HOW DOES ONE FIX/CHECK THE DIMENSIONS OF A BUILDING USING THE AAYADI
FORMULAE?
OnecanusetheAayadiformulaetocheckwhetherthelength,breadthandheightoftheproposedbuildingareinproportion.
Accordingly,thedimensionsofthelength,breadthorheightcanbecorrected.

BREADTH:TheYoniandVyayaformulaeareusedforfixingthebreadthofthebuilding.Iftheremainderobtainedinthe

LENGTH: Aaya, Vyaya and Raksha formuale are used to fix the Length of the building/rooms. Aaya also known as
Aadhayam,meansincomeandVyayameanslossorexpenditure.Therefore,theAayashouldalwaysbegreaterthanthe
Vyaya. Using the Aayadi formulae it has been concluded that for the Aaya to be more than the Vyaya the length of
rooms/buildingshouldpreferrablybe1.5timesthebreadthoratleast1.375timesthewidth.Thisiswhywefindthatsitesare
generallynotsquarebutrectangularwithaLength1.3751.5timestheBreadth.Forexample:Siteshavedimensionsof40x

ORIENTATION:The Yoni formuladefiningthebreadthmeasurementisusefulforbuildingsthatarenotorientedtothe

The Scientific Reasoning The ancients were aware of the power of monsoon winds and other energies (physical and
metaphysical)onstructures.Scientifically,itwasseenthatifthe4facesofthebuildingswereorientedtowardsthecardinal
directions,theycouldwithstandtheimpactoftheseenergiesandalsobenefitfromthem.Infactmostreligiousbuildings,
palaces,cities,villagesandroadsofancientIndiaandmanyotherpartsoftheworldhavebeenfoundtofacethecardinal

buildingtothecardinaldirections,itwasimportantthatthedimensionsofthebuildingshouldbesuchthatitcanwithstandthe
forcesofnature.ThisiswheretheYoni(Breadth)calculationwasuseful.

HEIGHT:TheheightofthebuildingcanbefixedusingtheVaraandTithiformulae.Theheightofthefirstfloorshouldnot

WHY WAS IT NECESSARY TO FIX DIMENSIONS ACCORDING TO AAYADI IN

VASTU SHASTRA?
TheScientificExplanation:Onereasonwasthat,inthosedaystheunitsofmeasurementwerenotuniformindifferentregions.
TheunitsofmeasurementwereAngula(3/4ofaninch)andHasta(18inches)sothat1Hastaequals24Angulas.Howeverthe
value of Hasta and Angula were different in different regions. Therefore, by using the Aayadi formulae for fixing the
dimensionsofabuilding,theriskofcreatingdisproportionatespaceswaseliminated.
