My artifact for Standard 3.b: Implementing and Managing Standards-Based ESL

and Content Instruction is an official observation.
According to my assistant principals observation, I have demonstrated my
understanding in accessing the core curriculum by teaching language through academic
content and viewing language and content as a joint means for achieving ELLs academic
and language development goals. My assistant prinicpal provided warm feedback for my
lesson plan, stating that I displayed solid knowledge of the important concepts in the
discipline and explained how they related to one another. Also, he stated that the learning
activities were aligned with the instructional outcomes and followed an organized
progression suitable to groups of students.
This lesson plan was a review for a math assessment that the students took.
Students were working on targeting the standards they did not achieve. In my lesson plan,
I made sure to provide vocabulary words with visuals for my ELL students. My students
were divided into groups to target the standards that they specifically needed and, they
were provided examples on how to complete each question along with teacher support.
The ELLs in my classroom also used the support of our classroom iPads to watch videos
and play games that addressed the specific standard they needed to work on.

The cool feedback I received from my school leader was that my learning activity
was not challenging or rigorous enough for my high level students, including some of the
ELL students I had that year. Therefore, I will make sure that my lesson plans from that
day forward are challenging and rigorous enough for my higher-level ELL students.
Another cool feedback was in reference to vocabulary terms, so I now plan to include
synonyms for words in my assignments and provide opportunities for students to use
close-text reading to find the meaning of words.
