Known as the 'King's Bodyguard' (in this case, the 'king' is the heart), the pericardium meridian is the heart's
protector. It is regarded as a Fire-energy organ.
The pericardium provides the heart with physical protection, its energy also protects the heart from damage and
disruption from excessive emotional energies generated by the other organs, such as anger from the liver, fear
from the kidneys, and grief from the lungs.
Extreme or long-lasting outbursts of the Seven Emotions disrupt energy balance and can be causes of disease.
Without the pericardium to protect the heart, it would be subject to damage from the strong fluctuations in energy,
caused by emotional ups and downs.

This meridian is responsible for the movement and transformation of various solids and fluids throughout the
system, as well as for the production and circulation of nourishing and protective energy.
It is a functional energy system, involved in regulating the activities of other organs, composed of three parts,
known as 'burners', located in thorax, abdomen, and pelvis.
The Upper Burner controls intake, the Middle Burner controls transformation, the Lower Burner controls
elimination.

intestine meridian on the cheek.
The superficial branch continues to the front of the ear and crosses to the outer corner of the eyebrow, where it
again joins the gallbladder meridian.

Element: Metal
Physical Imbalances:
Paired with the lungs, the large intestine depends on the lungs for movement via the expansion and contraction of
the diaphragm, which works like a pump to give impetus to peristalsis by regulating abdominal pressure. Sluggish
bowels may be stimulated by deep diaphragm breathing and by strengthening lung energy.
Congested lungs and clogged bronchial passages may be cleared by purging the bowels.
Symptoms of abdominal pain, intestinal cramping, diarrhea, constipation and dysentery as well as disorders of the
mouth, teeth, nose and throat.
Emotional Imbalances:
The Large Intestine meridian is affected by the emotions of sadness, grief, and worry. An imbalance in the Large
Intestine can result in physical weakness and provoke emotional introversion, accompanied by feelings of
depression, irritability, discouragement, distress and apathy and low self-esteem.

The meridian clock is a very efficient tool for diagnosis of energy imbalances... and finding the right treatment.
Each Meridian is most active at certain times of the day/night The Meridian Clock - or Horary Clock is helpful in
pinpointing deficient or over-active meridian function. Studying the meridian pathways and Acupressure points
for transmitting Qi healing energy is key to transformational energy work
53 | P a g e
www.natural-health-zone.com
Each of the 12 meridians flow in an up- or down-wards direction - one flows into another. Keeping these
lines/channels open is essential for good health. The energy of each organ meridian is strongest during 2 hours in
specific cycles, completing a 24 hour cycle every day.
6 meridians are 'Yin' in quality and move upwards and 6 are 'Yang' and move downwards.
Each meridian comes into highest action at a certain time of day... this is when its paired meridian is lowest. 12
hours later, this meridian is highest while the paired meridian is low.
Each meridian is influenced by elements and season - there are Five Elements - Water, Wood, Fire, Earth and
Metal.
You can become familiar with your body cycles by noticing the changes in the way you feel at different times of
the day/night.
The meridian clock graphic is helpful for quick reference.
System check...
Do you get tired at a particular times of day? Are you prone, at certain times of the day, to headaches? Are you
irritable? When? Grumpy? Energetic? Sharp?
The energy cycle is fairly similar in all of us... we just have to pay attention to it.
We can optimize these cycles by focusing on the meridians energizing specific acu-points and bring balance
in the energy flow.
In the Chinese system the five elements are not static forms - the more accurate translation would be: 'The Five
Walks' or 'The Five Moves'.

Wood Element people are strong and claim their space. Their vision of truth and justice inspire others. They are
sure of themselves with good judgement and wise decisions.
The spring person is at risk of becoming arrogant, inflexible and opinionated.
Wood Element people talk loudly, in choppy rhythm. Their walk also is choppy, hitting the ground with clear,
concise movements.
When under stress the Spring person's assertiveness may turn into anger.

The 'opposites principle' can be applied throughout our daily lives, on every level.
In the natural world everything contains these two opposite components. They not only oppose each other, but
also contain each other one cannot exist without the other coexisting and interdependent complementing
each other.
In traditional Chinese medicine all symptomatic diagnoses are based on the philosophy of this principle, the two
forces that control the running of the universe.
The Yin represents the feminine side of nature, encompassing darkness, tranquillity, expansion, depth, cold and
wetness. The moon and water are Yin elements.
The Yang represents the masculine principle, encompassing light, activity, height, contraction, heat and dryness.
The heaven, the sun and fire are Yang elements.
Yin is the force that causes things to expand and rise, Yang causes things to contract and descend.
Chinese medical treatments attempt to reach balance in a patient's body in order to promote health.

YinYang Classification
Yang
Exterior, head, upper part, back, lateral side of limbs, skin, muscle, upper orifices, and Yang
meridians
Yin
Interior, feet, lower part, medial side of limbs, tendons, bones, lower orifices, Yin meridians, essence,
blood and body fluids.
Practical applications:
In the spirit of restoring proper balance, some rules of treatment have been established:
'The way of health and happiness should be open to everyone; it should be practical. Any theory, be it
scientific, religious or philosophical, is useless if it is too difficult to understand or impractical for daily living.'
