Engineering Workshop Instructions

The objective of the Workshop is learning. The experiments are designed to illustrate phenomena in different
areas of Workshop and to expose you to uses of instruments. Conduct the job with interest and an attitude of
learning.
Remember that Accidents do not occur, they are caused. With this in mind, strictly follow the general safety
rules given below and safe practices indicated in brief.

1. SAFETY first, works next.

2. Know your job and follow instructions.
3. NEVER HURRY, work deliberately and carefully.
4. Keep the area around the machine CLEAN.
5. Because of emergency evacuation, always clear the passage used for entering or leaving the workshop.
6. You need to come well prepared for the job along with safety gears.
7. Proper knowledge of warning signs is compulsory in workshop.
8. Do not handle, store or consume food or drink in the workshop.
9. Keep away from revolving machine, loose clothe might get struck and serious injuries could be caused.
10. Main supply connection should be connected at the last, with proper guidance from LAB INCHARGE.
11. One person only should operate the machine control.
12. Work quietly and carefully (the whole purpose of experimentation is to make reliable
measurements!) and equally share the work with your partners.
13. Do not fiddle idly with apparatus. Handle instruments with care. Report any breakage to the Instructor.
Return all the equipment you have signed out for the purpose of your experiment.
14. While working keep your mind & eyes on the job & do not indulge in talking.
15. Use tools correctly and do not use them if they are not in proper working condition.
16. Never (a) operate a machine unless you are authorized to do so. (b) Start a machine unless you know how
to stop it. (c) Walk away and leave a machine running. (d) Distract or interfere with any one, operating
a machine.
17. Get to know who in-charge of FIRST-AID is and where boxes are placed and where the first aid can be
found in case of emergency.
18. DO NOT PERFORM ANY WORK YOU ARE NOT TOLD TO.
19. DO NOT PERFORM EXTRA WORK, BE SMART BE SAFE.
20. Avoid wearing clothing that might catch, moving or rotating parts. Long sleeves of shirts, long hair, neck
tie and jewelry are definite hazards in the shop.
21. The tools being used should be well sharpened.
22. The floor of the shop should be well cleaned, free from scrap & wooden pieces carrying nails etc.
23. PPE being used should be in proper position & well secured.
24. USE GOGGLES while cutting, grinding & sawing.
25. Wear SAFETY SHOES. Do not wear canvas shoes; they give no resistance to hard objects dropped on
the feet.
26. Do not run wires over moving or rotating equipment, they might get cut and electrocution could happen.
27. AT THE END OF EACH EXPERIMENT RETURN ALL THE RELEVANT TOOLS TO LAB
INSTRUCTOR.
28. Before any work is carried out in the workshop, permission must be obtained from the Workshop
Supervisor. Never undertake any work unless the potential hazards of the operation are known as precisely

as possible, and the appropriate safety precautions are adopted. Any flame producing activity is not to
commence until the immediate area has been cleared of wood grain. Many materials become quite volatile
when in powdered or dust cloud form.
Workshop practice imparts basic knowledge of various tools and their uses in different sections of manufacturing
such as House Wiring, Carpentry, Metal work, Machine work, Welding etc. It is true that engineers are not going
to become carpenters or blacksmiths or skilled workers on the shop floor, but by exposing themselves to all
working trades, they get a bird eye view of the basic practical activities associated with all sections of
manufacturing. It helps them, when they occupy managerial positions, in understanding the activities and practical
difficulties, so that they can take appropriate decisions. Even when large amount of mechanical equipment is
available for producing or repairing parts, there are still some elements of work which have to be performed by
manual methods. However it must be borne in mind that all workshops and work areas are places of some risk. A
healthy regard for rules and respect for all equipment being used reduces the risk of an accident considerably.
Finally, the engineers must also be familiar with the first aid practices. In case some minor injuries in the form of
cuts, burns, fractures, fainting, electric shock etc. occur in the shop floor, they should know how to give first aid
to the victims.
