Standard 4.c: Classroom-Based Assessment for ESL (TESOL/ CAEP).


Principle #8 Using Formal and Informal Assessment (INTASC)
Candidates know and use a variety of performance-based assessment tools
and techniques to inform classroom instruction. They can assess learners
content-area achievement independently from their language ability and should be
able to adapt classroom tests and tasks for ELLs at varying stages of English
language and literacy development. Candidates understand that portfolios are
important tools in the assessment of ELL learning and are familiar with and can use a
variety of rubrics to assess portfolios and their individual contents. They also use
peer- and self-assessment to encourage students to monitor their own learning.

For standard 4.c I decided to use two different rubrics I use in my


classroom to measure both language and content. These rubrics
change depending on the unit I am teaching.
The sentence frame rubric I like to use daily with my students. It
consists of statements and questions students can use when clarifying,
predicting, wondering, and summarizing. Students who need help in
the brainstorming process are the only ones who use them. These
statements and questions have helped my students build on classroom
discussions and participation. I believe this sentence frame rubric has
not only helped me differentiate for my students but provide an extra
support for them to succeed and feel confident about their work. It has
helped my students start their work independently, which has helped a
lot of my students feel proud. I also use this sentence frame rubric with
word banks for some of my ELL students who need it.
The second rubric I provided as an artifact is a self-assessment
rubric. I give this rubric to my students after we have learned and
practiced both in class and for homework, our Conventions of Standard

English common core standards. This provides students the


opportunity to be honest and let me know what they believe they have
understood, need more help in and what needs to be completely
retaught to them. It also has two comment boxes, where students write
what their glow is and what they will like to grow in.
Im currently working on making my assessments digital. My goal
is to have most of my rubrics digital too because its a better system to
keep my students assessments organized and save time. Also, it
provides an interactive way that motivates the students to participate
in these assessments and rubrics.
