Oil Field Tubulars

Seam Less Pipes

Four Tubulars:- Drill Collar, Drill Pipe,
Casing and Tubing

Drill Collar

Used to provide WOB

Maintains weight to keep drill string
protected from buckling forces.
Helps to provide pendulum effect to cause
bit to drill a more vertical profile.
Provides sufficient stiffness in drill string.
Used to prevent pressure differential
sticking in bore hole.

Selection of drill collar

Selection criterion for drill collar is based on: Achieving minimum cost of drilling.
 Trouble free drilling
 Maintaining right hole azimuth
 Insuring longer drill pipe life and good performance
 Less tripping time

Selection of drill collar length

For straight vertical wells:For directional wells:I = angle of inclination
L = total length of drill string, Wdc = Linear weight of drill collar in air

Toll joints in drill pipes

IEU(internal external upset) : toll joint is larger than the pipe such
that toll joints ID is less than drill pipe. toll joints OD is larger than
drill pipe.
EU(external upset): toll joint OD is larger than drill pipe but ID is
same as that of drill pipe.
IF(internal flush): toll joint ID is approximately same as that of drill
pipe ID, OD is upset.
IU(internal upset): toll joint ID is less than drill pipe OD is
approximately same as that of drill pipe. this type of pipes are called
as slim hole pipes.

Properties of drill pipes:

1.

Grades: D-55, E-75, X-95, G-105, S-135.

Drill pipe is also classified to account for the degree of wear.

2. Tensile strength:
Pt = Ym .A
A = 3.14 . t(d-t)
Pa = 0.9 Pt
3.Torsional Strength
Q = 0.96167 J Ym / d
J = Polar Moment of Inertia

Collapse
pressure:
maximum
external
pressure against which a
pipe can withstand without
any collapse failure.

Burst pressure: it is the

limit of internal pressure
against which a pipe can
withstand without any
burst failure.

MOP:- The Margin of Overpull is the minimum tension force above

expected working load to account for any drag or stuck pipe. The
MOP used is usually of the order of 100,000 lbs.

MOP = Pa Wa
Pa = Max. allowable design load in tension, lb
Wa = effective axial load.

DRILL S TRING DESIGN CRITERI A.

The criteria used in a drill string design are:
1. Collapse
2. Tension

Casing Design

Collapse pressure originates from the column of mud used to drill

the hole, and acts on the outside of the casing. Since the hydrostatic
pressure of a column of mud increases with depth, collapse pressure
is highest at the bottom and zero at the top.

The following sections will provide details on practical situations that can be encountered
in field operations.

During lost circulation, the

mud level in the well drops
to a height such that the
remaining hydrostatic
pressure of mud is equal to
the formation pressure of
the thief zone.
In this case the mud pressure
exactly balances the
formation pressure of the
thief zone and fluid loss into
the formation will cease.

The length of the mud column remaining inside the casing can be
calculated as follows:-

In oil well casings, burst occurs when the effective internal pressure
inside the casing (internal pressure minus external pressure) exceeds
the casing burst strength.

Burst pressures occur when formation

fluids enter the casing while drilling or
producing next hole.
Reference to Figure , shows that in most
cases the maximum formation pressure will
be encountered when reaching the
TD of the next hole section.
