal control
improved response to wavy signals
