1. Introduction

Diet sensor is the third party developer on the SCiO platform Diet sensor App was Developed
onthe top of the SCiO platform operated by Consumer Physics

SCiO uses something called near infrared spectoscopy to determine the chemical makeup of food
and drink. Each type of molecule in a food vibrates in its own unique wy, and these vibrations
interact with light to create a unique, optical signature. In brief spectrometers analyze what is in a
substance base on how its molecules interact with light.

This method has been used in labs throughout the world, but with very large expensive
spectrometers. we are finally able to make it available to you with the revolutionary, portable
SCiO,small enough to slip into your

The SCiO shines alight on the food or beverage of your choice when you click a button. then a
tiny optical sensor collects the light reflected from the food sample. It breaks the reflected light
down to its spectrum, or the array of varying wavelengths.

DietSensor builds spectometric models that translate the resulted inforamation into something
really useful a calorie count and the percentage of carbohydrates, fat, and protein contained in
your food. This is all quickly sent and clearly displayed on the DietSensor app on your
smartphone.

We are ever-expanding our database to give you the widest range of food and drink possible ,so
you can always get a clear readout, even for those healthy muffins you just pulled out of the
Oven.

2.Technology
The DietSensor app and Scio scanner can analyze the foods you're eating, and if they're healthy
for you.

Calorie tracking apps seem like a good idea in theory, until you get to know just how
prone they are to human error. After all, how are you supposed to know how many cups
of pasta you have on your plate, or how many cashews are in an ounce ?

While some dietitians have begun asking their clients to send them pictures of their
aliments to provide a more accurate picture of how much theyre eating (and how it
converts into nutrients), now, theres a better and easier way. Meet the DietSensors
app, pairs via Bluetooth with the Scio sensor, which has a small infrared sensor on one
end. When placed against your food, it analyzes the signal reflected by the food, and
then compares it to DietSensor's database to determine what's on your plate. We will
also release a pocket-size scale with a partner, so that you can know the weigh of your
food on the go, too. Within the app, it shows how much carbohydrates, fats, and
proteins are in what youve scanned and weighted, and counts it against your
recommended daily intake. As both the app and the sensor are still in final production
they won't be available until september-2016 the beta test seems to be all set for July
and all pre-orders can be taken from our website. DietSensor is still tweaking its
algorithm to be able to have a large variety of homogeneous food you may wish to eat.

2.2 DietSensor Scans Your Food For Calories

For those of you who count your carbs and calories, DietSensor is looking to make your life
easier. The French-based startup has created a tool that scans your food and determines its
nutritional value.
The idea is that you can go out to eat at a restaurant or at someones home and still keep tabs on
your dietif you dont mind holding up this gadget.
A CES Innovation Award winner, DietSensor is showcasing its product at the Consumer
Electronics Show in Las Vegas this week. TechCrunch spoke to Remy Bonnasse, co-founder and
CEO.
Its the next generation of diet and nutrition apps, said Bonnasse. This will do all the heavy
calculation for you. You dont have to think.
There is a compatible app that keeps track of and displays the nutritional content. DietSensor has
worked with doctors and nutritionists to create customized diets.
Bonnasse explained that his product works by using Bluetooth and connecting it with a
molecular sensor developed by SCiO. The molecules vibrate and interact with light in different
ways, helping to determine whats inside of the food.

2.3 Dietsensor claims to tell you what's really in your food

Tracking what you eat is no easy task. Apps like MyFitnessPal and LoseIt help streamline the
process, but it remains difficult when eating out or with homemade food. A new company is
looking to change that.
DietSensor claims that in conjunction with a small molecular scanner known as the SCiO, it can
instantly collect accurate and user-friendly nutritional information on a wide range of food. This
sounded too good to be true, so I had to go and see it for myself. It seemed to work in a
controlled demo, but it's functionality has limitations and I remain skeptical.
The SCiO device, which is developed by Israeli company Consumer Physics, claims to be able
read the chemical makeup of materials. It's non-intrusive and doesn't need to touch the object.
You simply point and scan.
Here's how they say it works: The handheld scanner sends an infrared beam on the surface of the
food or beverage. It then captures the reflected wavelengths that carry the signature of its
composition. The DietSensor app will then interpret the data and create a meal profile that
provides you with the nutritional facts, along with some general tips about how many calories,
carbs, or proteins you should eat for the meal.

