Dear Student,
We need to make sure every application document is in place and in the best of shape
so that we maximize our chances of getting admission. Each document must be
very professionally presented, and toward that end, Edb will be there to assist
you.
Below is a list of the documents that will be needed for your application.

Resume
A resume enables the admissions committee to get an overall view of ones
educational background, work experience, hobbies and other extra curricular
activities.

Statement of Purpose
SOP is a critical part of the application packet. The key issue that the SOP
needs to address are your purpose in graduate study, the area of study in which
you wish to specialize, your future use of your graduate study and your special
preparation and fitness for study in the very field.

Letters of Recommendation
Recos should touch upon academic performance, communication skills,
innovative thinking, teamwork abilities, overall personality and the extent of
confidence of the referee in the applicants ability to pursue the chosen study
program. Normally each university requires two recommendation letters with
each application.
Employer Recommendation (if any)
Sealed and certified by the respective organization. MS students may have an
employer recommendation if they have had any work experience.

Work experience letter from the employer (if any)

MS students are advised to show their work experience certificates at the time
of their admission.

Mark Sheets
Mark sheets are needed for admission, certified by the school or the college
only. If the student has obtained a degree, then a copy of the degree must be
enclosed also.

Project Synopsis (If Applicable)

This is a brief outline of the project that you have undertaken at College. It
will give the admissions committee a rough idea as to how you have been able
to apply your theoretical knowledge to the practical world.

Copies of your Extra Curricular Certificates

All the extra curricular activity certificates must be in English. If they are in a
regional language, they should be translated into English.

Financial Documents (For visas only)

The financial documents are an assurance to the university that in case, the
school does not offer any financial aid; the applicant would be in a position to
support his/her education during the course of study. The financial documents
required are the bank letter and the financial affidavit.

Copies of IELTS scores

It will take 2-3 weeks for the ETS to send the score reports to the selected
schools. Official score reports should be mailed directly from the ETS. It is
always better to include attested copies of these exams with your application.

Covering letter
The covering letter introduces the applicant. It mentions the list of documents,
which are enclosed in the application packet.

Application Form
It should be correctly filled and should be attached with all the other
supporting documents. One can also fill out online application forms; however
care should be taken that they should be filled out at least one week prior to
sending out the application packet as they may include signature forms that
need to be sent along with the supporting documents.

Visa Guidance
After all the application procedures are over and once you have your Confirmation of
Enrollment (COE) in place, then comes the visa counseling. We take you through
the entire procedure of the visa, i.e.; the documents required, the financial
documents, the type of questions asked etc.
The above documents will be required to finish your paper work ahead of time in
order to allow you to send out your applications way before the deadlines.
To help you complete this paper work, we have set internal deadlines, and hence in
delaying us, you delay your applications!

What is the Statement of Purpose?

As the name signifies, the Statement of Purpose is your personal statement about who
you are, what has influenced your career path so far, your professional interests and
where you plan to go from here. It need not be a bold statement of facts; several
successful SOPs address these questions through anecdotes, stories or by describing
their hero. Whether your SOP is subtle or to the point, it must be well written to be
successful.
This is because the SOP is the only of your application packet over which you have
full control. Your academic and extra-curricular records are in the past. The SOP is
your chance to talk directly to the admissions committee. To make you stand out from
among a multitude of similar qualified candidates. To convince the committee that
you have the spark, the thirst for knowledge that could add value to your control.
A good SOP will certainly improve your chances of getting admission to the school of
your choice, and even compensate for weaker portions of your application such as
less-than-perfect grades. A bad SOP on the other hand, has the potential to drag
down an otherwise strong application.
If you plan correctly, you can give yourself enough time to submit a well written,
polished essay that will boost your chances for admission. Equally important, this is a
great opportunity to look inside yourself and be rewarded by a better understanding of
who you are. Writing a reasonably good statement of purpose is not an impossible
task. It requires care, attention and patience. And enough time for you to be able to
write several drafts, show them to people and polish the essay till you get a version
you are happy with.
Done right, this will even turn out to be an enjoyable process. And you will be the
winner when the admissions committee applauds it.
What do colleges look for in an SOP?
The primary question admissions committee members ask themselves when they read
a Statement of Purpose is: What does this essay tell me about the person who wrote
it? Put yourself in an admission officers shoes. From among thousands of
applications, you have to choose the fraction of students that will compromise next
years incoming class. A mixture of interesting, confident and enthusiastic people who
will make the class a stimulating place. Academic achievements and good test scores
are important. But in an era where the majority of applicants have good academic
records, it becomes increasingly difficult to distinguish between individuals and
decide who gets the offer of admission.
When you apply, each of the items in the application packet- recommendations, extracurricular achievements, work samples adds an extra dimension to your personality.

