The Department of Public Enstruction, Bombay. THE VIKRAMORVASIVAM ADRAMA IN FIVE ACTS Br KALIDASA EDITED WITH ENGLISH NOTES. BY SHANHAR P. PANDIT, M.A., Registered under Act XXV. of 1867. — Bombay: GOVERNMENT CENTRAL BOOK-DEPOT. 1879. - (Ail rights reserved.) Price Rs, two, CRITICAL NOTICE. In preparing the present edition of the Vikramorvas'iyam the following Mss. have been used. G. Thisis written in Devandgart characters, Tt is anoldMs. Thongh the date is not given, it appears from the form of the letters and the nature and state of the Paper to be about two hundred or two hundred and fifty years old, possibly older. o far as it goes it is very correct, Except the first ten or twelve pages, it does not appear to have been corrected by any one. It contains no chhaya or Sanskrit translation of the Prakrit passages, oxcopt of the portion which is contained in the first twelve Pages, where one is sometimes givon in the margin. ‘The total number of loaves is 41. The colophon is: 97 fRaSate arte Gaaiia: |) aarny Paatsd ae ee We UL Par dt eo art el at HA | seg eee ey Almost all the Matrés or signs of and i precede the consonants which thoso vowels follow, instead of being written over them as in modern Mss. The whole Ms. is in a perfect state of Preservation. It hag 1L or 12 lines on each side, and each line contains about 24 letters. As at the time got this Ms. T thought it, as it was, the oldest of the Mss. I had, T took it. as my guide and copie from it the text of this edition, and with the copy I collated (25) the other Mss. in my possession. The Ms. G. belongs to one “Mr. Jos’t of Sattara, from whom it was procured for me by my friond Mr. Vinayak Trimbak Golé of Khandesh, and has been yeturned to its owner through the latter gentleman. WW. is a fino modern Ms. also in Devanigart characters. Té comes from Nasik, copied by and belonging to Govind S’astet Nirantara. The date of its genesi which will follow presently. Tb contains no chhaya. ‘he num= is given in its colophon er of leaves is 28. ‘The number of lines on each page is about 11, each line containing about 42 letters. ‘There are mar- ginal notes now and then and the Ms. appears to have been considerably used to rend from. Now and thon quotations are given in the margin from the Sdhitya Darpana and the Saras~ eattkanthabharant, The whole Ms. is perfectly legible and very correctly written. ‘Tho colophon already referred to is as follows: aaraacaTa arisataet apdtaacae || qourardat atk waaie ot | aera Pray TTA atk fotad Wt st aaah Pata Tet IL HRMAATATTIRACTANSU TH: AIT |I 3a amacoada frat a erat aha Matenayt sient? areal TACT aa || eRagea ast qaalrs7gee (sic) AUGACTAAT AAT alat pA 74 |] XL This Ms. is doubtless a copy of Nz des- cribed below. And it isa most faithful copy. Tt appears that after N. was copied from Nz both were corrected separately. Tn many places the inaccuracies of No are faithfully reproduced in N. We is, as said above, also from Nasils and belongs to a S‘Astri whose namo is Ekanttha S’Astri. It consists of 19 leaves hay- ing each 13 or 14 lines, each line containing about 46 letters. (Tis Ms. is very closely written, thong perfectly legible. Tt contains no chhiya, but the Pralcrit passages 4s well as the Sanskrit ones are very correctly written. ‘The date is not given. The colophon runs thus: SHIA (Raa || The Ms. may (3) he from fifty to seventy-five years old. hore are few margi- nal glosses as in N. or quotations in tho margin, There are harvitdls corrections in the body of this as well as in that of N. Nv is very carefully written, and appears to have been very often read. On the first side of the first leaf of N. there is the following given in four lines one on each edge of the page: &¢ AzRIEI- HIER TT Aa | iim alee | aneatiata fermrgraaa | ai za am aaite mabe arr | Tere ORT apmehit | eat eft any tale Praia (2 WL te cart apr faied | RE q Teas a aa | Hek4 FS | ftcae wigs an: || The only difference between N, and Nz is that the formor is older, otherwise their value is just the same. Both N. and N.z were procured for me by my friend Mr. Hari Bhagavant Keskar B.A. late Master, Nasik High School, aud have now been