The scanner can only read homogeneous foods, those with a single level such as chicken,
crackers, bread, cheese, and cereal. It was unable to determine the nutrition of the Snickers bar I
had with me. While the DietSensor app lets you manually input nutritional data in these
situations, that's no different than apps like MyFitnessPal and Lose It.
I saw the sensor and app in action. While it was able to get the fill the app with nutritional data, I
didn't have the specific food label with me to verify whether the information was correct or not.

The DietSensor is also pricey. The small SCiO scanner will set you back $249,
while the Dietsensor app will include a monthly subscription of between $10 to
$20. The total cost over a year would be just under $500 (AU$700 or 340,
converted directly). I'm left wondering, perhaps we are just better off scheduling a
few sessions with a professional nutritionist.
The DietSensor app is slated to launch by September 2016.

3. DietSensor User Illustrative Scenarios: Diabetes

3.1DietSensor User Illustrative Scenario: Type 1 Diabetic
In this illustrative scenario, we explore how the DietSensor App, used in conjunction with the
optional spectroscopic sensor, allows easier measurement and calculation of the total
carbohydrates in a meal (and also helps encourage healthy eating habits) for Margaret, a
type 1 Diabetic.

Margaret has type 1 diabetes. To effectively manage her condition, she needs to be able
to monitor and control the amount of insulin she uses each day, and so needs to
measure the carbohydrates that she eats in order to calculate just how much insulin she
needs to use to keep her levels balanced.

One of the most significant challenges facing Margaret and other type 1 Diabetics is
that they need to calculate everything they eat. This can be a constant battle because it
requires real time and effort crunching the numbers and ensuring that the information
is accurate. We have learned through trial and error roughly what each foods carb level
is. However, this can still be something of a guessing game, given the spikes and dips in
blood sugar often seen after eating.
Margaret uses the DietSensor system, which enables the carbohydrate values of the
food and drink that type 1 Diabetics plan to consume to be measured and added in a
variety of ways. For example, she can access the Apps large nutritional database, which
Department of CSE

MREC(Autonomous)

contains more than 600,000 items, to search for the values of any type of food, or scan
a products barcode go get nutritional data, and add favorite foods to her own gallery, to
make tracking data really easy. A key feature of the DietSensor ecosystem is the
optional, pocket-sized SCiO spectroscopic scanner, which can be used to gather
information on the make-up of homogenous food types by reading the cells of the food
directly and generating nutritional information which is ported directly into the App via
Bluetooth, which is handy when you dont have a label or barcode, or are cooking at
home from scratch. Portion size is important when monitoring carbohydrate intake.
Margaret uses DietSensors Bluetooth scale, another add-on device, that weighs and
sends data directly into the app, giving her a significant degree of control.
Effectively, DietSensor makes the repetitive estimating of carbs a simple task because it
does all the heavy calculation. In Margarets case, the Apps additional features help her
to balance her meals, for example, tracking all macro nutrients (fat, protein and carbs)
that she eats, providing her with actionable advice and suggestions for what to eat,
based on the historical data of the day and the goals that she set herself initially when
she set up her DietSensor profile, broken out by nutrient and by meal. As fats and
proteins are also modifying the way she digests carbs, using DietSensor means that
keeping her blood sugar under control is much less complicated, and can all be done on
her cellphone.

3.2 Helping to manage chronic diseases like type 2 diabetes

In this illustrative scenario, we explore how the DietSensor App can provide support
to manage chronic conditions.
First of all, the bad news
As food has become more processed, commoditized and ubiquitous, we have
seen significant changes in how what we eat and drink negatively impacts
Department of CSE

MREC(Autonomous)

