INTRODUCTION

Agitato Grandiose Legato is designed for soaring melodic lines ranging from medium to
rapid tempos. It was primarily inspired by the styles of greats like Williams and Mancini.
It is as an enhancement to our Adagio collection, but can also work seamlessly in
concert with a variety of other commercial string libraries. Regardless of your template,
we feel strongly that our Grandiose Legato will become a leading melodic voice in your
sampled string orchestra.

PHILOSOPHY AND APPROACH

For our Grandiose Legato we spent a lot of time dissecting what string players do when they are
playing passionate and soaring melodies. While the phrasing possibilities of strings are virtually
endless, there are some general patterns we observed which helped us push this library into new
territory.

BOWING SPEED
We noticed a vast difference in the way melodic notes are projected due to the speed of the
players bowing stroke. The entrance and exit of both dynamics and vibrato is drastically
different when compared to the bowing of a long sustained note. For this reason, the majority
of the post interval articulations are short and fast bowings. This is crucial to projecting a
melody out front in an orchestral composition, and really sets Grandiose Legato apart from
other legato patches.

*Grandiose Legato also has standard looped sustains and crossfading of dynamics/vibrato
intensity, giving composers a large breadth of phrasing options.

LEGATO INTERVAL INTENSITY

We also noticed that string players tend to perform with a greater intensity on the interval attack
and slur in soaring melodic passages. A slow flowing legato performance is very different from
a soaring/epic one. Try to visualize the way players rock and move in soaring moments. Its an
entirely different emotion that they bring to the transitions of their notes. Capturing this is key to
the emotional intensity of Grandiose Legato. It is also a strong antedate to the dreaded
suction effect we all experience in sample mockups.

ARTICULATIONS

The Grandiose Legato Ensemble (8) and Divisi (3) instruments contain 3 distinct types of legato
interval performances. Velocity determines which interval type will be selected.

Velocity 1-39

portamento

Velocity 40-80

mf-f expressivo legato

Velocity 81-127

f-ff expressivo legato

*play above vel 81 to REALLY have the players dig in!

In the center browser window composers can select which articulation is triggered BOTH before
and after the legato interval. It is possible to choose one articulation before an interval and
another after the interval. The attacks and vibrato character are different for each articulation.
By default, articulations are selected by key switch (C0-G0, C3=middle C). By clicking the cog
wheel next to the articulation name, composers can also choose to switch articulations by
velocity or midi CC. Values for each can be changed by click dragging up and down on the
white numeric or key values. Click the cogs again to hide the windows below.

SUS XFADE
The sus xfade is is comprised of a variety of looped sustains with multiple dynamics and vibrato
intensities. The controls for this articulation are as follows:

CC 1 - crossfade between various dynamic layers.

CC 12 - vibrato intensity.

DYNAMIC ARTICULATIONS (articulations 2-7)

The majority of articulations in Grandiose Legato are natural dynamic performances, meaning
they are NOT static. In keeping with the philosophy described earlier, the dynamic articulations
are fast bowings designed to project the emotion and vibrato in a soaring melodic sense.
Mancini 1 and 2 are our favorites, and best capture a soaring old Hollywood quality.

CONTROLS

DYNAMICS - CC1/Modweel.
For crossfading the dynamic layers of the sustains or shaping the expression of the
other dynamic articulations.

!
EXPRESSION- CC11
Volume Expression

!
LINK ICON
This allows CC1 and CC11 to be controlled by a single fader. This is CC1 by
default. For composers who prefer to shape these two controllers independently,
simply click the LINK icon to OFF. When they are linked the dynamic curve is
steep, allowing for dramatic dynamic pushes. In contrast, with link OFF, the
dynamic curve of CC1 will have a gentler slope. The link icon is ON by default.

LEGATO SPEED (CC 16)

This knob determines how fast the legato intervals are played, giving
composers a lot of flexibility for a variety of tempos. Weve done A LOT of
work under the hood of this patch to ensure the legato is as intuitive as
possible.

!
AUTO-SPEED
When the AUTO SPEED button is illuminated, playing speed determines the
duration of the intervals automatically! In this case, the position of the SPEED
dial sets the upper speed threshold. The intervals will not play faster then the
knobs highest setting. This approach achieves our goal of powerful simplicity
within a very flexible legato system.
LEGATO VOLUME
This is set to an ideal volume by default, but this knob allows composers to
adjust the volume of the legato transitions within a reasonable threshold.

!
*Midi CCs for interface knobs can be customized by right clicking interface
knobs.

SETTINGS

AUTO CHORD
Clicking the cog wheel next to settings will reveal the auto-chord feature.
AUTO CHORD detects when a chord is played and automatically switches off
monophonic legato, allowing for very flexible writing. AUTO CHORD is
turned OFF by default.

!
DYNAMIC/VIBRATO LINK
When this is highlighted, CC1 (dynamics) and CC12 (vibrato) are linked,
allowing you to control both with CC1 modwheel. When this link is disabled,
users can control dynamics and vibrato independently. Try both on your
phrases. The character of softer dynamics is very different for each!

MIC POSITIONS
Agitato has 3 mic options: CLOSE, FAR and MIX. The close microphone is as
close as possible to the strings to give you a clear and defined sound. The far
microphone is a mix of several microphones placed toward the middle and
end of the church, which gives you a more ambient perspective. The Mix
microphone is a sweet spot mix of all the microphones in Agitato. It has the
clarity of the close microphones, while retaining some of the more ambient
qualities of the far microphones. The combination of microphones also allows
you to do surround mixing (5.1) or quadrophonic mixes.

OUTPUT MAPPING
Output mapping allows routing of different mic positions to discrete outputs in
Kontakt. This is essential for surround mixing and other stem preparation. To
change the output, click on the microphone name. A popup window will
reveal the available Kontakt outputs.

SHORT DYNAMIC BOWINGS PATCHES

As a part of our aforementioned exploration of soaring melodic strings, we
recorded a ton of useful short and fast dynamic bowings. Weve included
the large collection we sampled as an inspiring scoring tool. These are
definitely bowings that cannot be achieved through traditional sustain
crossfade methods.
