SECTION 04400
MARBLE
PART 1 - GENERAL
1.01

DESCRIPTION
This section covers the furnishing and installation of marble tile for cabinet tops and
ablution area seating as shown on drawings. The Contractor shall furnish all labor,
material, tools and equipment required to complete the work.

1.02

SUBMITTALS

A. Shop Drawings:
Shop drawings shall be submitted in accordance with Submittals section, showing the
details of jointing and setting.
B. Samples:
Duplicate sets of samples of marble shall be submitted to the Royal Commission for
approval. Such samples shall be included which show the full range of color and
texture.
1.03

DELIVERY, STORAGE AND HANDLING

A. Delivery and Storage:


Marble units shall be delivered to the site and stored in a manner
to prevent soiling, staining, and damage. Marble shall be stacked
on non-staining timber or platforms at least 100mm above ground.
Marble shall be protected from the weather with non-staining
waterproof membrane.
Delivery to the site shall be timed to ensure uninterrupted progress
of the work but not sufficiently ahead of construction that
deterioration could occur at the storage area.
1.04

PROJECT REQUIREMENTS:

A. Environmental Condition:
Material shall not be set when the air temperature of the material
is below 5 deg C.

PART 2 - PRODUCTS
2.01

MATERIALS

A. General:
Marble shall be within the range of extremes in color and markings
permitted by the approved samples. Terms relating to marble shall
be as defined in ASTM C119.

Modulus of Rupture: Shall be determined in accordance with


ASTM C99. Minimum value shall be 70.3 kg/sq.cm.

Marble: Shall conform to the MIA Marble Design Manual I


and shall meet soundness classification characteristics of
Group A. Marble shall be white carrara type.

3.

Abrasive Hardness:
ASTM C241.
Marble for specific
applications as designated on the drawings, shall have an
abrasive hardness of not less than 12.

Absorption: Marble for all surfaces shall have absorption of


0.75 percent or less as determined in accordance with ASTM
C97.

B. Material:
Marble units shall be minimum 20mm thick of the designs indicated on the drawings,
and as approved by the Royal Commission.
PART 3 - EXECUTION:
3.01

INSTALLATION:

A. Setting:
Marble units shall be set in a dry concrete setting bed and tamped until fully bedded to
the proper level. The units shall then be removed and back purged with wet cement
before final setting.

B. Protection:
Marble units shall not be disturbed until mortar and grout have set.
3.02

CLEANING
On completion, clean exposed marble. Remove foreign material, excess mortar, and
stains. Cleaning solution shall be of the type recommended by the marble producer.
The use of sandblasting, steel wire brushes, and acid methods of cleaning shall not be
allowed.
