Eg. My parents allow me to go out on Saturday nights.
I am allowed to go out on Saturday nights. (pasiva)
My parents let me go out on Saturday nights.
If anything: forma elptica de if they want to pay anything (si quieren pagar algo).
RELATIVES
A- DEFINING - NON DEFINING RELATIVE CLAUSES.
A-1: Defining:
is Sergei Bubka.
A-2: Non-defining:
a) No son esenciales para la comprensin de la frase; slo aaden
informacin "extra" sobre el antecedente, pero no lo definen ni reducen su
referencia. Como lo que hacen es ofrecer una especie de explicacin sobre el
antecedente, en espaol se llaman "Explicativas".

died in 1977.

C- RELATIVE AS SUBJECT.
Si el RELATIVO es el SUJETO de su clusula (frase relativa), NUNCA
PODR SER OMITIDO, se trate de una frase defining o non-defining:

D- RELATIVE AS OBJECT.
1- Si el RELATIVO -sea cual sea- es el OBJETO de su clusula, podr ser
omitido o no, dependiendo de qu tipo de clusula se trate:

a) Con WHO: Si hay una preposicin en la clusula relativa, se colocar al
final de sta:

F- WHOSE.
Es el caso posesivo del relativo ingls. Se corresponde con el espaol cuyo
(a/os/as):

b) Type 2: Cuando el antecedente no es ni una persona ni una cosa, sino
that

b) THAT tambin sustituye a who o which DESPUS DE SUPERLATIVOS.
En este tipo de frases, adems, el mismo that suele ser omitido:
He is the nicest person (that) I have ever met.
This is the worst essay (that) I have ever read.
a) En general, para referirse a cosas, en las proposiciones especificativas
(las que no van entre comas, se prefiere that a which).
2- USE OF WH-WORDS AS RELATIVES:
En ingls podemos usar las WH-WORDS como relativos (adverbios de
relativo), cada uno usado en el mbito que corresponde a su significado:
i- WHERE, como ya hemos visto, se usa en contextos locativos y suele ir en
lugar de palabras como here o there:
That is the school. As a child I studied there > That is the school where I
studied as a child.
ii- WHEN se emplea en expresiones de tiempo y muchas veces ir con
palabras como year, month, week, day... Sin embargo, en estos
contextos, that ser ms frecuente que when.
I remember the day

He was the best. That's the reason why I married him.
A number of: una cantidad de, varios.
Parecer:
Look + adjetivo: parecer, estar (algo que es visible, que se puede ver). Eg He looked tired. (l
pareca / estaba cansado). No puede ir seguido de infinitivo. Tambin admite la construccin It
looks as if: parece que, parece como si.
Seem: parecer. El parecido no tiene por qu ser visible fsicamente. Puede ir seguido de
adjetivo, de infinitivo, de un sintagma nominal (seem o seem like) o de una proposicin
subordinada con that:
Eg It seems strange that he doesnt want our help.
She seems to be waiting for somebody.
What we did seemed (like) the best solution.
It seems to me that he has a slim chance (ligera oportunidad) of succeeding.
Interested in: interesado en, interesado por.
Right: derecho; derecha.
Even though: aunque, a pesar de que.
Value: valor.
Such a deal: un trato as, tal trato.
Record company: compaa discogrfica.
Reduce: reducir.
Keep-kept-kept: guardar; mantener.
Sales: ventas.
Entirely: enteramente.
Profits: beneficios (econmicos).
By + verb-ing: indica cmo se consigue algo. By no hace falta traducirlo. By selling podra
traducirse por vendiendo o al vender.
Old-fashioned: anticuado, pasado de moda.
Package: paquete.
At a much higher price: a un precio mucho ms alto. Para intensificar un comparativo, se
pueden usar much (como aqu) o far. Eg. At a far higher price.
Pricing plan: plan de precios.
Break: (aqu) ruptura; receso, descanso; romper, etc.
Standard: norma, patrn; estndar, habitual; the industry standard: la norma de la industria, lo
que es habitual en la industria.
Apiece (adv): cada uno.
Because of: a causa de, por.
Early: temprano, (aqu) la primera, la del principio.
Ready to: preparado por.
Less: menos. Comparativo de Little (poco): Little-less-the least.
Store: tienda (shop); almacen.