Diet sensor scio food scanner

health, resulting in an exponential increase in diet-related conditions and the

need for close nutritional control to manage chronic diseases. There has been
a transition in nutritional foods, which has seen plant based diets being
replaced by diets that are richer in added sugars and animal fats. The amount
of food consumption has been increasing, and globalization combined with
increasing population and rising incomes have increased demand for
processed food, resulting in excessive consumption of saturated fat and sugar,
and lack of nutritive elements as fibers, minerals and vitamins.
We know that improvements in diet and physical activity can help reduce the
risk of chronic diseases. A whole food diet rich in fruits and vegetables,
ideally organic, is highly recommended. However, only a small part of the
population has enough fruits and vegetables in their diets. A 2015 report by
the Center for Disease Control (CDC) shows that only 1 in 10 Americans eat
enough fruit and vegetables. Furthermore, an article on Vox.com on August 31
2016 shows just how easy it is to become obese in America. Its scary!
Now, the good news
The good news is that we are seeing more and more people concerned about
their health, their familys health and the impact of mass produced food on the
planet, adopting a whole food diet and rejecting processed foods. There is
evidence to support the fact that a whole food, balanced diet can reduce the
risk of developing obesity, diabetes, heart disease and certain cancers, and in
some cases has reversed cancer or diabetes. Of course, everyones
metabolism and genetic make-up are different, but its encouraging to see
Department of CSE

MREC(Autonomous)

Diet sensor scio food scanner

more and more of us are taking an active interest in nutrition and recognizing
that tools that enable to see, measure and plan the nutritional value of the
food we consume are a great help. After all, bad nutrition is the root cause of,
and good nutrition the first medicine for, such diseases!
Josiah, a student who is studying links between diet and chronic diseases,
recently came across DietSensor, which works as a standalone application or
in conjunction with an associated handheld molecular sensor and digital scale,
which allow the user to determine what is being eaten and keep track of
portion amount. After giving the DietSensor App a try, Josiah is now a fan.
This blending of science, technology and nutritional health management
sounds like something out of science fiction, but its real, and available to
everyone. The user friendly App is able to read the nutritional value of food
via the linked sensor that can scan homogenous food and drink and determine
its nutritional value via its molecular make-up. A barcode scanner can also
process nutritional data direct from packaging and pull information from an
integrated database of some 600,000 food and drink items. Using the scale at
home, Josiah can measure portion sizes and import that data automatically
direct into the App via Bluetooth.
Making nutritional data easy to access is not the final goal of DietSensor. It is
just the beginning, because information has the ability to empower the 1.4
billion overweight people in the world, and help them make better decisions
related to their health. Thats what Josiah found interesting in DietSensor. Its
not just one more food-logging tool. It is a nutrition coach in your pocket. Each
time Josiah enters a meal he can find suggestions in real time to balance this
meal, given what he ate since this morning, and the target intake goal for this

time of the day, based on each chronic condition. And whats more, he gets
education about healthy eating with an easy to read lesson that is displayed
after each meal, tailored to his topics of interest (type 1 diabetes, type 2
diabetes, weight loss, and more).
What all of this boils down to is that we now have the easy to use tools
available to support us in eating a balanced a healthy food and actively
reducing the risk of chronic diseases, including obesity, diabetes, cardio
vascular diseases, cancers, dental diseases and osteoporosis.

3.3 DietSensor User Illustrative Scenario: Dieting and Weight Loss

Department of CSE

MREC(Autonomous)

Diet sensor scio food scanner

In this illustrative scenario, we explore how the DietSensor App enables users, in
this case Molly, who are dieting or seeking to lose weight effectively analyze what
they eat and keep a track of their diet.

Molly is your typical dieter. Like many of us, she has the best of intentions,
tries to eat healthily, but sometimes falls off the wagon. That cheesecake after
dinner can just be oh so tempting! Molly tries to work out but faces a constant
battle to shed weight. Sometimes life just gets in the way, you know how it is.
The problem is that Molly doesnt really know whats in the food that she eats,
other than reading the label of ingredients and nutritional data. Besides being
time-consuming, how does that information translate for her personally? It
can be hard to accurately track and plan. Molly has tried many Apps and many
different diets, but sometimes lacks the discipline to keep up, and personal
trainers are expensive!
Molly recently started using DietSensor App on her iPhone. What was
obvious to her right from the get go was that the App is full of really useful
features and easy to use. Its educational as it is, firstly, a nutrition coach in her
pocket. It not only helps Molly track what she eats, but it teaches her how to
eat balanced meals with its 12-week coaching program. It shows her not only
the calories but the value of macro-nutrients (fats, proteins, carbs) of all her
food and drink. It allows her to compare her nutrient intake throughout of the
day to the intake goal for that specific time. To do that, it pulls the most up to
date nutritional data from the integrated database or by scanning the product

