Alstom Power: Wind On the Wings of Success

WIND: THE POWER FOR CHANGE

Since 1981, long before it was considered as a legitimate energy source, Ecotcnia was
a determined pioneer in the development of wind power as a reliable source of clean
power. This belief in the wind helped the Spanish wind turbine company grow from a
small local power supplier into an international manufacturer operating more than 74
wind farms and 1500 wind turbines primarily in Spain, France, Italy and Portugal.
Alstom believes in the wind as a viable source of clean power to help meet the energy
challenge. Supplying rising global energy demands, while lowering the emission of CO2
and other pollutants that harm the environment can be achieved through the increased
use of wind power.
Building on the highly recognized technology of Ecotcnia, Alstom will accelerate growth
in this expanding new market aiming to develop wind power to its full potential on a
global scale.

Alstom is fully committed to developing wind power

into an increasingly competitive source of energy.

MAKING WIND A STANDARD

Besides wind speed, geography is also an important factor in determining where a wind
farm should be erected. Whether in a mountainous area or other difficult geographical
regions, the right equipment is needed to ensure optimal energy production. Alstom offers
a wide range of products for the wind sector, providing solutions for most geographic
and weather conditions, as well as installation and maintenance services required to
ensure top performance of the wind turbines.
Solutions for land constraint
Complete wind farms
O&M services during turbine lifetime
Dynamic power control and continuity of electrical supply

Alstoms product and service offering allows

the customer to manage wind farms as
standard power plants.

INNOVATION AT THE HEART OF THE PRODUCT

With its unique drive train concept and innovative features such as electrical pitch controls,
Alstom brings a highly reliable and proven product range to the market. A product range
that continuously benefits from the feedback of our Operation & Maintenance activity.
The expertise and vision of our core team of wind experts and the synergies between our
different areas of high-technology power generation equipment allow us to consistently
offer cutting-edge technology to our wind turbine customers.

THE MODULAR
ADVANTAGE
The nacelle consists of three modules
containing the mechanical components and
the control systems, thus allowing independent
verification of their integrity and operational
status, resulting in faster and simpler on-site
testing.
This provides greater ease of transport, demands fewer requirements for assembly cranes
and offers better use of complex terrains, due to ease of installation.

ELECTRICAL PITCH CONTROL

Pitch control is used to regulate the power transmitted to the drive train by the rotor
blades. This pitch control system maintains nominal control of the rotor speed. In turn,
nominal power supply to the grid is kept constant. Furthermore it reduces extreme loads
in the structure, allows start-up in low winds, and better use of blades when dirty. Finally
its fast response optimizes dynamic behaviour of the whole turbine.

ecotcnia 1.67 MW & 2.0 MW:

The wind turbine braking system is also based on the pitch control. The existence of
separated pitch systems in the three blades, including one autonomous uninterrupted
power supply located in each blade, maximizes the safety factor of the wind turbine. In
the event of a simultaneous failure of two pitch systems, the wind turbine is still capable
of braking.

HIGHER RELIABILITY
Our 1.67 and 2.0 MW wind turbines were built on the experience of our previous generation of wind
turbines (up to 1.3 MW). They include variable rotor speed, electrical pitch control in each blade and
increased rotor size to offer higher energy production, smoother integration into the electrical grid,
higher environmental compatibility and greater cost-effectiveness.

WIND TURBINE CERTIFICATION

All Alstom wind turbines are certified according to IEC-EN standards by international
organizations recognized to issue IEC-WT01 Type Certificates. These standards requirements
include the inspection of the assembly, full-scale testing of the blades and load, as well
as performance and load measurements. The wind turbine power curve, emitted noise
and power quality are measured by independent testing laboratories and available to our
customers upon request.

The Alstom portfolio offers the appropriate choice of wind turbine to match a particular wind farm
location. ecotcnia 74 and ecotcnia 80 2.0 MW wind turbines, have been designed to meet Class II
specifications of the IEC/EN-61400-1 standard. Thus they are suitable for sites with a mean annual
wind speed of up to 8.5 m/s and an extreme gust speed with a 50-year repetition frequency of 59.5 m/s.
ecotcnia 80 1.67 MW has been designed for optimal exploitation of Class III sites, with a mean annual
wind speed of up to 7.5 m/s and an extreme gust speed with a 50-year repetition frequency of 52.5 m/s.

UNIQUE DESIGN CONCEPT

Alstom wind turbines are based on a
unique mechanical design concept.

The hub is supported directly by a casted

frame on two bearings whereas the

gearbox is fully separated from the

supporting structure. As a consequence
the deflection loads (red arrows) are
transmitted directly to the tower whereas
only torque (green arrows) is transmitted
through the shaft to the gearbox.

The gearbox is better

protected and subject to
lower loads
Fewer breakdowns
to the gearbox
Higher reliability

GRID COMPATIBILITY
The wide application of wind energy, even
in wide isolated grids, requires modern
wind turbines to fulfil Transmission System
Operators (TSO) requirements and provide
enough transient stability for overcoming
grid regulation concerns. New grid codes
have been introduced, establishing capacity
limits that control the active power output
of wind farms, as well as their reactive
power. Grid system operators nowadays
require wind turbines with a higher
potential to sustain grid transients.
In response, Alstom designs its wind
turbines to fulfil the most demanding
requirements in terms of grid connections
and carries out complete validation and
related certifications of its wind turbine
models during design stage. From
conception, its high flexibility allows easy
adaptation and reaction to different
conditions, in accordance with each
countrys grid regulations.

Our wind turbines can deliver nominal

active power in the reactive power range
from 550kVAr lagging to 550kVAr leading
for the voltage range of 10% at the
generation point.

Active/Reactive Power Control

Our MW-class wind turbines have the
capability to control the active power
output down to very low levels with a rapid
response. The reference value can be
adjusted in order to limit the output at that
particular level. Bump-less transition from
the default mode to operation with limited
output, prevents unnecessary mechanical
loads from being transferred to the
structure.
