ICSI- Assignment 2

REFLECTION MEMO
The guest session with Prof. Ramya Ranganathan talks about bounded
awareness and the way most of the people are focused on one aspect of
their life or their job and simply forgets the other important things that might
change the way they look at the world.
The session started with her experience during her employment. She talked
about her journey to academia that was majorly based on an incident that
happened during one of her jobs. The corporates or the managers are more
worried about the way their books look. They do not want anyone to suggest
changes to the way of his or her working. The video that was shown in the
class regarding bounded awareness focuses on how people tends to follow
the target that they are given and in this process, they simply forget about
the other things that are happening in the surroundings. It shows that
humans have a limited sense of focus. We are only worried about what has
been assigned to us and dont care about the other things that are
happening in the same environment. The discussion regarding the story of a
person moving in a dark tunnel with a hope that they will find a light at the
end of the tunnel was very enlightening. The concept was explained
beautifully that there might be opportunities which are waiting for someone
to explore, but people tend to focus on the result or on the target they think
is real. Humans regularly fail to see and process information which is easily
available to them. The most important things are overlooked by people while
making decisions. The main reason of bounded awareness can be fully
credited to over-focusing. This concept can be applied to corporations too.
Sometimes they are slow in realizing very significant developments at the
start of making decisions which become strategically significant at the end.
Therefore, it is important that managers understand that bounded awareness
can and will happen during the decision-making process. The reason is that
changes happen slowly and thus are not recognized or considered until it is
late.

ICSI- Assignment 2

The human mind is intrinsically incapable of seeing certain things. The

extent of our imagination limits us; we do not see what is there. Due to blind
spots in our mind, we fail to see things; then we see those things that we
want to experience rather than what is there because the mind replaces
them.
