Shalom from Jerusalem. I'm here @ the Shimon Peres conference.
There is an architect you should meet. His ideas are revolutionary, sustainable and make the
quality of life of citizens
much better. He is from Denmark, has won many awards, was on the cover offast company
and there is an article about
him in this issue of wired . He call's what he does "hedonistic sustainability" or "pragmatic -utopian
" but it's no bs.
know you will change Chicago and this can help citizens understand/feel the change.

just watched the video. I love this guy, and his focus on building "fun" and that sustainability does not mean sacrifice, it
can be net $positive too.
He is an architect building on Jan Gehl's work on public space, and merging it into public/private projects, so you can
ride your bike off the street, to the top of a building for instance.
think it would be great to extend an invitation to both of them to come visit.

Yes, in that we need a change to code, but we need it for BRT too. I talked to Secretary Hannick yesterday.
He's retiring
end of month, might want to work on this. Was state rep, thinks its good idea, we can get it done with Rahm's
support/push)

This came across loud and clear in our meeting with Rogoff. If one of my initiatives gets
offthe ground I am hoping we
can designate approx. $SOm/yr for the red line, bond against it, get $500m+for the rehab.

asked our team to put
together a plan that you and I can announce in Chicago that will be helpful in building stations
and also lays out a plan
for the Red Line. I think you will like what we propose. t will be in touch. Ray LaHood ------Original

Mayor,
am not familiar with him, but will read up and we will reach out. The man who is credited with changing Copenhagen
soup to nuts since 1960, and I know well, is Jan Gehl. He is the creme de la creme, but I think would consider coming to
work with us (and you) on a project, or plan for Chicago. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jan Gehl He did do some work
for Bloomberg on PIanNYC. http://www_~ehlarchitects.com/ The focus is reorienting cities with a focus on human scale.
Let me know your thoughts on what direction to go. We could invite both for a visit?

Mayor: I just had to fwd this testimony Lahood gave on the Hill today.
This is so Ray:
LaHood on the TIFIA Program:
"Just announced we are considering a loan to completely redo the Riverwalk along
the Chicago River. WeaT"'re working
with NY on a large bridge project (I deleted the comments here). We have
29 letters of interest for the TIFIA loan
program. Almost all of them are projects of national significance."
Question from Chairman Latham:
"The Riverwalk is a project of national significance?"
La Hood:
"Yeah, the Chicago River is a natural resource that can benefit thousands of
people come to Chicago" (that's what he
said)
Chairman Latham:
1

"We have a Riverwalk back home"

La Hood:
"Fine, submit a letter. WeaTM d be happy to look at it."
