UNIT-1
1. For a single degree of freedom system with mass 10kg and stiffness 4kN/m, the forcing function
is shown in figure. Evaluate numerically its response[Jan-14]

2. A weight W is suspended from the mid span of a simply supported beam of span L, flexural
rigidity EI and mass per unit length M. if the wire by which the weight is suspended suddenly
snaps. Describe the subsequent vibration of the beam. Neglect damping. Find its deflection

3. A building frame shown in fig. is subjected to an existing force F (t) = 300cos20t. Assuming 6%
of critical damping is present, determine its steady state response and maximum dynamics stress

4. A free vibration test was conducted on an empty elevated water tank. Through a cable attached to
the tank, where a lateral force 60kN was applied, it pulled the tank horizontally by 30mm. the
cable was suddenly cut and the resulting vibration was recorded. At the end of 5 complete cycles,
the time was 2.5 second and the amplitude was 15mm. find (i) damping ratio (ii) effective weight
(iii) No of cycles required for the displacement amplitude to decrease to 5mm. if the weight of
water required to fill the tank was 400kN, what is its natural period and damping ratio with the

5. A. A vibrating system consisting of a weight of 100N and spring stiffness of 4000N/m is


viscously damped so that two consecutive amplitudes measured are 150mm and 8021mm
respectively. Determine the logarithmic decrement and the co-efficient of damping.

6. Using numerical method determine the response of a single degree of freedom system having
mass=150kg and stiffness 60N/m when subjected to a triangular pulse loading as shown in the
figure, the responses are required at an interval of 0.10s up to 0.20s. [June-15]

8. A sensitive instrument with weight 50kg is to be installed at a location where the vertical
acceleration is 0.1g at a frequency of 10Hz, the instrument is fixed on a rubber pad of stiffness
80n/N/m and damping ration of 5% (i) what acceleration is transmitted to the instrument? (ii) If
the instrument can tolerate only acceleration is 0.005g suggest a solution assuming that the same

9. A free vibrational test was conducted on a SDOF system by giving an initial displacement of
100mm by applying a horizontal force of 100kN through a cable and then cutting the cable
suddenly. After 5 complete cycles which consumed 5 sec the amplitude was found to be 40mm.
