th KizPhonics Digraph iPad Activity

Katie Risolo and Andrea Policastro

Professor Chamblin

Course: EDU 574

Date: October 23, 2016

Grade: 1st Grade

Topic: th Digraph

Content Area: ELA

Lesson Objectives
Following a lesson on the th digraph and how it is two letters that make one sound, the
students will create a list of 8 words that have the digraph th in it, as indicated in the
KizPhonics App on the iPads.
CCLS/+NYS Standards and Indicators
English Language Arts Standard (CCSS): Reading: Foundational Skills (RF.1.2):
Demonstrate understanding of spoken words, syllables, and sounds (phonemes).
Indicator:
This will be evident when the students appropriately identify the th digraph in
words and determine the sound it makes.
English Language Arts Standard (CCSS): Reading: Foundational Skills (RF1.3):
Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words.
a. Know the spelling-sound correspondences for common consonant digraphs
Indicator:
This will be evident when the students use their knowledge of the sound th
makes in order to determine the word it is in all throughout the lesson.
Motivation
The teacher will begin the lesson by giving each student a Fundations Letter Board. The teacher
will display the digraph th on the SMARTBoard and ask the students to each create a word that
has it, using the magnetic letter tiles. The students will take turns sharing with the class their
words and the teacher will make a list of the words on the board. The teacher will inform the
students that they are digraph detectives and are to be on the lookout for where th falls in each
word. Together, the teacher and students will go over the list and determine the sound th makes
in each word.

Learning Strategies

Group Discussion: This will be evident when the whole class participates in a discussion about
words that begin with the digraph th and where in the word they hear the th sound.
Teacher Demonstration: This will be evident when the teacher will model how to use the
KizPhonics App on the SMARTBoard for the students, before they receive their iPads.
Technology Simulation: This will be evident when the students engage in the KizPhonics App on
their iPads.
Pair and Share: This will be evident when the students work together to go over their lists of 8
words after completing the KizPhonics App th digraph activities.
Adaptations
The student who has difficulty focusing will be provided with copies of
Fundations Sound Cards, vocabulary words with the digraph highlighted, and visual aids
prior to the lesson. This student will be encouraged to use the cards to help sound out
unknown words or letter sounds, as well as formulate words. This student will have the
opportunity to draw a picture that correlates with the given digraph. The student will also
have strategic seating in the classroom close to the teacher in case they are in need of
additional support and refocusing throughout the lesson.
Differentiation of Instruction
The teacher realizes that not all students learn the same way. The students will be separated by
ability level while completing the KizPhonics App activity and its corresponding handout. The
above grade level students create a list of any word they come across in the digraph activities on
the KizPhonics App and be sure to underline the digraph in each word. Once the students have a

th KizPhonics Digraph iPad Activity

list of 8 words, they will go back and draw the item next to its name. The on and below grade
level will be provided an incomplete list of words they will come across while engaging in the
KizPhonics App, in the order that it appears. The students will complete the word using the
appropriate spelling, being sure it includes a digraph. The students will complete the list of 8
words, then go back and draw the item next to its name.
Developmental Procedures
The teacher will begin the lesson by completing the Sound Cards Quick Drill on
the carpet.
(When I hold up a card, remember to say the letter name, keyword, and the sound that
makes. What is the difference between the cards that are in yellow and the cards that
are pink?)
The teacher will teach and review the concept of digraphs and introduce the ck
digraph.
(What is a digraph? A digraph is two letters with one sound. What kinds of letters
make up a digraph? Two consonants make up the letters in a digraph. The digraph
th comes at the beginning of a word.)
The students will engage in a word card mini activity where the teacher will
provide the students with a card that either has a C-V-C word and/or a word with a
digraph in it to tap out, sound out and read aloud.
(How can we tap out this word? Does this word have a digraph in it? Remember to
sound out each letter then put it all together! What does this word say?)
The students will return to their seats and get out their Fundations Composition
Book and the teacher will facilitate the written work dictation mini activity by asking the
students to write sounds, words and a sentence that they hear being said.
(During this mini activity, you are to write whatever you hear. Try your best and sound
out any unknown words.
Sounds: 1. z 2. d
3. r
Review Words (C-V-C): 1. kit 2. cut
Current Words: 1. this
2. thud
Trick Words: 1. thumb
2. thank
Sentence: 1. The rose has many thorns.
The teacher will introduce the KizPhonics App to the students by using AirDrop
on the SMARTBoard. The teacher will indicate that they will be playing games that have
reading activities to help them create words with the th digraph and to also be a digraph
detective and highlight any words that have this digraph.
The students will engage in the KizPhonics App and create a list of 8 words that
appeared in the app that have the digraph th in it.
(While playing the KizPhonics App, be sure to write down every th word you come
across as you engage in the activities. Also, while reading, be sure to ask yourself: Does

th KizPhonics Digraph iPad Activity

this word have the th digraph in it? Do I hear the th sound in this word? If you
answer yes to these questions, then write it down on the corresponding handout.)
The students will Pair and Share once they have a list of 8 words. The students
will work together to go over their list and check for spelling.
Assessment
The teacher will assess students knowledge of the digraph th in their completion of the
KizPhonics App and its corresponding handout. The teacher will be checking for spelling,
understanding and comprehension, especially pertaining to the digraph th and any words it is
in.
Independent Practice
Following the lesson, students will be provided with a controlled text passage entitled, Thelma
and Theo. The students will work independently to read the passage and underline words with
the digraph th in it. After reading, the students with create 1 question about Thelma and 1
question about Theo in which the answer could be found directly in the reading.
Follow-up: Direct Teacher Intervention and Academic Enrichment
Direct Teacher Intervention:
The teacher will work independently with the student who needs any academic
support on understanding the concept of digraphs and examples of words that have the
ck digraph in it. Using Fundations Sound Cards and th words on index cards, the
teacher will reiterate the concept of digraphs and that they are two letters that make one
sound in a word. The student will be encouraged to sound out the th words to practice.
The teacher will sit next to the student as they complete the KizPhonics App and provide
any guidance as needed. The student will complete the corresponding handout by filling
in the blanks and drawing a picture independently.
Academic Enrichment:
The students in need of academic enrichment will create a mini poster on a 8 x
11 piece of construction paper about words that have the letter th in it. The students
will come prepared with the mini poster the following day and be ready to share it with
the class. The students will be encouraged to have 5-7 words on their list and to try and
use words that were not featured on the KizPhonics App.
