Introduction
Thank you for purchasing this PX-W4824TU CD-R/RW drive. In this
manual we will explain how to install your PX-W4824TU CD-R/RW drive
correctly.
This manual has to be followed step by step and is primarily aimed to those
who will connect the PX-W4824TU CD-R/RW drive to PCs.
There are probably a number of sections in this manual that you can skip.
However, we ask that everyone from novice level to experienced computer
professionals read the sections marked with the symbol !

Feature
USB2.0 and USB 1.1 Compatibility
PX-W4824TU CD-R/RW drive supports USB2.0 High Speed interface*1 and
USB1.1 compatible.

Plextor High Quality & High Speed 48x Full CAV Writing
PX-W4824TU supports 48x Full CAV. PX-W4824TU changes the Write
Strategy at 1x by 1x, and changes the Write laser power at 1 min. by 1 min.
address. The user can get the high quality disc.

Mt. Rainier (CD-MRW) support


PX-W4824TU supports the Mt. Rainier (CD-MRW) function which is the
newest CD-RW packet-writing standard. By support of a background format, the writing of data is made with the feeling immediately written in FD
after short time formatting. Moreover by early eject function; you can eject
the disc while the disc is under formatting. By the defect management you
can get the high reliability data, which the defected address is automatically
replaced if PX-W4824TU finds some error sector(s).

High Speed Writing, Re-Writing and Reading


PX-W4824TU supports 48x*2 CAV writing, 24x P-CAV*2/3 re-writing and
48x*2 maximum reading. PX-W4824TU also supports fast 65ms read access.

BURN-Proof*4
PX-W4824TU supports BURN-Proof function. Using BURN-Proof, the
drive will not experience Buffer Under Run Error, which has been the biggest threat for the CD-R/RW users.

Windows Compatible
PX-W4824TU is compatible with Windows98SE*5/Me, Windows2000 and
Windows XP.
*1 It works with USB2.0 when PX-W4824TU CD-R/RW drive is connected to
USB2.0 host.
*2 In case of USB2.0 connected. (When PX-W4824TU CD-R/RW drive is connected to USB1.1, the maximum writing/re-writing/reading speed is 6x.)

When uses When uses 16-24x CD-RW writing speed, please use
Ultra High Speed CD-RW disc. The Ultra Speed CD-RW disc is
not compatible with High Speed CD-RW drive for writing.

When uses "BURN-Proof", your writing software needs to support such function. To read data, we recommend you to use 4x or higher speed CD-ROM
Drive or Audio Equipment made in or after 1995. We haven't made sure the
performance with the drive made before 1995. Some Audio Equipment made
before 1994 may have extremely low PLL performance.
Warning :

"BURN-Proof" stands for proof against Buffer Under Run error,


not for proof against burning.

*5 USB storage driver is needed to be installed on Windows 98SE from the


bundled installation CD-ROM.
For writing at 8x speed or faster, please use USB2.0 card or board.

Save your Box


If you received your PX-W4824TU CD-R/RW drive in a Plextor box, you
should save the box after you have installed your drive. There are a lot of
channels that a PX-W4824TU CD-R/RW drive must go through on its way
from us to you. Our box and its packaging material were designed and
tested to ensure that your PX-W4824TU CD-R/RW drive can handle rough
treatment but arrive in working order.
We cannot assume liability for any damage your drive sustains during shipment. Therefore, please ship your drive in the safest manner possible. We
believe your drive will be the most secured if transported in a Plextor box.
We hope you will never have to send your drive back to us. If you do however, we hope you will send it in a Plextor box.
CAUTION : When after quick erased the CD-RW Disc and the more little
data is re-written than erased data, it takes more long time to
initialize the CD-RW disc. We recommend to use full erase
mode to avoid one.