Department of CSE

MREC(Autonomous)

Diet sensor scio food scanner

barcode. This data is interpreted for Molly and then logged automatically
against her personalized goals. Easy.
Besides the food catalog and barcode scanning feature, the most fascinating
option for Molly is that she can gather data using an add-on handheld device
called the SCiO scanner, which is a small device that provides nutritional
data by scanning the cells of homogenous foods and drinks, which often dont
come with a nutritional label, especially when homemade. The scanner
generates chemical and nutritional data, which is fed directly into App and
translated into meaningful information. Molly also purchased Dietsensors
Bluetooth digital scale, which also connects to the App and allows her to
weigh the food she eats at home, giving her greater portion control in terms of
importing data directly and making calculating the exact number of nutrients
she eats to stay on track for the day really easy and convenient.
Using DietSensor, Molly is able to keep track of what she is eating against her
calorie budget per day, but more importantly, DietSensor can break that data
out by carbs, fats and proteins AND by each meal. With the Apps food
suggestions feature, Molly has an idea of what to eat and when, which allows
her to keep track of her weight loss program. She can see recommendations
regarding portion size based on historical data of the day and the goals that
she set herself initially by nutrient and by meal, which helps her decide how
much food I need to eat to help me to achieve weight loss. Of course it still
requires self-control and will power, but its helped Molly to take fitness and
achieving an ideal weight more seriously. DietSensor App also integrates with
Mollys FitBit fitness tracker among others, so she can use her activity data

Department of CSE

MREC(Autonomous)

Diet sensor scio food scanner

to customize her energy budget per day, which is like the final piece of the
jigsaw.

For those of us watching their nutritional intake, seeking to lose weight or

maintain a healthy weight, DietSensor is a great tool to help monitor and
control food and drink intake and provide guidance to keep on track. It helps
to see what we are putting into our body and how we can control food intake
in order to hit goals.

3.4 Helping people tackle obesity

In this illustrative scenario, we explore how the DietSensor App can provide support
people with obesity in terms of making informed food decisions and seeking to
address their condition.
According to the date from September 1 2016 published on
StateOfObesity.org, in the United States adult obesity rates now exceed 35

Department of CSE

MREC(Autonomous)

Diet sensor scio food scanner

percent in four states, 30 percent in 25 states and are above 20 percent in all
states. Louisiana has the highest adult obesity rate at 36.2 percent and
Colorado has the lowest at 20.2 percent.
Ever since Dave was at elementary school back in the 1980s, he remembers
being the odd one out because he was large. He was called different names
and the rest of his class didnt let him join in the games they played. It hurt his
feelings but also gave him the resolve to try and educate himself with regards
to food. He tried to make smart choices, which could be challenging at times,
given that the food choices available at his school were typically pizza, burgers
and fries.
It is no secret that the amount of calories people eat and drink has a direct
impact on their weight. If we consume the same amount of calories that the
body needs and burns, then the weight stays constant. The rule of thumb is
that if we consume more calories, our weight goes up, and if we consume less,
our weight comes down.
Food and nutrition education is really important, and once Dave saw the
nutritional values in the fast food that we as a nation so readily consume, he
was shocked. That was really the turning point in his food journey. As Dave
entered adulthood he really made an effort to take control over his weight,
educating himself through books and researching online.
Were bombarded with advertisements for fast food, candy and soda. Fast
food is convenient and an easy trap to fall into as its generally cheap to buy.
Even so-called medical experts give conflicting advice. The question that
Dave has been asking are does it matter where the calories come from? From
Department of CSE

MREC(Autonomous)

Diet sensor scio food scanner

specific nutrients like fat, protein or carbohydrates? Does the type of food
matter like whole grains or potato chips?
What Dave found after reading various studies was that a balanced diet is
better than just cutting out fat completely or not eating carbohydrates at all.
Finding that balance, and seeking to maintain that with the correct type of
exercise that benefits heavier people such as Dave is key.