returned to their re- spective owners, A. This belongs to my own collection of Mss. and is in De- vanigari characters. Number of leaves 24, or 48 sides, of which the Jast one and a half are blank. There are fifteen lines on each side, and about 55 letters in each line. Tt is a fine, but rather modern Ms. ‘Tho letters are beautiful and the whole Ms. is generally very correct, ‘The names of the speakers, the fignres of the stanzas, all the stage-directions and similar words and phrases not forming parts of the poot’s composition, are painted with the usual yellowish red substance called Geru, Bach Prakrit passage has its Sanskrit chlaya immediately fol. lowing it. The Ms. appears to have been corrected with havitdla and in some places even with ordinary black ink, and obviously has often been read. The date when it was copied is not given, but it may certainly be fifty or _soventy- five year old. The beginning is fa iara aq: face aq: and the colophon runs thus: zf Rasta fala ack ani wi ie Ul Ql As far as I romember the cir Ce) eumstances under which A came into my possesion, it belongs to the Deccan, Lhaving obtained it in Poona in the year 1871. B. This is in Devanigart characters and is a copy of a granthi Ms. obtained ftom Mysore through the Tate Rao Sabeb Narayan Jagannath Vaidya, Director of Public Instruction, My- sore, Both the granthi Ms. and its Devanigart copy, which latter was made for my use, are in my possession. The age of tho granthi Ms. is not ascertainable, but the samo appears to be very old, I have not used the grenthi original but only the Devanagari copy, which is generally very correct. It consists of 22 leaves of 10 or 11 lines to the page, each line containing abont 62 letters. The beginning is Il Franarranarran eat aed || aroTanietad || aacarsaracstart | & | wsmmrisatmeanaaegar- Soy ea FaaraMANTAMeTIgea TT TET HTT fraqaact |I | at [le Areaetary AH: Ul Falig aagtaqRd &o. &c. Pp, This is a Devanégart Ms. from Poona, obtained through Krishna S/Astri Rajvade, of the office of the Government Trans- Jator to the Director of Public Instruction. It consists of 42 Jeaves of which the last and first sides are not written upon. There are eight lines on each side and about 49 letters in each line. It is generally correct, though not so correct as A or the Nasik Mss. N.Nz. The first thirteen Jeaves have been corrected by some one, probably by Mr, Rijvide, not always correctly. The age of the Ms. is not given but it may be one hundred years old, possibly much older. Each Prakrit speech has its chhiya given immediately after jt. In my opinion this Ms. (5) was copied from a Telegu Ms. Evidences of this are to be found in many places. Thus, for instance, the cipher is used to indicate the doubling of a letter, generally a consonant, in the Prakvit parts, as S404 for THA or FHS. ‘This cipher is Sometimes given as in ordinary Telegu Ms. over the letter pre- ceding, instead of between the letter to be doubled and its pre- ceding letter. There are also some special evidences, Thus, on the second side of leaf 13, line 8, the King’s speech runs thus : Arulywraet estcmarT, which is only a mistranslitera- tion of the correct passage in Telegu characters, in which (#7) and (@) can easily Le confounded. Again % is often misrepresented by fT which is easily accounted for when it is borne in mind how % and PT are similar to each other in Telegu. ‘The beginning is si¥aarq aa: | ARIAT de. and tho colophon: aan aierend fmdiatd aa ack ul wed a UL ved siatratcaiar: aeariot: Aaa at: Wl Azaeheas: || deraacerciaar: SITE RCHTNTCS ATHET GA: || U1 4 i leu U aexsmr- foraea 1) et War These six Mss. agree with one another in one essential point, via. that they all omit the Prakvit verses forming parts of the King’s long soliloquy in the fourth Act. But besides the six I have also used two more Mss. viz., K. Which is a very excellent Ms, written in Devanagart characters, professing to have been copied by ono Chintamani in Kas’, or Benares, It consists of very closely written 12 leaves having seventeen to twenty-one lines on each side with about 88 letters to the line, The Prokrit Passages havo no cbhaya. ‘There are corrections made in the Ms, with haritdla, and ved gery is frequently usedas in A. It appears to have been used, and is very correct. Tho date is not given but the Ms. may be about two hundred years old. ‘The beginning is the usual salu- Cay) tation to Ganapati 2771attt 44: 1 The colophon is: SAAT fmsidated ata TES oy TT L033. 