New Delhi: As pressure mounted

on Tej Bahadur Yadav over his video post criticising living conditions for soldiers at the border, the
BSF jawan remained defiant, claiming he had surpassed legendary
revolutionary Bhagat Singh in exposing corruption in the forces.

Rahul, Akhilesh
to begin SP-Cong
poll campaign
Swati.Mathur@timesgroup.com

Lucknow: The Congress-Samajwadi Party alliance may not have

been formally announced yet, but
both parties appeared on Tuesday
to be racing ahead with plans to
kickstart a joint election campaign
led by Gandhi siblings Rahul and
Priyanka, along with Akhilesh
and Dimple Yadav, later this week.
Confirming the development,
sources told TOI that the ongoing
Samajwadi family feud delayed
the announcement of the alliance
because Akhilesh insisted on clarity on whether he retains control of
the party and its poll symbol the
bicycle. The EC, in front of which a
petition submitted by both sides is
pending, is expected to hear them
out on January 13. P 7

Gandhinagar: The eighth edition of Vibrant Gujarat Global

Summit that kicked off on Tuesday saw global business leaders
extol Prime Minister Narendra
Modi for his Make In India drive
and digital push, some of whom
even saw him emerge as an international leader.
While inaugurating the summit, Modi banked on these campaigns to hard-sell India as the
most profitable destination and
assured corruption-free governance while addressing a 5,000strong audience and political
and business delegations from
around 100 countries. The number of partner countries for the
summit has increased from eight
in 2015 to 12 this time.
The business blitzkrieg is expected to witness over Rs 30 lakh
crore worth MoUs of investment
intentions to be inked. On Tuesday, it was only Adani group chairman Gautam Adani, who announced Rs 49,000 crore investment
over the next five years in ports,
edible oil and other infrastructure projects.
Reliance Industries Ltd chairman Mukesh Ambani said that
he plans to connect all schools,
colleges, traders and hospitals in
the state with 4G internet. Till
2014-15, only 35% of people in Gujarat had access to 3G internet.

Modis feverish pitch for investment comes at a time when
demonetization has left several
sectors bleeding and downward
growth projection in coming qu-

arters. While he drew applause

several times during his speech,
the biggest compliment came
from Peter Huntsman, president

you (Modi) would stay and take

Modi strongly harped on the
Make In India campaign which
he said has achieved global recognition and acceptance, so
much so that he does not need to
explain it to the business community now.

Notes scrapped on govt prod, RBI tells panel

TIMES NEWS NETWORK

New Delhi: The Reserve Bank

of India (RBI) has told a parliamentary panel that it recommended on November 8 the
scrapping of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000
notes after a prod from the government a day before.
The response is part of the
7-page note the central bank

has sent to Parliament's Standing Committee on Finance.

Stating that the Centre conveyed its advice on November 7,
the RBI told the panel: "The
Central Board of the Reserve
Bank met on 8 November, 2016.
The Board noted that a summary measure in the form of withdrawal of legal tender character of these high denomination

bank notes to contain the menace of counterfeit notes is proposed by the government. It was
observed that such a proposal
could not have come at a more
opportune time than coinciding with the introduction of
MG (New) series of notes, RBI
said in its reply to the panel.

Govts slow handling

of key cases riles SC
Dhananjay.Mahapatra@timesgroup.com

New Delhi: The Supreme Court expressed displeasure on Tuesday over

the Centre being too slow in handling
sensitive cases in the highest court and
also slammed it for seeking adjournment in almost every case.
There was a string of cases in the
morning session in which a bench of
Chief Justice J S Khehar and Justices N
V Ramana and D Y Chandrchud found
the Centre seeking more time, saying it
was unprepared. In fact, this has been
the trend in the apex court, where the
central agency under the law ministry
handles the distribution of cases
among the law officers.
Most of these officers get the files of
cases listed for hearing in the SC late in
the day, leaving them very little time to
prepare their arguments. Many a time,
the law officers remain unaware of filing of reply affidavits in a case, hindering their efforts to place the facts of the
case properly.
In fact, the government started on a
