In 2018, kids who see Bona Vitas ads and take MVP vitamins may not listen to their parents
because the kids think they are the Most Valuable Person and they are better than their
parents. This could lead to disobedience.

challenge must answer three questions:

WHAT is the challenge?
WHY is it a challenge?
HOW does it relate to the future scene?

Underlying Problem
Out of the 16 challenges, choose 1 that is the most important
o Choose one that is not so large that it covers the whole Future Scene but doesnt focus
on one tiny aspect either
The Underlying Problem should be phrased as a question
The most important thing to focus on when writing an Underlying Problem is that you follow
the specific structure/steps

An underlying problem must have 5 steps:

1.
Condition Phrase: The underlying problem begins with the CP, a fact from the
future scene or related research that is the basis for the challenge chosen for
the Underlying Problem
2.
Stem: How might we or In what ways might we
3.
Key Verb Phrase: ONE active key verb in a phrase that tells what you must
SOLVE
4.
Purpose: The outcome that you would like to have as the result of the Key
Verb Phrase (...SO THAT)
5.
Future Scene Parameters: Elements that must be placed in the UP from the
Future Scene including 1) TIME, 2) PLACE, and 3) TOPIC

In 2025, when many tourists are visiting Antarctica and leaving behind damage and
destruction, how might we reduce the amount of harm to the continent caused by tourists so
that Antarctica may remain a pristine environment?

Solutions
Write 16 solutions in complete sentences that solve the underlying problem

Each solution must answer four questions Who will carry out the solution? (make up a company, use a current organization such
as EPA, or use a group of people like single mothers
What will be done? (What is the solution?)
How will it work? (brief)
Why is it being done?

The National Advertising Review Board will select children to serve on the Childrens
Advertising Board (CAB). CAB will have a say in what kinds of advertising are directed toward
children, as well as helping companies create more honest campaigns. This will help reduce
childrens vulnerability to slick ads like those produced by Bona Vita for MVP.

Criteria
Address only one concern with each criterion
Dont say: Which solution will be easiest to implement and the most cost-effective?
Say: Which solution will be easiest to implement? and Which solution will be the
most cost-effective? two different criteria
Use superlatives (best, least, most, greatest, etc.) when phrasing your criteria
Phrase your criteria in a positive way
Dont say: Which solution is the most expensive?
Say: Which solution is the least expensive?

Different types of criteria get you different number of points

Generic: 1 point
Adding Future Scene Parameters (topic, time, place) do not make the topic less
generic (Which solution will be the easiest to implement in London in 2032?)
Example- Which solution will be the easiest to implement?
Modified: 2 points
A generic criteria with added words that are specific to the future scene
If the future scene was set in a country called Universia, you could say which
solution will be the easiest for the president of Universia to implement?
Advanced: 3 points
Write criteria that are based on the Key Verb Phrase or the purpose from the
Underlying Problem
Write criteria that is specific to the topic (for this competition, genetics)
8=best

1=worst