4 fated Garacrat areat BUR YH (sic) a7Fat ahaa ll eg | wll ow Spinrad aa; || Faas at 3s. This Ms. was kindly lent to me by my friend Prof R. G- Bhandarkar of Bombay. U. This is avery good Ms. belonging to the late Madha- varima Sastrt of Ulptd in the Surat District now in the posses- sion of his son Krishnarima. It consists of 27 folios very correctly written and afterwards revised. ‘The length of the folios is 94 inches, and the breadth 4 inches, with about 14 lines of about 88 letters in each to a page. ‘The date given at the ond is 1732, but whether Saiivat or S’aka is uncertain, But it might well be the former as the Ms. certainly looks two hun- dred years old. U- Agrees most with G: though the latter does not contain the Prakeit passages in the King’s soliloquy in the fourth Act, agrees less with A. and lonst with N.N2., de. so far as tho differences go. It calls the play a Trotaka throughout. ‘hig Ms. has been returned to its owner with the letter U. maxked on the first page which I have also initialed and dated O6th April 1874, the day on which I returned tho Ms. to the owner. A faithful copy of it is now in my possession. Both KE. and U- contain the Prakvit verses and the stge- Ajrections relating to the dancing postures in the soliloquy of the King in the fourth Act, and therein differ from the rest of the Mss. Neither U: nor K. contains a chhty® of those Prakrit verses. Pesides the eight Mss. described above I have also used two other Mss. one containing the commentary of Katavema and the other that of Ranganitha, ‘The former is a copy in Telegu characters kindly obtained for me by Dr. A, Burnell C. 8., Judge of Tanjore, of a granthi Ms. existing in the Library of the Raja of Tanjore. This Ms, does not contain the whole of the text Cot.) but omits nearly all the Sanskrit prose and verse except such as Kafavema thinks requires explanation; it gives, however, all the Prakrit speeches with a Sanskrit chhaya, and explains nearly all the metrical Sanskvit portions which, thongh not quoted by him continuously, can easily be restored from his comments. ‘The Ms. is written on thirty-one leaves of modern foolscap paper with 23 lines to each page and about 22 letters to the line. It is probable the original of the granthi Ms, from which Mr, Burnell procured the copy must be a Devanagart Ms., thougl Katavema may have been a southerner.* Thus ut page 23 the Ms. has 4144 1 in 'Velegu letters for what onght to be * That this is most likely true is shown, first by the fact that Kita- vema calls his commentary FARMS Mmataeaenay; thug sft TaraTan ss AMRIT Aaa acaea Bata: Sg: and similarly af the end of each Act; where Kétayavena (nob Kita- vemm, observe) looks like a Dravidian name; and Kuméragiri is the name of a sacred hill near Bellari in the Dravidian country, whore many thousands of pilgrims flock annually even in those days, and Kalayavoma who calls himself a King might have been the king of that place, or so connected with a King thereof that he dedicated his commentary to him by calling it umdragirirdjiya ; 2ndly from a casual remark at page 13 where in explaining the passage S11 amid] ararerersai gsq- fafa FH OTT &e. the commentator observes sTHeIATT, ‘ the word SHH means yes,’ 51H or 311% being the regular and ordinary word for ‘yes’in Tamil to this day. The colophon containing a mutilated S'loka at tho end is as follows: 14 stareaimutaa garcia T malas data: || || aatamgantiataenen | waltarqas wat sreaqeta Aalt zerarw; dar: 447 1 Il aarttat aparal Gaal seaeay || adtacqaer eek aa aM {1 2 I sad Psediaadaai: pana canta: | masa HPT (sic ata att Aaa: I] St aa: aNetra cea af fiat waaI7 || | Cad afla G1; the T being a mistransliteration for %, those letters being very similar to each other in the Devanigart alphabet. At page 48, part of the King’s speech runs in Telegu