Note: Answer all questions from Part-A. Answer any FIVE questions from Part-B.
PART A (25 Marks)
1

Define equivalent uniformly distributed Live Load and Focal length.

Explain the necessity of counter bracing in trusses.

A two hinged semicircular arch is subjected to a load of 100 kN at a section

where the radius vector makes an inclination of 30 with the level of
springings. Find the horizontal thrust.

A three span continuous beam is fixed at one end and supported by three
simple supports. The order of the stiffness matrix for the beam is
a) 1 x 1
b) 2 x 2
c) 3 x 3
d) 4 x 4

What are the characteristics of flexibility matrix?

A u.d.l. of intensity 20 kN/m and of length 6m is moving on a simply supported

girder of 10m span. Determine the max S.F. at 6m from left support.

State and prove Eddys theorem.

A pratt truss of 36m span has 6 panels of 5m height. Determine the force in the
bottom chord of 4th panel due to a u.d.l. of 25 kN/m over the entire span.

shown below.

PART B (50 Marks)

11 Two wheel loads 160 kN and 80 kN, 3m apart crosses a simply supported girder
of 8m span from left to right with 80 kN load leading. Draw max B.M.D. and max
S.F.D.

-212 The following system of wheel loads are rolling over a simply supported girder of
36m span with 80 kN load leading. Determine the absolute maximum bending
moment in the beam and EUDLL.

13 A suspension cable of span 200m, central dip 20m carries a u.d.l. of 25 kN/m
over the entire span. If the permissible tensile stress is 100 MPa, find the cross
sectional area required and length of the cable. When the cable runs over
pulleys, determine the support reactions. The anchor cables make an angle of
45 with the piers

10

14 A three hinged parabolic arch of span 20m, central rise 4m is loaded with a
u.d.l. of 20 kN/m on the left 8m length. Determine the B.M., normal thrust and
radial shear at 4m from the left end.

10

15 A two hinged semicircular arch of 30m span is loaded with 80 kN and 120 kN at
the points where the radius vectors make inclinations of 45 and 90 with the
horizontal. Determine the B.M., normal thrust and radial shear at 7.5m from the
left end.