Dave now uses the DietSensor App and knows that slow and consistent
weight loss is the most beneficial, rather than the boom and bust diets where
rapid weight loss often results in the weight being put back on plus, typically
10%, according to studies. What really interested Dave about DietSensor was
the ability to completely personalize his own program and set realistic goals
that are gradually helping him to lose weight progressively. It gives him
guidelines for nutrition levels broken out by meal times. Doing this enables
him to track carbs, proteins and fat and get recommendations around what
type of food (and how much) to eat for his next meal in order to stay on track.
After each meal, 250 short lessons about nutrition and weight loss have made
it easy for Dave to make educated choices. He was not the same before and
after.
What Dave has also found is that it doesnt have to be expensive to eat a
healthy balanced diet. In fact, he found a really great farmers market in his
neighborhood and can buy local and organic produce for a reasonable price.
He joined a local walking group and started walking, his goal being to build up

Department of CSE

MREC(Autonomous)

Diet sensor scio food scanner

his stamina and eventually take up running and cycling. Dave has also taken
space in a communal garden so he can actually start to grow his own veggies.

Dave has started really taking control of his diet using DietSensor, and has
more energy and a more positive outlook. DietSensor is not a silver bullet by
any means, and at the end of the day like most things in life, you get out what
you put in, but its a really good tool that is helping folks like Dave to improve
their standard of living at their own pace and start to make the changes they
feel they need.
The App promotes self-discipline, which is a vital ingredient in sustaining
weight loss. Of course, it requires commitment and dedication, but, in Daves
case, he decided to make a choice for himself, as he just refused to become just
another negative statistic. He said enough is enough.

3.5 DietSensor User Illustrative Scenarios: Fitness

In this illustrative scenario, we explore how the DietSensor App helps users focused
on wellness and fitness to keep to their regime and plan family meals.

Sandra had always been interested in fitness and effectively keeping in shape.
At school and in college years, she was very active in various sports, such as
field hockey, the swim team and track team. Since then, as she embarked on
her career, become a mother and started to raise a family, she remained
active, taking part in fitness and exercise programs. These days, Sandra loves
to swim, take yoga classes with some of her girlfriends, go running and, along
with her partner Julia and three children, aged 11, 13 and 16, goes cycling
when time allows.
Like many of us, as Sandra reached her mid-thirties, her metabolism started to
slow down. She recognized that fitness must be combined with healthy and
measured eating in order to be really effective. Of course, this sounds like
common sense, but when we are younger we can get away with a lot more as
we tend to burn energy at a faster rate. As we age, we need to be more clinical
about what we eat and how that affects us. We have to work harder to
maintain our condition.
Sandra and Julia both work full-time jobs and, with three children in school,
have very busy schedules outside of work. However, one thing that remains
constant in the family is a focus on eating well and eating regularly. Rarely
does the family eat fast food and family mealtime is one of the most important
traditions that Sandra and her family keep. As a parent, Sandra is keen to
educate her children in terms of food and making positive choices, and she
also like to know what is in the food that her family is eating at home.
Sandra and Julia both use the DietSensor smartphone App to plan and
monitor their individual nutritional activity and also to plan meals for the

family. They purchased the add-on SCiO sensor, which enables them to scan
homogenous foods, for example, meat, fruit, bread, milk etc., and generate
chemical and nutritional data, which is fed directly into the App and translated
into meaningful information, and Dietsensors optional Bluetooth digital scale,
which also connects to the App and allows them to weigh food, giving greater
portion control in terms of importing data directly and making calculating the
exact number of nutrients required to stay on track for the day really easy and
convenient. The App combines the data from the scale and sensor to tell
Sandra exactly what is on her plate in terms of nutrients. She can add other
food information using the Apps resident food database, which has pretty
much everything that we eat in there, or she can add data by scanning product
barcodes. One aspect of the DietSensor App that is really convenient for
Sandra is adding favorite foods or commonly eaten foods to her profile in the
App, which makes logging meals really easy. After all, we are creatures of
habit
What DietSensor gives Sandra and Julia is complete nutritional visibility and
control over everything that they eat or drink. They can find out what is in the
food they want to eat before they eat it and can keep track of what they have
eaten. They can take advantage of the next meal recommendations that the
App offers. All of which are amazingly helpful in terms of diet management.
Linking the DietSensor App to the sensor and scale provides additional
features that are invaluable when planning meals for the family.
A big part of wellness is activity and exercise. The final piece of the fitness and
nutrition puzzle is the fact that the DietSensor App seamlessly interfaces with

Department of CSE

Sandra and Julias Garmin VivoSmart fitness trackers. In fact, its compatible
with devices from around 25 of the top manufacturers, so means less fiddling
around manually importing data. Its just convenient, which is key for those of
us who balances work, home and family.

