The AES Barry Power Project is a 230 MW, 1-on-1, gas fired
combined cycle power plant located at Barry in South Wales, UK. The
plant is owned by AES Barry Limited, a subsidiary of AES
Corporation, one of the worlds largest independent power producers.
The plant is a merchant plant with the output bid into the UK National
Electricity Pool on a daily basis.
Engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) of the project was
accomplished by Black & Veatch through TBV Power, a joint venture
with Tarmac Construction International of the UK. The project was
executed on a fast track basis with performance acceptance in
September 1998.
The plant is located on a small 4-acre site in the middle of an
industrial complex. The site had been previously used for other
industrial processes and special attention was paid during construction
to the containment and disposal of contaminated soil left on the site.
Conservation of water in the region is of prime importance, and the
project uses a condensate polisher, and an air cooled condenser for
cycle heat rejection. The plant uses a Siemens V94.2 gas turbine
manufactured by Ansaldo, Nooter-Eriksen HRSG and MHI steam
turbine, and includes large gas compressors to accommodate low
natural gas delivery pressures. The plant has been designed for cycling
and two-shift operation to provide flexibility in meeting the variable
generation profile of a merchant plant.
