To Whom It May Concern;

My name is Laramie Hlus and I am a recent graduate of the University of Alberta, receiving a Bachelor of
Education Degree with a major in Biology and a minor in Mathematics. I feel that I can bring a lot of
academic strength to the classroom with my proficiency in computer programs, my attention to detail,
my strong communication skills, and my enthusiasm for science and helping students learn.
I have had a lot of previous teaching/leading/mentoring experience. I participated in 4-H for 9 years, and
as I progressed within the club, it allowed me to guide younger members to be successful in their
various projects. I have also had numerous volunteer opportunities such as leading a Can Skate Program
and participating as a facilitator at a schools Challenge Day. In the spring semester of 2014, I
volunteered with Big Brothers Big Sisters. During this time I did an In-School mentorship program at
Winston Churchill School (Lloydminster, AB) where I worked with a young girl in Gr. 4. I helped her with
school work, we played games together, and I was a source of support for her. In the fall of 2014 I
participated in the Study Buddy Program at Victoria School of the Arts in Edmonton. While there, I
mentored and worked with students in a Math 20-2 class that were struggling with the various
mathematical concepts, such as fractions and polynomials. I completed my IPT Field Experience
Practicum where I taught Gr. 8 Science at Hillcrest Junior High School in Edmonton, and my APT
practicum where I taught Biology 20, Chemistry 20, and Math 20-3 at J.R. Robson School. Currently, I
have been substitute teaching within the Buffalo Trail Public School Division and the Elk Island Public
School Division, working with all grades, and all subject areas.
What I hope to learn while working in your school is more techniques regarding classroom management,
and effective teaching strategies. I also believe that some of the responsibilities that I will have in the
school setting are to keep a professional relationship between the students and myself, and also to do
the best I can to help the students succeed. My teaching philosophy is not just to teach students the
content within the textbooks, but to get to know them and their personal goals and aspirations. As a
new teacher, I am a firm believer in commitment, dedication, and hard work, and I hope that I can pass
those qualities onto my students and guide them to achieve their goals.
I would like to thank you for accepting me into your classroom and I look forward to working with you!
Sincerely,

Laramie Hlus