charactor thus: aah Prafdaaleara Paritdrsfianta carcar:. This varear: js a mistransliteration for T#al: written TaIta: in old Devand- gart characters. At page 50 the word qi is misrepresented by 771T the second 4 in awd having been mistaken by the scribe for 4, and wrougly represented through the latter letter in Telegu characters, which would not have been the case if the original of the Ms. in question had been written in any of the Southern characters where 7 and H do not resemble each other. At page 54 the Ms. reads in Telegu srsangae TAAA_&c., where the 4 and 4 are clearly traceable to a mistake of Wand 4 in a Ms. in Devanigar- characters, where the letters ¥ and 4 being similar are often conf founded with each other, whereas in the Dravidian alphabets they are not so similar that the one may be mistaken for tho other. See also page 56 where fviaa is read for PRT (or faefiaa) which mistake is only possible on the theory that the Ms. comes from: a Deyanigarf original. These and a variety of other circumstances leave no reasonable ground for doubt that the original of the Ms. was copied from a Devandgari Ms. Tho Telegu Ms. is in my possession. The other commentary used is that of Ranganatha. This Ms. was kindly lent me by Dr. G. Bible, Educational Inspector, Northern Division, who had himself obtained a Joan of it from a widow at Benares. It is » carefully written Ms. which contains the full text of the play as well as copious comments by the commentator. But the explanations are often very ‘doubtful and in many places palpably wrong. Altogether the commentary is a very indifferent one, and considerably inferior to that of Kaétavema. It has been returned to Dr. Biller, who T believe lias restored it to its owner, afler taking a copy for the Government of Bombay. Ca) Varions readings from both the commentators have been given by me, but not so systematically as from those eight Mss. which I have carefully collated and which form the basis of this Edition. One remarkable feature of this Edition is that it omits from the main text the Prukrit verses and the directions relating to the recitation &o. thereof generally found in tho King's long soliloquy in the fourth Act of the play as it las been hitherto presented to the public. Ihave givon tho fourth Act with the Prakrit verse passages in an Appondix,*in which the passages and directions in question are included in brackets, 80 that tha parts excluded from the main text of the Edition may be easily distinguishable. My authority for omitting the Pralvit passages from the fourth Act is dorived from six} of the vory best Mss. out of tho eight collated, and from ono of the two commentators, KAfavema, who knows nothing of these Prakrit verses, dancing postures and the stage-divections referring to them. He comments on the fourth Act without the slightest indication that the passages were there. Itis his custom, as I have stated above, to give a full Sanskrit version of all Prakvit sentences whother theso occur in prose or verse. If therefore he liad known the Prakrit verses of tho fourth Act, Ne would certainly have given a chhaya or Sunskeit version of them if not occasionally further explanations besides. One objection to these passages is, independently of the external authority of Mss., that they aro in Prakrit and are most of them intended to be chanted or recited by the King, who, as an * The paging of the Appendix corresponds with that of the fourth Act in the body of the play, so that the matter on any given page in the Appendix is the samo as that on the corresponding page of the fourth Act plus the Prakrit verse or verses. + These are G.N.Ne. A. BP. The Mss, that give the passages are KX, and U. about which see above. C0 > - tullamapdtra, always speaks Sanskrit in the rest. of the play. ‘Another objection appears to ba that wherever they are in- tended to be chanted or spoken by the King they are mostly tautologieal, containing the substance of Sanskrit verses im- mediately preceding or following them, which is. @ very sus- picious circumstance against their genuineness. ‘Thus for ex- ample, stanza 8 (page 107A.) is merely a repetition in