Guided reading
Step 1: Before reading
Look at the cover. Read the title and point to the picture. Ask What are Dad and the children
looking at? Where are they? Can you read some of the words on the poster?
Point to the poster. Ask the children What event are they going to join? How long will the
event last?

Step 2: During reading


Talk about the pictures as you read. Draw the childrens attention to the different kinds of trees that
the characters plant. Try to compare the look of the trees with the children.

Show the children where the funny bone in the body is. Explain
to them why it is called a funny bone.
Ask the children the steps you take when you plant a tree.
Encourage them to share their own similar experiences with their
classmates.

Step 3: After reading


Close the book. Ask the children What do you think will happen to Floppys tree? Do you think it
will grow to be a tree or a bone? Do you think it is good to give trees? Why?
Open the e-book of this story and listen to the audio. Then use the mini-dictionary function to
look up target words with the children and look at the photos.
Open the Read aloud version of the story and play the audio. Encourage the children to look at the
photos and say the missing words.
Cover the words in the big storybook. Point to different people in the pictures and ask the
children to tell who or where they are, and what they are doing. Choose a few pages and ask the
children to retell the story in their own words. When necessary, offer help in the retelling by
suggesting possible words or sentences to use.
Look for photos of different kinds of trees mentioned in the
storybook (i.e., oak, willow, beech, chestnut and maple). Show the
children the photos and introduce them to the major features of
these trees.

Post-reading tasks
Task 1 Give a tree
Objectives Able to recognize the target words

Preparation Word cards (Photocopy master L2B9.1)
Wooden sticks
Brown play dough
Procedure Cut out the word cards and colour them green.
Fix a wooden stick to the back of each word card to make trees.
Put the trees on a table and put some brown play dough on the table as soil.
Say a word, e.g. bone. Invite a child to select a tree with the correct word on it.
The child should then plant the correct tree by putting it in the soil and say
the word, e.g. bone.
Say, e.g. Ada gives a tree with the word bone on it.
Assessment Plant all the trees. Say a word and ask a child to pretend to water the correct
tree. For more able children, ask them to describe their own actions, e.g. I water
a tree with the word bone on it.

Task 2 Plant some trees in the park


Objective Able to understand the target sentence structure ______ plant(s) ______
near ______.
Preparation A picture of a park (Photocopy master L2B9.2)
Some crayons
Procedure Enlarge the picture of a park and put it up on the board.
Say to the children, e.g. We plant a tree near the shed.
Ask a child to come out and draw a tree in the correct place.
When everyone has had a turn drawing a tree, guide the children to say
We plant some trees in the park.
Assessment Ask the children to draw trees freely in the picture on the board and say where
they plant their trees, e.g. I plant a tree near the pond.

Extension activities
Activity 1 Lets make a funny tree
Preparation A big piece of drawing paper
Old magazines
Scissors
Glue
Procedure Draw a tree trunk on a big piece of drawing paper and put it up on the board.
Give each child a pair of scissors, some glue and a few pieces of magazine
paper.
Ask the children to cut some leaves in funny shapes out of the magazine
paper.
Guide the children to stick the funny leaves on the drawing paper.
When the children have finished, ask them to point to the tree and say
A funny tree!

Activity 2 We are drops of water


Preparation Photos from the Internet or magazines
(a pond and a stream)
Procedure Explain to the children that a pond is an area of still water and a stream is a
flow of water. Use photos of a pond and a stream if necessary.
Tell the children Lets imagine that we are all drops of water. We stay still in a
pond and we move in a stream.
Say to the children, e.g. We are in a pond/stream.
The children should stand still when they hear We are in a pond. and move
around the room when they hear We are in a stream.
Invite the children to take turns to give the instructions.
