Precast and Prestressed Concrete Structures
(CIVI 6011) Fall 2016
ASSIGNMENT NO.2
Due: Monday Oct 31, 2016
Question 1: (Loss of Prestress by the Simplified Method)
Given:
Simply supported beam span = 26 m. The cross section of the beam is
3000 X 1200 Single Tee with 75 mm composite topping (See CPCI manual for
section properties).
Superimposed dead load = 2.5 kN/m2
(No superimposed live load)
Material Properties:
Precast Concrete (Normal density):
fc = 40 MPa
fci = 25 MPa
Topping Concrete (Normal density):
fc = 25 MPa
Prestressed Reinforcement:
16 13 mm 1860 MPa
Strands depressed at mid-span:
ee = 425 mm
ec = 787 mm
Assumption:
Jacking tendon stresses = 0.75 fpu
Required:
Determine total prestress loss (fp) and effective prestress (Pe) by the Simplified
Method.

Question 2: (Determination of Bonded Prestressed Reinforcement Amount)

Given:
400 X 625 rectangular beam certified in accordance with A23.4

Applied moment Mf = 450 kN.m

625 mm

dp = 550 mm

400 mm

Material Properties:
Precast Concrete (Normal density):
fc = 40 MPa
Prestressed Reinforcement:
fpu = 1860 MPa; kp = 0.28 (low relaxation strand)
Required:
Find the amount of prestressed reinforcement.
