XenDesktop7 Installation
Basic XD7 Installation, Much anticipated Citrix released version 7 of their flagship XenDesktop product at the end
of June 2013. This tutorial will help get you started with a basic installation and give you a glimpse of the new look
and feel Citrix has put into their product. Though this is a basic tutorial many advanced design concepts are
discussed throughout this screenshot focused document.

Configuration

Setting and Screen Shot

Basic auto run:

Citrix has made the installation of
XenDesktop 7 as clean as one
could imagine, if you are running
on a support Operating System
this will appear in white, if not it
will be greyed out. Next simply
select Delivery Controller and
the installation begins.
Also, new to XenDesktop 7 is the
inclusion of XenApp with a new
FMA (FlexCast Management)
architecture. This is Citrix telling
us their moving forward plans
does not involve the old IMA
architecture. Important also to
note that there is no longer a
XenApp installation, instead
(those familiar with previous
versions of XenDesktop will
notice) only a Virtual Delivery
Agent is installed onto an
Application server with RDS
installed. The agent registers with
the Delivery Controller and
communication flows directly
through this agent registration
process.

Configuration

Setting and Screen Shot

Setup Starts

Delivery Controller, Studio, and

Director Must Be Selected.
XenDesktop 7 will automatically
give you a 30 day 99 user
evaluation license upon
installation.
For smaller deployments the
License Server and StoreFront
services can be installed on the
same desktop controller.
However it is a better practice to
separate these components as this
helps troubleshoot issues and
provides additional levels of
resiliency.
Larger deployments will assuredly
deploy multiple XD 7 Desktop
Controllers (DDC) and multiple
StoreFront Servers load balanced
behind a NetScaler Appliance.

Configuration

Ports required for the Desktop

Controller for internal
communication. Should a secure
connection be necessary to the
outside through a NetScaler
Gateway appliance ports 80, 443,
and either 1492 or 2598 (session
reliability) will need to be seen by
the NetScaler internally whereas
443 will be the only port
necessary for external
communication.

Summary of components to be
installed

Configuration

Install Begins

Install Completed

Configuration

Setting and Screen Shot

Citrix introduced a nice step by

step guide to getting started right
inside the console.

Start by creating a site.

Configuration

Setting and Screen Shot

Follow the steps, here we are

installing the database into a SQL
2008R2 database, Citrix does
allow SQL express for quick
POC installs and does not
recommend them for
deployments over 25. Keep in
mind that starting with XD5 the
database must always be up and
reachable by the controller or
new connections will be refused
so plan your database (mirroring,
cluster) accordingly.

XenDesktop7 will create the

database for you if the logged in
account has access to create it

Configuration

Setting and Screen Shot

License server can be specified or

the controller will automatically
grant a 30 day evaluation.

Upon successfully inputting a

license server select the licensing
that will be utilized.

Configuration

Setting and Screen Shot

Citrix supports multiple

hypervisors (vSphere, HyperV,
and XenServer). Input relevant
data for the connection.

The Controller picks up the

network configuration of your
hypervisor. You will have the
ability to create more connection
profiles that match your
respective storage/network
configuration.

Configuration

Setting and Screen Shot

Storage configuration, select

which storage automatically
created vms will be put onto.

NFS has long been the protocol

of choice for VDI architects, if it
is available to you utilize it. A
discussion as to why will be
posted on our LearnVDI blogs
shortly.

10

Configuration

Setting and Screen Shot

Currently Citrix has decided to

take out their Application
Streaming due to their lack of
Windows 2012 / Windows 8
support for their streaming
product. Citrix is moving
forward with fully supporting
App-V within their Desktop
controller controls.

We chose not to integrate App-V

in this installation guide.

11

Configuration

Setting and Screen Shot

And We are done..

Well Almost..

12

Configuration

Setting and Screen Shot

Now we must create a catalog

Catalog creation begins

13

Configuration

Setting and Screen Shot

On this tab we have the options

of selecting which operating
system we are going to deliver
apps/desktops from.

Here we select whether the

machines are existing physical
desktops (remote PC) or Virtual
Machines (classic VDI)
Also note that in this installation
we will utilize Machine Creation
Services (MCS). The ability to use
MCS will be greyed out if you had
previously not sepcified a
network/storage profile as seen
back on page 10.

14

Configuration

Setting and Screen Shot

Enable the connection to

RANDOM or STATIC desktops

Settings for the Citrix Personal

Virtual Disk to enable settings to
be saved.

15

Configuration

Setting and Screen Shot

Windows operating system

master image selection.
XenDesktop will automatically
take a snapshot of the master
image if there isnt one already
created.

Specify the number of machines

to create along with
specifications.
Also specify the size of the
personal virtual disk (PVD)
default is 10GB with P: being the
default drive letter.

16

Configuration

Setting and Screen Shot

Next specify the OU by which

the machines will be installed
into.

In most environments it is
advisable to have a service
account that has the authority
over a specific OU for just this
purpose.

Name the Machine Catalog and

we are finished.

17

Configuration

Setting and Screen Shot

Copies Image and Creates

number of specified machines

Create delivery group

18

Configuration

Setting and Screen Shot

Finally we create a delivery group

by which we will assign machines
to.

The catalog we created shows the

available machines, simply select
the amount you want to deploy
and click next.

19

Configuration

Setting and Screen Shot

The virtual desktops can be

utilized for desktop access or
application access (hosted
desktop apps are limited to a
single application session per
desktop)

Specify the users/groups assigned

to the group of desktops.

20

Configuration

Setting and Screen Shot

Here we have the option of

allowing Citrix StoreFront to
manage the version of Receiver
that is installed on the connecting
clients desktop.

Give the delivery group a desktop

name and we are finished.

21

Configuration

Setting and Screen Shot

The XenDesktop Licensing tab.

22

StoreFront 2.0 Installation

StoreFront is Citrixs replacement for Web Interface moving forward. StoreFront allows for user subscriptions to
applications and desktops allowing users to select their most used resource and put them on their workspace.
Prior versions of StoreFront required a database server be present to maintain these user subscriptions. However
with 2.0 Citrix has developed a synchronization service called the Citrix Configuration Replication service that
automatically synchronizes these user subscriptions across all nodes in the cluster.

Configuration

Setting and Screen Shot

StoreFront 2.0 Install on

XenDestkop 7 CD

23

Configuration

Setting and Screen Shot

First Step, specify URL defaults

to server name and click next

Give a store name

24

Configuration

Setting and Screen Shot

Add Delivery Controllers (can be

XenApp servers of any supported
version) a list is provided in the
next screenshot.

Clicking Add brings up an

additional box where the Desktop
Controller is added

Similar to the Add Farms in Web

Interface

25

Configuration

Setting and Screen Shot

This is the secure access

component and is an optional
configuration. For informational
purposes all of this information
must be filled out and a
corresponding NetScaler
Gateway deployment put in place,
A later blog on our LearnVDI
website will discuss this.
Note that the callback URL may
not be internally accessible, either
put a DNS record in place or
create a host entry on the server.

26

Configuration

Setting and Screen Shot

The STA must be put in properly

in order for secure
communication to function
correctly.

Creation is Complete.

27

Configuration

Setting and Screen Shot

The Site is up, dont forget to

configure legacy support as seen
on the final screenshot in the
bottom right. This isnt
something that has to be done
however if you want to enable the
old PNAGENT configuration
(config.xml) file this must be
completed.

28

Configuration

Setting and Screen Shot

Legacy Support as pictured to

enable the PNA config.xml

There we have it a base install of

StoreFront
