ANSYSCFXenablesyoutouseTimeTransformationTransientRotorStatorinterfacestomodel
multistageturbomachineryconfigurations.Ingeneral,theTimeTransformationmethodisusedfor
smalltomoderatepitchchange,multistageturbomachines.NotethattheTimeTransformation
methodcannotbeusedwithincompressiblecases.TheTimeTransformationmethodisnot
recommendedwhentherotationrateoftherotorisverylow.
ThemultistagemodelingcapabilityoftheTimeTransformationmethodinANSYSCFXis
demonstratedbytheexamplesinthefollowingsections.

theTimeTransformationMethod
Inthisspecialsituation,whereeveryotherrowoftheturbomachinehassamenumberofblades,
wehavetechnicallytheconfigurationofasingledisturbancebeingimposedineachpassage.
Therefore,thereisonlyonepitchratiopresentintheconfiguration.Anexampleofsuchacase
wouldbeamachineinwhichallstatorrowshavethesamenumberofbladesandallrotorsrows
havethesamenumberofblades,butthenumberofbladesdiffersbetweenthestatorrowsand
therotorrows.ThisspecialcasecanbemodeledaccuratelybyusingTTcorrectiononalltheTRS
interfaces(TTTRS)betweenrows.Figure6.6:1.5stagemachinewithequalnumberofbladesin
rows1&3butdifferentthaninrow2.FlowcanbeaccuratelymodeledviaasequenceofTT
correctedTRSinterfaces.demonstratesanexampleofa1.5stageturbomachinewithanequal
numberofbladesinthefirstandthirdrows,butadifferentbladecountinthemiddlerow.TTTRS
interfaceshavebeenappliedsequentiallytothisconfiguration.
Tosetupthiscase:
1.Setthetworotor/statorinterfaces(intheexampleofFigure6.6:1.5stagemachinewith
equalnumberofbladesinrows1&3butdifferentthaninrow2.Flowcanbeaccurately
modeledviaasequenceofTTcorrectedTRSinterfaces.,theIGV/RotorandtheRotor/Stator
interfaces)asTransientRotorStator(TRS).
2.IntheOutlinetreeview,edittheTransientBladeRowModelsobjectunderthe
applicableflowanalysis.
3.Createtwodisturbancesofthesametype(TT)andassigneachofthemtotherespective
TRSinterfacescreatedinstep1.

asobtainingaccuratemachineperformance.Thelimitationonacceptablepitchratiowithuseof
theTTmethodstillappliestothismodelingtechnique.

TimeTransformationMethod
Inthisconfiguration,eachrowhasadifferentpitchvalueortwodistinctpitchratiosacrossthe
machine,asshowninthefollowingfigure.TheTimeTransformationTRSinterfacecanalsobe
appliedsequentiallybetweentheIGVandRotor,andbetweentheRotorandStator.Thisextension
oftheTimeTransformationTRSinterfaceallowsforcapturingbothupstreamanddownstream
bladepassingfrequenciesintherotorpassage,makingthismodelingmethodusefulforforced
responseanalysis.

3.CreateTimeTransformationdisturbancesforeachoftheTRSinterfacesthatarecorrected
byTimeTransformation.
Thismodelingstrategywillallowforobtainingaccuratemachineperformanceaswellascapturing
bladepassingsignalsinrows1and2.Ontheotherhand,row3maycontainpollutedfrequency
contentduetomodelingapproximation.Thelimitationonacceptablepitchratiowithuseofthe
TimeTransformationmethodstillappliestothismodelingtechnique.
Important:ItisnotrecommendedthatyouuseTimeTransformationTRSfor
everyrotorstatorinterfacebeyonda1.5stageconfiguration.Forturbomachines
withmorethan1.5stages,werecommendthemodelingstrategyshownin
ModelingamultistageturbomachinewithTimeTransformationTRSandother
interfaces:ProfileTransformation&Stage.

TRSandotherinterfaces:ProfileTransformation&Stage
AccuratemultistageperformancecanbepredictedbyusingacombinationofTimeTransformation
TRSandotherinterfacemodelssuchasProfileTransformationTRSorStageinterface(mixing
plane).Formaximumaccuracy,itisrecommendedthatyouuseTimeTransformationTRSateach
rotorpassageinlet,andaProfileTransformationTRSorStageinterfaceattherotorpassage
outlet.TheideaistominimizemodelingerrorattheTRSinterfaceswhereflowshocksmightbe
crossingbyusingTimeTransformationTRSmodelingatthoseinterfaces.Thenexttwofigures
illustratetwocommonpossiblecombinationsofinterfacesformodelingmultistageconfigurations.

Thismodelingstrategywillallowforobtainingaccuratemachineperformanceforturbinesand
compressors.However,thismodelingstrategyisnotintendedtobeusedforcapturingaccurate
bladepassingsignalsthroughoutthemachineduetothemodelingapproximationoftheProfile
Transformationmethod.ThelimitationonacceptablepitchratiosusingtheTimeTransformation
methodstillappliestothismodelingtechnique.

6.8.5.4.ModelingamultistageturbomachinewithTimeTransformation
TRSandsinglesidedTimeTransformationinterfaces(STTTRS)
Formultistagemachines,analternativetousingPTTRSorTTTRSmodelsonbothsidesofTRS
interfacesistoapplythesocalledsinglesidedTTinterface(STTTRS).TheSTTTRSinterface
modelappliesthePTmodeltoonesideoftheinterface(typicallytheupstreamside)andtheTT
modeltotheotherside(typicallythedownstreamside).
Also,youcanreversethiscorrectionifnecessary(forexample,ifyouwanttocapturesignalsfrom
thedownstreamcomponent).TheadvantageofusingSTTTRSoverPTTRSisthatSTTTRS
maintainstheupstreambladewakethicknessasitconvectsdownstream.Thismodelingstrategy
resultsinmoreaccurateaccountingofmachineperformanceandlosses.
Formaximumaccuracy,itisrecommendedthatyouuseTTTRSattherotorpassageinletand

Thismodelingstrategycanimprovetheaccuracyofmachineperformancepredictionsforboth
turbinesandcompressors.However,thistypeofmodelingisnotintendedforcapturingaccurate
bladepassingsignalsthroughoutthemachineduetothemodelingapproximationoftheSTTTRS
method.ThelimitationonacceptablepitchratiowithuseoftheTTmethodstillappliestothis
modelingtechnique.
