MOGADISHU - Staff of the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) gathered in the Somali capital Mogadishu last evening, to reflect on the milestones achieved by the mission to date.
The end of year ceremony was presided over by Hon. Lydia Wanyoto, the Deputy Special Representative of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission (DSRCC) for Somalia.
“Security is good and we are delivering our mandate of securing Somalia,” the DSRCC told staff.
In an event attended by AMISOM Force Commander Lt. Gen. Osman Noor Soubagleh, the staff looked back a decade since AMISOM first deployed in Somalia. The mission will be marking 10 years in the country, in March 2017.
The successes of the Mission have culminated in Somalia’s first indirect electoral process in over four decades. The electoral exercise is being held under relative peace and stability, as the country prepares to elect a new president in January 2017.
“Your continued efforts to defeat Al-Shabaab have not come unnoticed. I sincerely appreciate and I want to thank you for your sacrifice and those of your families in the support of the AMISOM mission,” Lt. Gen. Soubagleh said in his remarks.
“There is plenty of work to be done this coming year. Your combined efforts will open the books of history,” he added.
