MLA/APA/AMA Citation:
Tierney, T. J., & Fleishman, J. L. (2011). Give smart: Philanthropy that gets
results. PublicAffairs.
Source Validation: Give Smart is a book written by Thomas Tierney, a nonprofit advisor
and chairman of The Bridgespan Group, and Joel Fleishman, a professor of law and
public policy at Duke University.
How did you find this source?: I found this book in the library.
Intended audience: This book is for individual donors and and foundations who wants
to reach the full philanthropic potential.
What arguments/topics does this source discuss?: The first chapter, titled What are my
values and beliefs?, focuses on the importance of an individual to have a passion for their
philanthropic actions in order to accomplish the most with their money. Sometimes,
many donors try to donate to too many different organizations at the same time and this
spreads an originally plentiful resource too thin. A persons passion can be found in one
of five categories, within a group of People, through addressing a Problem, in a Place, on
a Pathway, or through a Philosophy. It is important to have a clear goal in mind before
you donate. This argument is supported throughout the chapter by examples of successful
donations. A donor must have a clear goal in his or her mind and understand that
philanthropy should not be a one-time event. The decision for philanthropy should reside
in something you connect with and have passion about.
