Beowulf Table Discussion
The politics in Beowulf mainly revolve around diplomatic relations. For instance, boasting
about oneself is typical in this society, and Beowulf executes this masterfully. This boasting
really shows that Beowulf’s ego is very inflated, as are the other characters. Also, this society
heavily relies on Kinship and heirship. Because of this, many characters have committed
fratricide in hopes for inheriting a family fortune or power.
Wealtheow, Hrothgar's wife, is the head organizer of the banquet held in the Heorot. She
also upholds this society's skill for diplomacy. In the banquet, she upholds the value of
diplomacy by graciously honoring Beowulf for his feats. In the banquet, Queen Wealtheow
mainly served as the hostess by giving guests drinks and other food. She also serves as almost
a foil to Unferth, as he behaved quite poorly during the banquet. When comparing the two
personalities, Queen Wealtheow is an antithesis to Unferth.
Beowulf is hesitant in including the Danes in his quest since he wants to dedicate all the
honor and glory to his own country, He is unwilling to include foreigners in his journey since he
believes that outsiders will hurt his pride and honor if they help him kill Grendel. He wants to be
the only one to kill the monster to earn the most amount of respect and glory possible. Beowulf
tends to show his ego in this way as well, since he jumps into situations he does not have to be
in. When confronted with a situation, Beowulf does not hesitate to face the situation head on.At the banquet after Grendel was brutally weakened by Beowulf, the Danes treated all
the guests very well, Beowulf sat next to Hrothgar's sons due to the fact that he was very well
respected by the Danes by now and had earned it. Hrothgar was aware that Beowulf was well
on his way to becoming a king and treated him as such.