Precautions
Your new CD-R/RW drive is a precision electromechanical device. Like the
rest of your computer system, it requires reasonable amount of care during
installation and use.
Please read this manual carefully and keep it for easy reference. Use this
manual for installation, operation and troubleshooting. See your dealer or
call the Plextor Technical Support department if your drive should be repaired.
* Do not place the PX-W4824TU CD-R/RW drive in direct sunlight, on
heating units, or near electrical appliances which draw large amounts of
current, such as a high-powered audio amplifiers, microwave ovens,
toasters, hair dryers, etc.
* Keep the area around your drive clean from dust, smoke, and other contaminants.
* Use a soft, dust-free cloth for cleaning your drive. Don't put your drive in
contact with moisture or liquids including water, cleaning - fluids, or solvents. Thinner, benzene, or alcohol-based solvents can mark your drive's
surface.
* Keep your CD-R/RW disc clean. See Chapter 5 for tips on handling and
cleaning CD-R/RW discs.
* Do not drop or jolt the drive.
* Do not attempt to open the drive and service by yourself. Removing the
cover may expose you to harmful electrical voltages or the laser beam.
For your safety, entrust service only to Plextor-authorized service personnel.
* Do not move, carry or transport the disc in the drive because this can
cause damage.
* The copyright law of each countries govern the reproduction of copyrighted works. The person using the PX-W4824TU CD-R/RW drive may
be liable for its use to make unauthorized copies of copyrighted works.
Plextor does not authorize or condone the use of PX-W4824TU CD-R/
RW drive for the unauthorized reproduction of copyrighted works.

CHAPTER 2

Drive Features
Front Panel

Disc Tray
Put disc on the tray after ejecting disc tray.
Push the tray to load CD, but never push so hard.
Emergency Eject Hole
In case of emergency insert a eject stick, paper clip or other thin, rigid
object to eject the tray only when the automatic eject button isn't
working. Turn off the power before doing this.

As a dual color LED is used, lights in green when


the power is turned on and BURN-Proof is activated, lights in yellow (both green and orange
lighted) when reading, and blinks in orange when
writing. Blinks fast at 41~48x CD-R and 24x CDRW, middle fast at 32~40x CD-R and 4~10x CDRW, and slow at 4~31x CD-R and 4x CD-RW
when writing data.

When slide the cover, it will find the diagnostics switch. In
this case, the USB connector cover is closed. The switch is
on and power switch is on with pushing Eject Button, the
drive diagnostics starts to work. It is impossible to connect
the USB cable when the self-test cover is open.

SpeedRead for the PX-W4824TU


Function
SpeedRead can control maximum 40x read or 48x read. In order to enable the SpeedRead
(maximum 48x reading), continue pushing eject button more than 3 seconds. This function
shall be cancelled (maximum 40x reading) when the disc is ejected or power is off.
SpeedRead is available only with CD-ROM Mode-1 format disc.

Connect to PC as below.

Note: If there is no USB2.0 host port or host card, please connect to normal USB1.1 host
port. In this case, PX-W4824TU CD-R/RW drive works with USB1.1 device.
Do NOT use the AC adapter, USB cable except PX-W4824TU CD-R/RW drive
bundled.

Windows98SE User
Windows98SE does not support USB storage device driver. Before connecting to PXW4824TU CD-R/RW drive, please install storage driver as below.

Insert the bundled "Installation CD-ROM" to your CD-ROM drive.


Select "USB storage driver" button.
Follow the instruction to complete the installation.
Reboot your PC.
Connect PX-W4824TU CD-R/RW drive.
If PX-W4824TU CD-R/RW drive is connected to USB1.1 host, it works as USB1.1 device.

WindowsMe, 2000, XP User


It is no need to install special driver to work as USB1.1 device.

Drive Positioning
Please use PX-W4824TU CD-R/RW drive at "Horizontal" position. Do Not use it at Vertical
position. And when you keep PX-W4824TU CD-R/RW drive on your desk or shelf, please
keep PX-W4824TU CD-R/RW drive at "Horizontal position".

Using Tray
CAUTION : Do not attach any seals or labels to your CD-R/RW discs.
They may cause many read errors or increased vibration.

5.1 Tray Loading


Loading Disc
1) Press Eject button on the front
panel.
2) Place the disc on the Tray.
3) To close the Tray, push the front
panel of the Tray lightly or press
Eject button again.

Removing Disc
1) Push the Eject button, the Tray will eject from the drive in 2 ~ 3 sec.
2) Remove the disc from the Tray. Be careful not to scratch with the Tray.
3) If the Tray won't eject from the drive after pushing the Eject button, eject using Emergency Eject Hole.

Ejecting with Emergency Eject Hole


Turn off power to the drive first.
Insert an eject stick into the Emergency Eject Hole. The Tray should
now eject the drive.

CHAPTER 5 Using Tray

5.2 Cleaning the Discs


If the disc is dusty, you can clean it with a commercially available dust removal spray. Be careful don't scratch the disc when wiping off.
* CD type cleaner cannot be used.
Hint: Keeping your CD-R/RW disc in an original CD-R/RW case all the
time will prevent it from becoming dirty or damaged.