Pra- Kevit of stanzn 7} stanza 44 is a Prakvit repetition of stanza 45 (page 117A); stanza 49 is a mere tautology of the Sanskrit slazas 48 and 50 (page 118A.), and so forth. [A third objection seems to lio in the fact that-a grent many of the Prakrit versoa though claiming to be parts of the King’s soliloquy ave full of descriptions «nd vague allusions and re- ferences in the third person to some one in his situation rather tian to him distinctly. For example, seo stanzas 28, 62. AS yegards some others again, it is clear that they are not to be re- peated by the King, and yet it is not plain whose parts they form. Examples of such are stanzas 1 and 5. A fourth and perhaps the ‘strongest objection against the passages is that not only are none of them required in “their xespective places, but several of them appear to interrupt the free and natural flow of the sentiments as expressed in tlie Sanskrit passages ; i. ¢. not only would they not be missed were they not to ocour where they aro found, but their absence gives a better continued sense from the Sanskrit than is now the case when the latter is so often interrupted by. them. When I was in Madras in the hot season of 1874 I liad oconsion to sce the family Library of Rao Bahadur Raghunath Rao, the present Devan of Indore, and on examining a Devandgart Ms. of the play, which, I was informed, had been taken to that part of the country hy the ancestors of the family when they C1) migrated from the Decoan abont two hundred and fifty yenrs ago, I found that the fourth Act did not contain ‘the Prnksrit passages and the stage-directions under reference. Thave thought, I hope not incorrectly, that the above facts and considerations® are sufficient to account for expunging the passages from the main text of my Edition. Though I am not at present in a position to pronounce decidedly on the merits of tho passages, I may perhaps bo ullowed to risk a guess that it may be that the passages were intended to ba chanted by some ono behind the scene, and as such anonymous passages without any indications that they aré to be repeated behind the scone are not known to occur in the plays, our Passages may or may uot lave originally belonged to the play even though they be a production of the author. ‘The prints, voprints, and Editions of this play at present available have doubtless done good servieo in their days and in their own ways to the admirers of Kalidasa, by bring- ing to their notice and within their reach one of the best com- positions of that author; but it is no presumption, I bolieve, to say, though Ido so with great deference to the learning of my predecessors in the field, that most of thom contain texts that demanded further research and further elucidation and improvement based ou more careful collation of Mss. As for the translations, and anmotations that have hitherto been given in Buropo and Galoatta, « great many of them may very well * One year after the text of the present Edition had beén printed Dr. Richard Pischel published in the AMouthly Journal of the Royal Academy of Setences at Berlin (No. for October 1874) a recension of the Vikramorm vas'i according to Dravidian Mss, And though his sources are of course different from mine he too has had, on the anthority of his "Mes , to omit the Prakrit passages in tho soliloquy of the King in the fourth Act. This affords independent confirmation of the correctness of the principle on which Ihave omitted them in the text of the Edition. fe) be pardoned, first on the ground that they were given by foreigners and that too many years ago, and secondly on the prin- ciple that bad readings generally load to worse interpretations. Those that have lad to read the play in tho existing editions and reprints, and have felt the necessity of better editions and Detter commentaries, will easily find what help the present attempt is ablo to render them. I therefore say nothing re- garding its claims or its merits, but leave the work to speak for itself, though Iam fully conscions that the discovery of amore ancient and better, because moro reliable, Mss. will make further purification of the text possible.