But it is the SOP that brings your application to life. Which is why each essay is read
carefully by at least two and often four or five people before a decision is taken on the
application.
However, only the SOP or application essays can bring out your uniqueness. And
therefore make or break your application. An applicant who does not take the essay
seriously is throwing away the best opportunities available.
So are the admission officers looking for specific personality sorts? Well, Yes and No.
Creativity, Curiosity, pride in your work, an enthusiasm for learning, a capacity for
teamwork, the ability to think independently and so on are all so good attributes, and
most of us share these in varying proportions. But what schools look for is a mix of
individuals that together, form a well-balanced class. This would include several
personality types.
The SOP Questionnaire: To be answered and sent back to Edb.
Here are a few guidelines on how to prepare your SOP:
In about 250 words try answering the following:
1. What are your current qualifications?
2. Do you have any work experience? If yes, tell me how it has benefited you.
3. What made you choose the field you are currently studying in? Mention why you
preferred it to the other options available to you?
4. Give a background about your father? What is his current line of business? Do
you plan to join him upon graduation?
Use another 130 words to write about your 3 most significant achievements
In about 120 words write about some of your memorable moments/experiences
in sports/academics/travel/hobbies and other extra curricular activities.
Please also list any social service or contribution you have made to the
community.
Summary:
1. Write about your academic career and career goals.
2. List your honor, prizes, awards etc.
3. Describe your work experience.
4. Explain unusual circumstance events in your life.
5. Include participation in sports and extra-circular activities.
6. Be concise, clear and honest.
Please submit this to Edb after one week of receiving this welcome packet in order to enable us to
give you a well written and thoughtful SOP after you have given us all the possible insights into
your past life and future aspirations. It is imperative that you give the above points some good,
hard thought before you could actually come up with a reasonably well-written passage.

Recommendation Letters
Information of the recommender and your interaction with them, to be sent to

Universities require that each applicant be recommended to their University by the

teacher/professors who taught the applicant

Hence each application package must contain a maximum of 2 recommendation

letters.
These recos have to be confidential. Ensure each RECO is:
Typed on Institutional Letterhead/ Teachers letterhead separate for each college
All signed in original by the recommender, after photocopying or get separate
originals

The Letters of recommendations are a vital part of the application package. These are
letters from your professors/or anyone else other than family members and friends
whom you have worked or studied with. Almost all the universities require that you
send 2 letters of recommendations.
The letters should ideally be from professors who have taught you core subjects in
your field of specialization. You can also ask professors who have taught you subjects
such as English & Math. A recommendation letter from the Head of Department of
your major field is very vital and would definitely be an edge over the competition.

But the HOD should have taught you or should have a significant rapport with you to
write this recommendation.
Many universities have their own format for recommendation letters and provide
students with various tables, which ask the recommended to rate the students ability
on various different scales. Please be advised that this format is optional and students
are welcome to just submit a general recommendation instead of this table format.
The student can however, enclose a general table-format along with each
recommendation, so that the admission officer reading the application can use both
the table and the general recommendation. A sample format of a general table is
provided below.
Once the recommended has approved your recommendation, please make about 10
copies, preferably on the letterhead of the institution the recommended represents.
Then ask the recommended to sign each copy in original. Once the recommendation
letters have been signed and sealed in an envelope, please ask the recommended to
sign across the flap of the envelope, thus sealing them and ensuring confidentially.