CHAPTER 6

Firmware Version Upgrades


PX-W4824TU CD-R/RW drive uses Flash type firmware. You can
download and update the newest version at anytime via Internet when
the firmware was updated. For your information, the URL is as follows:

6.1 How to Confirm Firmware Version


The Windows98SE, 2000, XP users can confirm the firmware version on PXW4824TU CD-R/RW drive property with Device Manager.

6.2 Preparation for Firmware Version Upgrade


Connect to Plextor Web site (http://www.plextor.com), and download the
new firmware program that contains firmware file and upgrade program
into your local drive. About the application OS, please refer to the above
Plextor Web Site.

6.3 How to Upgrade Firmware


Confirm if PX-W4824TU is recognized on the system. Run the downloaded
firmware program on your local drive. When the message "Firmware upgrade has completed" appears, re-boot the computer.
Notice: Make sure to terminate any other applications when you upgrade
firmware, and also make sure NOT TO run any other applications
during the running of firmware upgrade program. In case the system or PC power fails while running the firmware upgrade program, carry out the firmware program again. When the new firmware is loading to PX-W4824TU CD-R/RW DRIVE, PX-W4824TU
CD-R/RW DRIVE indicators are blinking.

CHAPTER 7

Diagnostic Function
When some write problem occurs, it is hard to find where it is at CD-RW drive, CD-R
media, or system problem. PX-W4824TU supports diagnostic function to find if the drive
itself has problem or not, without connecting USB data cable.
PX-W4824TU supports CD write/read function test.
You can run "write test", "randam access test" and "verify test" with CD-R function.
The steps for the diagnostic are as follows:
1. Turn off the PC power then disconnect the USB cable from the drive.
2. Open the Self Test door at the rear panel and turn on the switch.
3. Turn on the power with pushing Eject button. The LED of drive blinks.
4. Insert a blank CD-R disc that Plextor recommends.
The drive starts the diagnostic.
If the LED blinks 3 times, the disc is not a blank CD-R.
5. After finishing the diagnostic without any problem, the disc is ejected. If a
problem is found, the disc is not ejected* and green LED blinks:
1 blinking: write or read error.
2 blinking: initialize error.
* The disc is ejected by pushing the eject button.
* If the Self Test Switch is on, the Self Test cover does not close.

Troubleshooting
If you have trouble with your PX-W4824TU CD-R/RW drive, follow the guidelines below.

8.1 Read Problems


Symptom
No drive recognition.

No Sound from
external speaker
when youre playing
a music CD.

connect speakers to the headphone jack
of the drive. If you hear sound from the
speaker, the drive is working fine.

Ensure that the USB2.0 board is properly


recognized in the system.
No USB2.0 device driver for the USB2.0
board is installed.

Ensure that the PX-W4824TU CD-R/RW


drive is correctly linked to the
soundboard.
Check if the (MCI) CD-Audio driver is
installed on your system.
Low sound level from Improper audio cable
connection between the
CD-R/RW drive.
CD-R/RW drive and
soundboard.

Check if masters, CD and line levels of


the audio mixer are correct.
Check the above mentioned levels also
when several audio mixers are installed.

CHAPTER 8 Troubleshooting

Warranty Information
PLEXTOR CORP. (PLEXTOR), warrants your PX-W4824TU CD-R/RW drive against any
defect in material and workmanship, under normal use, for a period of one year from the
date of purchase. In the event this product is found to be defective within the warranty
period, PLEXTOR will, at its option, repair or replace the defective CD-R/RW drive.
This warranty is void if; a) the drive was operated or stored under condition of abnormal use
or maintenance ; b) if the drive is repaired, modified or altered, unless such repair, modification of alteration is expressly authorized in writing by PLEXTOR; c) if the drive was subject to abuse, neglect, lightning strike, electrical fault, improper packaging, or accident; d)
if the drive was installed improperly; or, e) if the serial number of the drive is defaced or
missing; f) if the attached warranty card is not presented: g) if the broken consumable parts
such as a pickup, motors etc.
PLEXTOR will not, under any circumstances, be liable for direct, special or consequential
damages such as, but not limited to, damage or loss of property or equipment, loss of profits
or revenues, cost of replacement goods, or expense or inconvenience caused by service
interruptions. Under no circumstances will any person be entitled to any sum greater than
the purchase price paid for the drive.
To obtain warranty service, you should first contact the vendor from whom you purchased
your PLEXTOR PX-W4824TU CD-R/RW drive. You may be asked to furnish proof of purchase to confirm that drive is still under warranty.
All PX-W4824TU CD-R/RW drives returned to PLEXTOR or its authorized dealer must be
securely packaged and shipped postage prepaid.