4 Diabetes and Nutrients

Diabetes: preventing the disease starts with healthy
eating

Department of CSE

MREC(Autonomous)

Diet sensor scio food scanner

Weight loss, diet changes and physical activity all play a role in preventing or
delaying diabetes and the many complications that go along with it, including heart
disease, stroke, kidney disease, blindness and other health problems.

More than 86 million of Americans have prediabetes according to a recent

study. Prediabetes arises when blood sugar levels exceeds the normal range
but not too high to be associated with Type 2 diabetes. Despite the various
researches, the exact causes of prediabetes have not yet been confirmed.
However, there are no doubts that obesity, lack of physical activity and poor
diet are key factors. A balanced diet can help in weight management thus
reducing the risks of prediabetes.
It is sometimes very difficult to have a balanced diet. Failing to do so can lead
to frustration. DietSensor can help those struggling to keep healthy eating
habits. The application gives accurate results with any homogeneous food,

even with homemade dishes and beverages. By scanning your food,

Dietsensor helps you in managing your macro nutrients and calories intake.
The nutrition coaching app can be used in combination with the SCiO scanner
for a higher level of accuracy.

5 Health Eating
Healthy eating : skipping breakfast may increase the risk
of stroke
Coronary heart disease and stroke risk may increase with skipping breakfast
regularly. Some researchers found that those who routinely skipped on the most
important meal of the day had a higher risk of heart attack and coronary heart
disease.
With a busy schedule, it is easy to skip breakfast. But, according to a recent
study, taking a few minutes to eat something in the morning can really save
your life. It is nothing new that breakfast provides our body and brain with the
essential nutrients. Starting the day with an empty stomach is like trying to
start a car without petrol. Various research have shown that those who skip
breakfast have 27% higher risk of heart attack or health complications caused
by heart diseases. Moreover, a lack of proper meals at breakfast may also lead
to obesity and type 2 diabetes.
Nutritionists and other health experts advise a healthy breakfast within two
hours of waking. A breakfast full of junk foods defeats the purpose. You

should ensure that your meal is healthy and provides reasonable amount of
energy and nutrients such as protein, carbohydrates, vitamins and
minerals. Dietsensor gives accurate results with any homogeneous food, even
with homemade dishes and beverages. The application and the SCiO help you
to keep a healthy balance of nutrients at every meal.

Apples and Blueberries Lower Risk For Diabetes

A new study released in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition has found
that apples and pears, as well as blueberries, are fruits particularly associated
with a lower risk of Type 2 diabetes. The study looked at the diets of more than
200,000 people, and was originally created to determine whether flavonoid

subclasses lead to diabetes. The latter proves that blueberries, apples and pears
have a correlation with a lower incidence of diabetes in more than 12,600 cases.

6 THE PROBLEMS
A good nutritional monitoring is essential in prevention and management of
food-related chronicle diseases (Type 1 and 2 Diabetes, cardiovascular
diseases, dyslipidemia, overweight and obesity).

Overweight and obesity is the first non viral epidemic with 1,4 billion
people worldwide. In 2014, diabetes caused $550 billion in health
expenditure worldwide, 5 million premature death and 1 amputation every
30 seconds. This diabetes epidemic will grow by 55% by 2035, affecting 600
million people.
The only digital solutions today in food intake tracking are declarative
journaling apps. 40 million american adults used them last year whereas
60% say that they try to track their diet. It seems that the majority of
potential users is still waiting for a convenient way to track food.

7 THE SOLUTION
DietSensor is the easiest and most accurate nutrient and calorie
counter on the market, thanks to its automatic food logging
capabilities with connected sensors. It embeds all classical
functions of state of the art manual diet tracking apps, and adds
two revolutionary options, in order to offer an outstanding
customer experience to its users: a micro connected scale and a
molecular sensor that fits in the palm of its hand.
With these sensors, food logging becomes a lot more simple and
accurate than manual entries from lookup tables. The user just
drops the food on its plate, press a button to illuminate (scan) it
and the food is automatically logged into its meal, with the
accurate weight and nutritional values that do not come from a
standard list.
